Since going CG, I've been using HETT. After a while, and some digging I decided to give SMU a go. Unfortunately, this gel made my hair sticky, left my curls undefined, created a bit of a build up problem, and just gave me grief! When I first started having issues, I blamed it on the fact I was adding olive oil to tame frizz, add shine, and cut the crunch. I noticed white flakes and my curls were frizzy and tacky to the touch. After that, I stopped using the olive oil and washed several times with regular shampoo. After washing nearly every day for a week I noticed my hair was not getting any better, if anything, worse from all of the shampooing. Finally it clicked that maybe it was the gel, not the oil, causing the problem. So I did one final shampoo, loaded my hair with conditioner, and used HETT afterwards. Since then, my hair has gotten so much better and feels so much healthier. I don't think I'll be returning to SMU. Edit: I thought I should add a comparison of the HETT and SMU. Using SMU, I noticed the gel was incredibly tacky and became white and gloopy if I spread it between my palms. When I put it in my hair, nothing much happened. With HETT, the gel was much less sticky and did not turn white as I spread it between my palms. Also, when I added it to my hair, I could see it curl up and become more defined. This is really good for my second day hair because it adds a bit of definition to my dried hair. I never got this result with SMU.
This was the first gel I tried after starting cg, and it's awesome. It helps my curls clump, combines well with other products, is perfect for smoothing over and scrunching second day hair, and has a light refreshing smell. It dries with a nice reassuring crunch which is then easy to scrunch out. I can always find it on sale, and if I'm travelling light, I can use it alone to style.
I used this on mine and my daughters 3b fine curls. It works awesome. My daughter gets some frizz but she is also 7. I find I get nice, defined, shiny curls. I get good hold for the whole day for the most part. There is no crunch and my hair is very soft. I cannot get second day hair using this gel.
I tried this gel only once, because it was on sale. It was okay .. my hair was somewhat defined, somewhat shiny and bouncy, hold was minimal though. I would not purchase again, but may work better for someone else with different type hair, maybe someone who needs a lighter hold, it would be worth trying! It was very light, and ingredients are pretty good, no silicones. My hair has certainly been worse with other products, so I would use this in a pinch if my regular gel wasn't available.
This stuff is just okay. Did not help much with humidity and frizz but it also was not hard or stiff for me which i hate untouchable hair!! Probably better for wavy hair types needing a softer hold. I used it over kinky curly knot today leave in. Will not return it to the store but will keep searching for better product!
Okay, I remember before going super crazy about CG and all of that, I used to use this gel one summer about a year or so back. It gave me amazing curls, very shiny and moisturized curls, and I believe this gel is great for the warmer/humid months. I remember my curls looking extremely beautiful when I used it, but it's been a while so I'll have to pick it up again soon. Very cheap and smells good too!
I keep going back to this gel. Its really great in the humid months. It leaves my hair frizz-free, shiny and well defined. It plays well with other products. There is no need to reapply between washes, it reactivates with water.
This gel works well with my hair, gets rid of a lot of frizz which is a plus but not all. I have 2c/3a curls and it seems to hold well, just not in the back (maybe I need more gel in the back) also I find this fell really sticky, but does not leave a crunchy feeling when I take my hair our of it's plop when I wake up all, I will probably not buy this product again because I want to try the la looks sport gel
Pretty good gel. I used it with the Kinky Curly Knot Today Leave-in and it left my curls looking nice. I wouldn't purchase this again though because I see the same results when I use my cheaper gel (LA Looks Sports gel). So I just rather purchase the LA Looks gel over this Herbal Essences gel, saves me money.
I did not have a very good experience with this product. It left my curls frizzy and with breakage. It also leaves a dry, flaky residue that sometimes takes a couple of shampoos to get out. If you are a condition only type then you will definitely have a difficult time with this product. I had to use Paul Mitchell clarifying shampoo, because my Pantene medium/thick would not get it out. I would only recommend trying this product if it’s on sale since there are exceptions and you might fair better with its use then I did. I will not be purchasing this product again!
I really dislike this product. I 've tried it 4 or 5 times, and all it did was leave my hair stringy. definitely wont buy this again.
I LOVE this gel! It's got a very strong hold that keeps my curl pattern in place. It also scrunches out very easily and leaves my hair soft and super shiny. It smells nice and has a nice thick consistency. Readily available at most drug/grocery stores. This is my go-to gel, I've never had a bad experience with it.
Not my favorite. Gives better curl formation and hold than HETT, but it left my hair slightly sticky and didn't give me the best curls. In my experience L.A. Looks Sport Gel trumps this gel in all aspects including price. If you prefer a looser hold and/or want to stick with this brand, I'd recommend trying HETT. This gel is also difficult to find in stores lately, I had to buy it online.
