WAIST LENGTH OR BUST?

by skillsgill

Joined the GOC in February and have been chronicling my journey on Facebook. My goal is to achieve WL hair by the end of the year, hopefully. I've been almost there, but not full thickness. Started officially by cutting a see through layer on Feb. 4th

Pulling a Michael Jordan/Jay-Z!!

LOL!!!

So, I just decided to come over here to say that I have a Grow Out Challenge in progress over on Hairscapades.com that will officially end at the end of January.  However, I'm going to continue it for another 6 months for those still working towards their goals and others who couldn't join the first time around, have been playing at home or discovered the site after the first GOC began.

Here are photos of my hair progress at the end of November. I tried to include pictures from the beginning, but I couldn't because the screen would not scroll down when I tried to drag pictures into the post! Sorry, but you can check out this post on my site for my progress pictures for comparison: My Current Regimen. I'm wearing Afro puffy twists right now, so that isn't really my current regimen. But, it is the basic foundation for my hair when it's loose, but I've done some minor tweaks since then (like adding protein treatments to my regimen). However, the post does have pictures of my 3 month length checks since February 2011;). I am soooo happy that I began this journey. It's opening up whole new worlds for me and I'm excited for what 2012 holds!!

I just realized that I never posted my final length check video here, so I figured, better late than never!

HAIRSCAPADES NATURAL HAIR MEET-UP

Saturday, August 27th
2 - 5 pm
The Bohemian Caverns
2001 Eleventh Street N.W.
Washington, DC 20001
T#: (202) 299-0800

Hairscapades was born out the NaturallyCurly.com sponsored Curly Nikki presents Kim Coles' GOC.  The challenge ended on July 31st, but a few of us who developed great friendships through our GOC blogs wanted to meet in person and the idea of the meet-up was born. My website/blog became the platform to organize this event, which has grown to include more than the original group of GOCers.

Now, we would like to extend an invitation to all kinky, coily, curly, transitioning, contemplating transitioning, big chopping and/or natural hair lovers to the Hairscpades Meet-Up!!

So, if you live on the East Coast and couldn't make it to the LA wrap up, come out to the DC Natural Hair Meet-Up and hang with fellow naturals, new and old, so that we can talk about products, techniques, styles and accessories.  Also, bring your unwanted, never opened, partially used products, tools and/or accessories for the Product Swap Meet!! You’ll get rid of things you don’t want in order to make room for that item you always wanted to try!! Last, but certainly not least, you’ll get to admire the rainbow array of wonderful curls, kinks and coils that will be on display!! So come out to the Hairscapades Meet-Up! You’re sure to make a curl friend ... or two or three!

****
And, If you're interested in continuing to follow my rambles and hair posts, as well as "play at home" as we continue a Grow Out Challenge through January 2012, head on over to www.hairscapades.com

Finally, I'd like to give a special thanks Naturally Curly, Kim Coles and Curly Nikki for the wonderful ride and giving me the opportunity and incentive to start my own site and Grow Out Challenge!! I would have never done it without this platform and the support of the many bloggers who I've met along the way!

Happy Growing Ladies!!

Length Check and Wash Day

I took down my 3 bun faux hawk to pre-poo. But, before I pre-pooed, I decided I wanted to take a length check picture to compare to my first one in February! I was going to do it on Sunday, but just couldn't wait. So, here it is! The first pic is from February 19th, the second is April 21st (or thereabouts) and the third is today, July 29th, 2011.

Wooh-hooh!!  Again, I think that I'm only 2 1/2 inches from waist length!! I can also really see the difference in m weight. I've been going up and down around my 120 pounds by a pound or two the last couple of weeks and haven't worked out that much. My food is okay, but could be better as I had a couple of not so good lunches this week, including pancakes today. However, I thought of those pancakes as my final indulgence. Because, come Sunday, I'll be back on the ball as I have a new challenge ahead of me and readers who will be looking to me as a source of inspiration! Hairscapades GOC, here I come;-)!!

On a slightly sobering note, my ends were feeling a little rough, rugged and raw during my pre-poo tonight. I had to cut a strand more than halfway up the length because a shed hair was knotted so tightly around it, I couldn't get it to loosen no matter how much Vatika Hair Fall Control Cream I applied or massaging and sliding I did=(. I didn't re-moisturize this week at all because my hair and ends felt really good on Wednesday night! But, I probably should have applied some moisturizer and oil before I did that updo. The thing is, I think the issue may really be related to the shampoo incident from last week. As I've mentioned a couple of times, it was rough. So, tonight, I massaged my scalp with my EO oil mix and thoroughly covered the length of my hair with the Vatika Cream while gently and lightly finger detangling. I did this in 5 sections and twisted each section. I then applied a nice amount of Vatika oil to the last 2-3 inches of each twist (I examined each section of hair a little before twisting and didn't find any apparent split ends or knots, so hoping my ends are just dry and that the Vatika oil will eliminate the rough feeling as the coconut oil will penetrate the hair shaft). Now I'm sitting here writing this post with a plastic cap and winter hat covering all. I'll sleep in this and then, tomorrow, I'll be back to my normal DevaCare No Poo for washing, HE HH for conditioning/detangling, Shea Moisture Raw Shea Deep Tx Masque for DCing (I think) and I'll will use the modified Kimmaytube leave-in before styling with either Wonder Curl Butter Than Love or ORS Twist and Lock gel.

I've yet to decide whether I'm going to do my normal TnC or medium sized twists. I probably won't decide until I'm sitting there with the leave-in in my hair, waiting for it to dry to barely damp.

So guys, how are you going to wrap up this challenge?  Anyone straightening for their length check here?  Posting comparison photos?  Hope to see some great final posts! I expect to do one more before it's all over.  Then, I'll probably stop posting here and will only maintain my hairscapades blog. Wow, we're about to close out the end of an era;-).

ALMOST THE END!!

I can't believe that it is really almost over!! Wow!! We've lost some along the way (Ashlee, Holly, Lana ... miss you guys!!) and gained others (love ya Rece!), and many of us have stuck in here from the beginning!! I am so inspired by all of you and proud to have become a part of the community that we created! I'm very excited that a few of you will be continuing your blogs here, as well as joining me for the Hairscapades GOC!!

So, in order to kick off the GOC on my blog, I suggested a DIY project for those of us with length goals. The project? A length check tee-shirt. Here is mine! It's kind of sad though and it's not finished in this pic, which I took yesterday! I needed a few more lines, but needed my SO to get home so that he could mark waist length for me. Then, I was able to determine how many additional lines were needed. Well, we did that about an hour ago and I decided to do an unofficial length check. My hair is at the line on the tee-shirt in this pic (4 inches below APL). Waist length is 2 1/2 inches from that line!!! I'm almost there guys!!! My GOC is 6 months long and, if I am able to grow and retain a 1/2 an inch a month, I'll gain 3 inches by the end of January!! I'm so excited now because I'm sure that, if I continue what I'm doing, that I will get to WL by the end of January and maybe even a little longer! I will do an "official" length check video (stretched but not straightened hair) with my new tee-shirt this weekend to close out this challenge and begin the next one.

Uggg, for some reason, the right picture won't upload, so all I can add is the before picture. If you want to see the after, you can go here to see it and a DIY video tutorial for making your own length check tee.

In other news, that WnG from my "Done!!" post a couple of days ago was dry twisted for a TnC with Qhemet Biologics Cocoa Tree Detangling Ghee the evening of day 1/Saturday. Then, I left my hair out in the released TnC on day 2/Sunday (it was ho hum, but I never left the house with it; I went to hot yoga in the morning with the twists pinned up and released them in the afternoon). From Monday through today (Thursday), I wore it in a mid-height, messy bun using a satin scrunchie and a few bobby pins. I never released or re-moisturized it the entire four days. I just tied it down at night, then smoothed the edges in the morning with some product (twice with Eco and shea and twice with ORS Twist and Lock gel), and then tied it down again to reset until I got to work.

Tonight, I decided I wanted to try another Lilith Moon inspired style I watched earlier in the week. However, this time I filmed my attempts in order to do my own video tutorial. Stretching my hair with a TnC and bunning for several days really helps elongate my hair and reduces tangles and knots so that I can create another style on the same set. My hair was feeling so good coming out of the bun. I didn't expect that as it's been up all week and I wasn't really impressed with the Qhemet Detangling Ghee when I initially used it for the dry TnC. However, despite not being re-moisturized all week, my hair (including my ends) was soft, supple and shiny!! Hmmm, maybe I was wrong about this product! I'll definitely have a more thorough review on it shortly. Anwyho, here are pictures of the faux hawk style inspired by Lilith Moon (my video tutorial to follow next week). Hope you like!
