this is the best gel I've ever used it only makes my hair hard if i dont use a leave in conditioner
Hated this gel. The smell sucks in my opinion, smells like house cleaner. Also, it is wear more drying than the argan and olive oil. Left a lot of flakes in my hair and it was just too thick.
I'm not much of a product junkie and like my routine to be simple, fast, and cheap. I'm really glad I finally tried this gel. Surprisingly the protein hasn't done anything negative to my hair. It defines my hair and seals my conditioner on my low porosity hair. Doing wash and gos has really saved me a lot of time versus twisting. I'm too afraid to use the ones with oil because oils make my hair super knotted and dry. I haven't tried too many different products, but after trying this I don't feel a need to lol
I really hated this gel. I've heard good things about it so I thought I'd give it a try. It didn't add any curl definition at all and made my hair feel really dry. I had to wash and restyle my hair the next day because my scalp started itching the frizz was so bad, I couldn't go out in public. I even used it with a leave-in and Curl Keeper. Worst gel ever. No wonder you get the amount for the price. Definitely will not purchase again.
I am only giving this two stars because my hair was breaking off badly, I mean in clumps and I really thought something was wrong with me. I tried drinking more water, working out, anything at all... THEN, I stopped using this product and my hair stopped falling out. I mean, this was going on for a long time before I figured out what the culprit was. What confirmed my suspicion is that my mom told me that this gel was making her hair fall out and I immediately was like, ME TOO!!! I used the olive oil and the argan oil ECO gels interchangeably and they were both horrible on my hair, making it dry and stiff and BRITTLE. On the upside, my curls were defined and lasted for a few days and the price was much cheaper than Kinky Curly, but you definitely get what you pay for.
I have healthy, low porosity, fine, thin 2b/2c hair. I keep a hair journal. I tried the gel on its own, over a leave-in conditioner, over a leave-in conditioner, Shea Moisture Curl & Style Milk, and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie. I also combined this gel with various different Shea Moisture Products. But I had no success. With just the gel, my hair looked long, and stretched out. My curls became almost straight. I think my hair does not like the protein in this product. My hair felt soft. I tried this on a day when it was 99 degrees, 80% humidity and a dew point of 70 degrees. My hair did not look frizzy. It had a nice shine. When I added other products my hair was more weighed down. Soft yes. But my curls and waves were reduced to two large barrel waves. I returned this product after trying 12 different combinations. The protein just stretched the curls and waves out of my hair.
This is the greatest gel ever created. Period. It creates beautiful separation and frizz free curls. I just did a wash and go with my 3a/b hair and I have never had better results with any other gel. Plus, $5.50 at Sally's? Hello, you can't beat that price! A little goes a long way, trust me. It's like glue haha. Oh, and I used the olive oil kind with the DevaCurl One Condition as my leave in. Very little crunch, and if there is a little, just scrunch it right out.
This is the BEST gel I have ever used.... Ever!!! It doesn't make my hair all crunchy and hard. It actually makes my hair soft and defines my curls well. It's also good for when I need to slick my hair back in a bun, and tames my flyaways. This will be the only gel I ever use for now on!
I had a love/hate relationship with this product for about 2 years (Both this one and the Olive Oil one). I FINALLY found a way to get the perfect wash and go and NOT have that crunch the next morning. I moisturize my hair with the African Pride Olive Miracle Growth oil and define with the Gel. THAT'S IT!! The next day there is little to NO crunch. I was surprised that all i need to do was pair this product with an oil. I am back in love with this product!
Hey, i've been using Eco Styler Gel both Crystal Clear and Pink Eco Styler Gel....they both work great on my hair! I tried the Brown Protein Eco Styler Gel but it was too heavy....worked just as good though! So far.... I'm staying with the Crystal clear and The Pink Eco Styler Gel! Just use Tresemee Naturals under it to condition hair :-)
Really great definition. But, that isn't even what I was interested in...it is heavy on my hair, but this is just what I needed. My hair is super thick and doesn't hang, but with this in, there is much nicer hang. The only negative is that after a few hours, as I'm sure most gels, its really hard. Either way, people (although its annoying) keep wanting to touch my hair.
I really must say that This gel works very well. It's definitely a keeper! I love the price as well!
I used the olive oil kind after seeing nothing but great reviews. I was very disappointed in it. This is the worst gel I have ever put in my hair! I would give this product zero curls if I could! I put it on over my leave in and it made my hair so dry and nasty looking.. It literally sucked all of the moisture out of my hair. After applying I could see little flakes all over my hair. It was a complete mess! Made my hair dry fast, but it left the area in middle of my hair wet and slimy, which took all day to dry. By the end of the night my hair was stiff, dry as straw, huge, frizzy, tangled, and left my hair looking like an Afro. This left so much build up and reside. It took weeks of shampooing and conditioning before my hair recovered from all the tangles and dryness this stuff left behind. I took it back to Sally's the next day. Would never use again!
This review is actually for the argan oil one but I do not see it listed and the ingredients are virtually the same for both products so I'm commenting here instead. Although my results were less than stellar, I do not want to give this product a negative review because it is good quality. Nice clean ingredients, very inexpensive, light smell that doesn't linger, and it doesn't flake at all. It also has a good hold (not too much) and gives me nice tight curls with good bounce. However, it dries my hair out so bad. The first time it happened I was surprised so I tested it again to see if it was a fluke. Same thing. If I leave this gel in my hair for anything over 24 hours it gets so dry and tangly. At first I suspected glycerine was the culprit but then I tried someone's suggestion of putting it in sopping wet hair (so the glycerine would have enough water to feed its humectant properties) and see if the gel dried my hair out still. Well, it did it again, so I've come to the conclusion that it's the wheat protein. I'm very sad. I really loved this product (especially its price) and the fact that it's cruelty free. That's a rarity at the drugstore. If you're not protein or glycerine sensitive, however, this is a great choice.
Defines my curls great! I just get this straw like feeling when i don't leave it in twists to dry. It's good though. I mix it in with olive oil or fantasia ic Hair polisher for shine as well as Organix Curls Unleashed. I'm happy i don't listen to my mom and i play with my hair. GO INDEPENDENCE!
I love this gel!!!! It defines my 3c/4a curls and waves perfectly. It may take some doing to get your perfect amount as with any product. I'm not sure what it will do for fine hair or straighter pattern (2's or 4c's) but for tighter heartier curls it works pretty well. You'll need a leave in under this. I use Long Aid activator underneath mine. I like the combo because the LA is super moisturizing, and there is no chance of white balls because they are both clear. This gel is super cheap, so I'd try it. You may like it! (Took me over a year to break down and buy it!!)
I decided to try this when I went to Sally's since I've heard tons and tons of great reviews about EcoStyler. However, the only pro i would give for this product is that it's alcohol free. Otherwise, I've seen other gels for better prices, better hold, an smells. I didn't like the consistency because I felt that it made my hair slimier than other gels I use (maybe due to the lack of alcohol? Idk). Anyway, I probably won't be buying this again.
i think this gel would've been pretty good except it made my hair look kinda dry :( idk if its because of the protein in it or what. I'm still trying 2 fig out if im protein sensitive or not. But other than that it smells good, its thick so u don't need a whole lot & its in a giant tub which will prob last forever so if u are not protein sensitve i say go 4 it!!
I really, really wanted to live this gel! After reading the reviews and seeing the great price, I decided to try it. It just doesn't have enough hold even for my fine 2b hair, even layered under LALSG. Maybe it's due to the high dew points I deal with year round. I tried using more, but it left my hair feeling icky.
I absolutely loveeee this gel. After reading all the reviews on it I had to try it! I had nothing to lose considering how cheap it was. I have 2c/3a, medium thickness, dry frizzy hair. I have tried soooooo many products including KCCC, Jane Solution, Deva Curl, AG, and many others and this so far has been my favorite. I recently started doing the CG method and this gel is awesome! It washes out very well with my CO wash. It goes on a little sticky/stiff but it dries into beautifully defined curls. it took me a couple tries to figure out how much of this gel i need to use on my hair (a few nickel sized globs if my hair is sectioned into three) I would highly recommend this gel. It defines my curls, but it may not have the hold that many people are looking for with a gel. I use LA Looks Sport gel (The blue one) in conjunction with Eco Styler for a perfect combo for bouncy, spirally, soft curls.
i absolutely love the eco styler gel it defines my curls and enhances my curl pattern and reduces frizz. i gave it a 4 because i dont like the way it makes my hair feel hard but overall it is brilliant! :)
This product is GREAT! It is like no other GEL I've tried. I love it because it's alcohol free and when I mix it with SheaMoisture Curl Enhancer it's even better! It holds my curls and it lasts me up to 3 days, without any nasty residue. I definately recommend!!
No matter what I try I always come back to this gel. It has great hold, you can SOTC easily, and I can get 3rd and 4th day hair consistently with it. Sometimes I mix with a little coconut oil and it becomes out of this world.
This is my new HG. I am trying to trim my beauty budget (my other HG is Aveda's Confixor, which is $18 a bottle). You can get a giant tub of this for less than $5 from Sally's. The first time I used it, I hated it and thought it was a frizzy mess but I realized I had to use MORE of the product on very, very wet hair. I squeeze excess water out of my hair (don't towel dry) and add my leave-in, then I section it and liberally apply gel to each section. It would seem I'm applying too much product, but that's the right amount. The hair dries soft, curly, and frizz-free and holds throughout the day with no crunch. Magnificent!
The best!! I have between 4a and 4b hair and recently I had a bad breakage and had to start over, since it has been a mini fro, it is so curly and shiny, when I want my curls defined I use it, the best invention and a great price
I bought a tub of the Olive Oil styling gel and tried the same trick I used on the Kinky Curly: i added about half a bottle of the Proclaim 7 Oil with Olive Oil prime. Shook together in a pump bottle. I use it that way because I know a plain gel will give me cereal bowl hair, but mixed with the oil it gives me better definition, less frizz and DEF less crunch.. I think that after my hair has finally gotten used to BC (just did it 12/31/11) it will probably settle down to being ringlety like it was before. Right now as long as it keeps my MiniAfro in place and moisturized, I'm good.
I found this gel years ago after I found out I'm allergic to most perservatives and bought it solely based on ingredients. I used the pink gel first (medium hold) since that was what i found, then clear, argan oil and finally back to clear. I have to say, I like the clear the best. It is inexpensive (necessary for me since I'm in grad school) and lasts a while. My complaints are that it takes a LONG time to dry (I suppose that is true with all gels) and it seems to lose its hold as my hair dries. I know it isn't just me - I introduced this product to a friend of mine and she had the same complaint. I end up needing to apply gel two or three times as my hair dries and I use a LOT of gel, so I'm not sure why that is the case. Big pro is that, unlike some reviewers, I have no problem with itching or flakes and I wash my hair every 4 days or so. Between washes I squeeze in some water and re apply the gel, but don't have issues with build up. That was one reason my friend started using it too, and she said her itchy scalp has gotten a lot better since switching to this product.
Best invention since sliced bread. This gel can be used in place of a cream based product when doing twist outs and braid outs. It is also good for wash and gos and really defining curls. It moisturizes hair while setting it in place. Its competitive advantage is that it does not make your hair hard, brittle or crunchy. However, I do not recommend this gel for holding down edges.
I love this product. As a struggling college student I will not be trying the more expensive products to compare this to for a while but I use this all of the time and my twist outs/bantu knot outs turn out great! Usually 3/4/5 day hair If I redo my frizzy spots(I play w/ my hair too much) at night. I use a conditioner first then the gel. It does turn a little white at first but dries clear. Add a little oil as I take down my twists and ready to go!
This works great in my hair! I put some leave in conditioner in my hair then apply this to my hair in sections then diffuse & I'm out the door. I'm left with a full head of light, soft, amazing curls and it doesnt shrink my hair much. It doesnt really keep the frizzies away as much as I'd hoped for on 2nd day hair though.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this stuff... Best gel ever for curly girls! I waited way too long to purchase this... And it's cheap!

I've only used this for a week, but I love it. It defines my curls and gives them shine. I actually use the olive oil version. I also have the argan oil version, but haven't tried it yet. Now I see what all the hype was about :-).
I use the Argan Oil Eco styler gel. I mix it with another product and my curls last for three or more days with no crunch or flakes.
H.G. for me in normal dew points. It is a magic clump maker. It just seems to pull your hair together into clumps. It has good hold. For me it is a curl enhancer and gel all in one. Super cheap for a tub the size of my head. My only complaint is that the glycerin in it dries my hair out in the winter. I love this stuff.
This is one my holy grail products! It's cheap, can be found almost anywhere, and it works SO well. Where most gels break up my clumps and give me stringlets, this holds them together and really enhances my waves. The crunch scrunches out pretty well (sometimes I do need the aid of some coconut oil or a light leave in to soften it), and the hold is great.
Excellent for twist outs and coil sets. But if you want a softer look, I'd advise to use an oil, coconut or jojoba, on your hair first.
I love this gel!!! I have fine hair and I thought it would weigh my hair down but it didn't. I used a lot of it and used a tshirt to scrunch out some moisture/excess gel. And when it dried, it was barely crunchy and I had awesome clumps. I get 2 day hair out of this gel, no question.
i tried the olive oil version of this gel and i hate it. its too..thick, weighs my hair down wayyy too much, and my hair frizzes after just a few hours. wont be buying that one again. i might try this one, if its not as thick.
I love this gel. I remember one day being in my grandparent bathroom and I found it under their cabinet. I tried it in my hair and I had no freeze for the rest of the day. It held my curls nicely. I need to go pick some up right now.
I really love this gel. I don't get a crunchy feel in my hair. Also, it gives me just enough sleekness that I don't feel greasy. My transitioning curls are in love. As soon as I finish the container, I'll try the olive oil version.
I use the olive oil version of this gel and I love it. Out of all the products I've tried since my BC, this is the ONLY one that does not leave my hair frizzy, that gives me enough curl definition & hold to get 2nd day hair & keeps my hair pretty moisturized. And although my hair is still too short for it to matter, there is hardly any shrinkage when it dries. I have yet to try KCCC, so I don't know how it compares, but the price is a HUGE plus. My only complaint is that I can't use it with a leave-in, because then it turns white and flaky and it doesn't seem to matter what leave-in or how much leave-in I use. But overall, I love it!
The best thing about this is the smell. on it's own it has good hold but i got the "crunch" effect and when I added water, there was little hold :(
I thought this would best a really good product , but I was slightly disappointed. It didn't really weigh down my curls (well I have no curls to weigh down!) I like that it did not make my hair dry, and it lasts a long time for me. I just add water and thats it!
I have used the eco-styler by itself. I have used it with a leave-in conditioner. It does define it for a day. The next day the hair does not look the same. I have used KCCC, that is the best. It has a long last effect. It will last 7 days before having to wash it again. I will stay with my KCCC. No comparison.
First of all, in no way shape or form does this product compare to KCCC at all! It has a "product-y" feel to it, yet it dries soft, but it does tend to frizz and will not promote 2nd/3rd day hair. I have 3c curls, and this product is a bit heavy, but did not dry in that heavy consistency it was applied with. I would not refer to this product as a staple product and never compare it to the KCCC.
I found this product very drying to my hair and I had a lot of shrinkage. I've seen others compare it to KCCC but, for me, there was no comparison at all; the two products aren't even in the same universe.
Good for a gel. I am not a gel lover or at least my hair isn't. But this performs better than others I have tried. It does not leave a hard crunch and does not flake. It is easy to rinse from hair though I would suggest washing after use. Others have compared it to KCCC and I would have to disagree in that it will provide the same definition and hold however your hair is a bit crunchier and one application does not have the same day after day lasing effects as KCCC. Also I had to apply more of this product than I would if using KCCC. It does a good job of taming edges and on braid outs. However when I use on braid/twist-outs I will also apply an oil to my hair in the morning for added softness. But for the price it is a good rival for KCCC.
I bought this at Sally's (4.99) because the reviews were great and I decided to try it because the price is right. By the time my hair dried, it was big fuzzy poof ball. My hair does not like hydrolyzed wheat protein! I'm glad that some have had great success, but it just didn't work for my 3B hair.
I really wanted to like this because it gave me awesome, tight, voluminous curls. But the smell was strong, unpleasant and it made my allergies worse. Then I when I rinsed it off, it didn't seem to rinse clean so I had to wash it twice, once to get the product out and once to get the smell out. Guess I'll stick to KCCC.
this product is wonderful! the price is good and its a good replacement to kccc. it really define the curls and holds in moisture. great prosduct!
I just recently bought a (huge) tub of this on sale at Sally's. After reading reviews about it, I kept thinking 'it's just gel...is it really that great?', but now that I've used it, I know it REALLY IS THAT GREAT! It doesn't leave any white residue like other gels do & it leaves hair soft, not super crunchy! I scrunch this in my daughter's 2b hair every morning & it holds well throughout her schoolday. =)
OK, so who doesn't love their EcoStyler gel? I tried it on natural hair for the first time last Autumn. It provides a really nice, lasting hold, as well as lots of shine. I use it to slick up my ponytails and lay down my baby hair. Sometimes I'll saturate my damp hair with it for a quick wash 'n go, but you REALLY have to watch how much you use though...too much and you will have a whitish-gray mess! It dries pretty clear though. Sometimes a little crunchy though. I recommend this product for ponytails, braids, and stuff like that, but if you have VERY THICK, SPONGY, 3C/4A hair like mine, I wouldn't recommend it for loose 'dos.
Eco is an old standby. I use it to slick my sides and create waves. I think it's about the same as any other medium hold clear gel I have tried. Personally, I would not use it in place of KCCC for a couple of reasons. (1) The ingredients aren't as great. (2) I find that it leaves my hair a little crunchy. It's a good gel, but nothing to phone home about.
I like this gel a lot. It provides a firm hold similar to IC Fantasia, but without the crunch. The gel is also very thick. It provides very good curl definition and I love how big the tub/container is. I get big, defined curls using this but for less volume I use a dime sized amount of KCCC layered on top.
I love this product on my 4b/c curly/coily hair. I gives it shine and volume and holds curls. I damp my hair a little and put it in until I see my curls pattern come in. It does get a little white but goes away. And it does not flake. I would recommend it. It will not elongate curls if that is what you are looking for, but it does give volume.

I was amazed at how much frizz control I got with this! Almost as good as the frizz control I get with Rockin' Ringlets! I got 32 ounces for $2.99 on sale at Sally's...it was WELL worth the money. This is a keeper. I did need to use a stronger gel with it...it doesn't have "hard hold," but it does define curls without crunch. And it has UV protection. I haven't tried KCCC so I can't compare, but I really do love this!
I switched to this a couple of mths ago because KCCC was no where to be found & getting to be a very expensive habit. This is even better. My hair stays moist & it has defined curls. So economical! They have the 80 oz for $9! I'm sure that would last some folks 1 yr. Big difference from KCCC.
