How I Grew My Hairline “Baby Hairs” Back
SORRY. NONE OF MY PHOTOS WILL LOAD ON THIS SITE. SO, I WASN'T ABLE TO INCLUDE THEM.
Just to reiterate, I was born with a head full of straight, shiny hair. After my hair went curly it remained soft, fine and grew very long and full. My mother introduced my hair to a mild relaxer at the age of 4. Thereafter, I didn’t see my natural texture until age 15 after months of wearing my first weave (they’d recently become available on the retail market). At age 13 my long, full hair began thinning and shortening, so it was suggested I get a weave. All of my hair had grown back by the time I removed the weave completely at age 17 but I put it back in until I got it relaxed again.

For those of us who are multi-racial, mixed, or mulatto, a gradual change in hair texture and/or color is the norm. Some of us start out with straight hair that turns curly, frizzy or kinky. Others start out with curly hair that turns kinky or even nappy. What remains may show up as some softer textures around the hairline, a patch of the original texture somewhere on your head, random wavy or straight hairs throughout (that’s me) or entire clumps of straight or wavy hair with the rest being frizzy or kinky. What is important to remember is that chemicals can alter and damage the hair and scalp.
I’ve been natural since 2006. But I continued to wear wigs since my scalp was no longer able to tolerate chemicals beyond hair dyes due to the damage hair stylists caused. I always believed that since my hair had always been so resilient, I’d one day get my length and fullness back. What I didn’t expect was that I could get any type of fullness or new growth around my hairline.
I stumbled upon NaturallyCurly.com late in 2011. That’s when I decided to try co-washing and leaving conditioner in my hair daily. Throughout high school I’d was around lots of Hispanic girls. Therefore, I heard a lot about conditioning. I put it to the test after reading excerpts of “Curly Like Me”. Prior to co-washing I rarely saw more than a ½ inch of straight, shiny hairline growth.
I have new hairs that I’ve never seen since I was a baby. They’re visible around the front of my hairline and my sideburns and hair behind my ears are growing longer. When I chemically straightened, the relaxer would cause these hairs to become crunchy and would eventually just fall out. Even with a base applied the chemicals were just too strong. So the base couldn’t prevent damage to the follicles.

I mainly wear my hair in one or parted from ear to ear (horizontally) with a curly ponytail on top and a curly puff in the back. Each morning I do the following:
