I am a young woman, who has been natural for almost 4yrs, but natural within for all my life. My blogs will be about how I fought my way into believing and accepting that God did indeed make me a beautiful being.

"NAPPY ROOTS GON' BE OKAY!"

And then it hit me. As I ran my fingers through my hair, from root to tip, it suddenly hit me that I was natural. For years, I cringed at the feeling of puffed roots against my hands. I was quick to run to the store to buy that no-lye, JUST because of that feeling. That feeling that made me feel so unpretty, so unlady like, so ungroomed. That feeling that would make me scorch my scalp in an attempt to straighten those oh so once dreadful to me…nappy roots. That feeling that caused my peers to laugh at me, caused me to tie my scarf tight around my head, creating tattoos of lines against my forehead that were a reminder of the very thing that I was trying to forget…my nappy roots.

That same feeling is the feeling that I now embrace. That feeling of my curls and naps against my fingertips makes me beam with joy. That cotton-like feeling of pureness, natural, unadulterated, uninhibited, and unrestrained from society’s acceptance of what my hair should look like… as a woman of color, as a black woman, and a WOMAN...period.

Isn’t it funny how times have changed?? Those same people who laughed at the naps and called us beady-beads are the same ones running to BC??

I love my hair. But I realize that it’s just hair. My hair doesn't make me more or less of the beautiful woman that I am today. If I decided, at this very moment, to get a perm, how would you view me?? Would you start laughing at me the way that the others laughed at me when I DIDN'T get a perm??
Or would you criticize me for MY decision?? Will the cycle of us women using our hair to define ourselves ever end?? Ponder that…

What I’m saying is, whether you’re weave’d up, fro’d out, permed-out, lace-fronted out, or whatever your choice of style is…It doesn't make you the woman that you are. Your character does…your personality does…the way you make people feel does. Don’t let anyone tell you any different.

BUT, as I run my fingers through my hair, from root to tip, I realize that I will never get tired of this feeling…this feeling I love, I can’t deny. My fingertips love those nappy roots!

"Protect that Fro!!"

Good evening Beauties!! The weather is so burrrr! Yea, I think that one word describes it all. Lol. My hair has been showing the effects of the cold, too. So, I have increased my amount of water/water based moisturizer for my day and night regime. I also keep my small spray bottle filled with water, a lil bit of conditioner, and dashes of castor oil in handy too. I spritz this mixture on my hair before I step outside, and after I have sealed and moisturized my fro.

I tried bantu knots this week, and they were gorgeous. It was very timely, though. I started off with medium 2-stranded twists. Then, I put the twists into bantu knots. Ladies, if you don’t know what I am talking about, please go to YouTube and search this process. That’s where I learned, and I promise you they can show you better than I can tell you ;-)

Also, my last post talked about how I trimmed my hair. Well…it has already started to grow back!! I cut about 2 inches off, and I am a bit surprised on how fast it is growing. Before trimming, you should wash and blow dry your hair straight. You will achieve a cleaner cut that way.

Finals week is approaching, so I am looking for a protective style to adopt. Ladies, I really don’t want to go back to the braids! (I won’t!) Any other suggestions on what I can do with my hair??

"First Updo & a Wash Day"

Well, I know I promised that I would probably post pics of my first updo, but it didn’t turn out how I wanted it to. By day 2, my hair was already frizzy and puffy. Ugh, well you know what they say…”If at first you don’t succeed, dust yourself off and try again!” So that is what I will be doing. For now, I have allowed the flat twists to remain. Yesterday, I untwisted the middle portion, and was left with a curly, half Mohawk. It looked okay, but definitely NOT the way I intended for it to look like.

I will be untwisting my entire head, and will wear it as a twistout. If that turns out nice, I will post a pic. Tomorrow is my wash day…

Wash day routine

1) Pree-poo hair with coconut oil, about an hour, covering hair with a shower cap.
2) Cleanse hair with black soap. Do not wash twice.
3) Apply hair mayonnaise on hair (added a few drops of rosemary oil, peppermint oil, and castor oil to the conditioner)
4)Allow to sit for about an hour and a half, with plastic shower cap on.
5) Rinse with cold water.
6) Apply leave in, seal, and style.

"Winter Time Hair"

Hola Lola’s!! lol. Well, we all know that Winter is right around the corner. So, it’s time for us to start adopting those protective styles! The dry, harsh, and cold Winter air causes damage to our hair. Therefore, maintenance is a MUST!! (See my previous post to read my definition of maintenance.)

Weeeellll, my go-to protective style is flat twists, and now that I have a week free of tests (YAAAAAAAAAY!!), I will be trying a flat twist/2-stranded-twist updo! I am so excited! I may just post pics! Also a part of my maintenance plan, I will be trimming my hair this week. It’s long overdue. Note: When trimming hair, make sure you use SHARP shears intended only for the hair. Awhile back ago; I made the mistake of using regular scissors to trim my hair. Ugh! I ended up with more split ends than I started with!

I will be back later on in the week with results of my first updo and possible pics. I hope you guys check me out!!

Ladies, I am curious. What are some of your favorite protective styles that you plan on rocking this Winter??

"When in Doubt, Bonnet it Out!"

Hi guys!! So, for the past two weeks, school has been kickin’ my butt!! I mean I have had at LEAST two tests every week. Not to mention online work in almost all my classes! But ladies, we all know that when we get busy like this, our hair tends to suffer and receive the minimal amount of attention…NO GOOD!! So...I have been rocking a bonnet for these past hectic weeks. I promised myself that even though I didn't have the time to style and primp my hair when I wanted to, I would ALWAYS take care of it.

 1) I chose a protective style that I knew I could keep in for up to a week. My style of choice was flat twists. I don’t like the way they look without the bonnet, though…lol. I deep conditioned my hair, applied a good leave in, added moisture butter, and sealed with castor oil. I then proceeded to flat twist my wet hair, and allowed it to air dry.

 2) At night, I wore a satin scarf to protect my hair. I used this same scarf to protect the back and top of my hair from the harshness of the bonnet. I left the front area of my hair out, and pinned the bonnet to the scarf so that it wouldn't fall off my head.

3) Every day, I spritzed my hair with water and sealed it with an oil of my choice. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!

 4) At the end of the week, I repeated steps one and two, and prepped my hair for week two.

So when time is limited...

DO take care of your hair. You will be very upset with yourself when you wake up to a hair full of tangles and mattes.

DO pick a protective style that you like, stick with it, but also do hair MAINTENANCE! A little spritz in the morning is all you need. And if that’s too tedious for you, just add oil to your spray bottle full of water.

DO NOT neglect your hair!

Be YOU!! It comes soooo naturally!! ;-)
