In Search of Excellent Hair
by Lisa-Lisa
What's up, everybody! My last relaxer was in February of 2010. I decided to start wearing it curly in March 2012. And since then, it has been a wild ride! I'm in search of the best curly look for myself. Will I find it, or will I have to flat iron? Yikes!

Now that I'm really making an effort to wear my hair with its natural curls, I'm noticing that I have to keep a sense of humor. I am someone who is a FREAK about my hair. All of my close friends and family know this. However, while I'm on this journey, there are days when I look like I just don't give a hoot! Although I may have spent two hours trying to twist my hair the night before, and one solid hour the next morning trying to style my hair, I can still look, well, unkempt. I'm the kind of person who feels like if I'm having a good hair day, then it's a good day. If I'm having a bad hair day, then all hell is about to break loose. :-) Seriously. I really feel that way. My sweet, fabulous niece graduated from college recently. I traveled to the Gulf Coast to her her graduation. Her post graduation celebration was held at a park. I was outside. In the very humid elements. My hair was "on one" for real. I don't know what to do about my situation. I've purchased several products. Some of them work for me. Most of them don't. And in my profession, I need to look classy every day. It's hard to look pulled together when your hair is imitating a bird's nest. Enjoy these pictures. On each one, my hair looks very different. They were all taken within a 10-day period. No hair cut. I thnk the only difference is a change in the climate. ![]() ![]() |
Twist Out Frenzy

Hello World! I am African-American woman who does NOT know how to style the hair that God gave me! Now that that's out there, let the judgement begin. After two years of transitioning and wearing my hair blown out and flat ironed (the only style I'm truly comfortable with right now) I got a wild idea to wear my hair curly. I started trying styles on my own, but it was a disaster! I realized I needed professional help, so I went to a natural salon that specializes in kinky styles. My trip to the new salon was a draining 4 hour marathon! (At my other natural salon that specializes in straight styles, I'm in and out in 2 hours MAX.) So I was already a very un-happy camper. But, my style was fabulous! Everywhere I went, I got compliments on my big, beautiful hair! I loved it! All was well, until it was time to wash... What a nightmare. Remember, I don't know jack about wearing my hair any kind of way other than straight. After conditioning and sitting under the hooded dryer, I was like, "Now What?" I tried to flat twist my hair with two-strand twists. I used the products I purchased from the new salon, and I got back under the hooded dryer. I couldn't get my hair as tight as the new stylist, but I was proud of myself for trying. After about 30 minutes of drying, I took my hair down. What a disappoinment! Apparently, flat twists only look nice when you can get the twists to be FLAT during the setting phase. When I twisted my hair it was all puffed up because I don't know how to flat twist. At all. Truly. Long story long, I had to go back to the new salon. This time, I watched the stylist like a hawk. I purchased yet another product, and I've been on my own since then. Free to experience the highs and lows of getting used to the hair God gave me. :-) Take the ride with me. Hopefully, we'll have a few laughs along the way. |
