I use this gel with the Totally Twisted mousse for my styling and it works pretty well. It can cause a bit of flaking and it's definitely not going to do anything for you on its own, but for me it works wonderfully for taming some flyaways and I use it on my baby hairs for my updos all the time! And like all Herbal Essences products it smells lovely.
Eh I know it's a scrunching gel and my hair would never work by styling via scrunch, but i had made this purchase without reading over too well and it was a travel size. I gotta say this gives my hair great shine for a gel. I would not repurchase but would use to correct flyways in maybe a ponytail or bun.
Its an ok gel for my 3b fine curls. Smells nice and works ok for 2nd day hair. I found that the hold did not work for me and I got alot of frizz
I just tried this on my type 2c-3a hair and it looks great! Minimal frizz, and nice fun curls. Not super defining but i used shea moisture and hair milk by carols daughter, and it isn't a problem!
My tube looks a little different from the one in the picture (mine is a sort of silvery-purple color), but I think I'm reviewing the right product. My son's girlfriend bought this for herself, mistaking it for the "tousling" instead of "twisting"(?) gel, so she gave it to me for my curly hair. This bottle of gel talks to you, in a way. On the back of "her" (the gel's) tube, she says, "USE ME"; "I'll keep frizz from making a big fuzz." Hmmmm. She also promises, "Work a little bit of me through wet or dry hair..." and she'll "Make those humid days feel like a spring breeze." Maybe I taught junior high just a bit too long, but I found myself snickering bawdily. (Sorry) I digress. I love to try new products, but I wouldn't purchase this one. I'm used to highly concentrated products, so it seemed just crazy that I needed what seemed like half the tube for ONE application. This gel feels light, watery, and slippery, and I couldn't seem to get it to the thickness where it would "set", and eventually dry. The next morning I wet my hair and I had to reapply a bunch more gel to get rid of frizz and get definition. Later in the day I needed to wet my hair a little, and add a little more gel to the top part of my head, which had "poodled". I like the scent very much. It's called "Mystique" but to me it smells pretty much like I remember the original (a la howling woman in a shower) Herbal Essences smelling a long long time ago. And who didn't like that scent? I love that this gel/serum is silicone, protein, and glycerin-free, but I highly suspect that at least one of those ingredients might be a necessity for my hair if I want to have lasting definition. This gel dulls any shine in my hair (no wonder given the amount I use) and it really doesn't have much hold. I'll admit, the times I used this I had to diffuse my hair a little, because it was taking too long to reach a stage I could call "damp". Perhaps if it's allowed to dry completely on its own, more definition can be achieved. For me it still doesn't have the kind of cast that leaves me confident it can restrain my hair and keep it in check.
I love this gel for my curls because I can find it everywhere on the ground and because it is affordable when on a budget. The trick for me is to use the Herbal Essence Hello Hydration as my leave in then seal in the moisture with JBCO before I apply this gel. The results are amazing because I end up with well defined touchable curls. I love it.
This is the first gel I've ever tried - only ever used mousses or nothing before. I think I might like gels now, but from the reviews, it sounds like I might have better experience elsewhere. Will keep searching for the best gel, but this is pretty good. Curl definition and I bought it because it was CG friendly, then decided I didn't want to go full CG.
It's not the absolute worst styling product I've ever tried, but it still sucked. It totally stripped my hair (even after using my amazingly hydrating leave-ins) and made it feel like straw. It gave some definition but is not as strong-hold as I thought it would be. Plus, the smell makes me nauseous. Back in the day I would have loved the smell, but once you get used to using natural products the strong artificial fragrance of HE is so chemical and disgusting.
The smell of this stuff is to die for. But I wish it had more hold. It's not something I absolutely love, im going to try something else once I run out. It works ok. I do like that it's CG too
This was my first CG gel. The scent is pleasant, and the hold was ok. Over time though, I ended up with buildup, and had to clarify more often than I wanted. Also I realized I needed more hold than HETT provides. Switched to a harder hold formula and haven't looked back.
Really do like this gel! Gives great hold without weighing my curls down and it gives my troublesome curls definition and shine. Can't say that it gave me soft curls though, it didn't give me crunchy ones either, but not the most touchable. The smell is to die for and it's super easy to scrunch into my hair and finger twirl if needed. Best for rainy or windy days.
This is my all time favourite gel and it's always in my rotation. Like most HE products it has a pleasant scent and isn't overpowering in my opinion. I've never used it on wet hair, only when damp and dry and it doesn't leave my hair crunchy at all. It doesn't weigh my fine hair down but still manages to give good hold with zero flaking. I usually like to diffuse but with this I can air dry and still have great results! A must try!
I love this gel. It smells sooo good and it works really well if your hair is damp. I use it every other morning when I wash my hair. And the curls stay the second day also if you do the pineapple hair thingy!
I love this stuff! It would be perfect if it had just a little more hold. It doesn't weigh my waves down, it smells good, and scrunches out really easily. But alas, I cannot use it in the winter months, I need something with a little more hold. I also wish it came in a bigger container, I use this stuff up too quickly.
This is the only gel I use, at least until I try something else. I gently scrunch it in wet with both hands, finger curl the wonky ones and voila, pretty decent curly hair that's defined and bouncy (Type 3, mostly B fyi, and looong). It really gets absorbed into your hair so I use about 2 quarter sized dollops. I can get up to half-way decent 3rd day hair with this stuff, so I'm not sure why people are having problems. I'd say on finer hair this gel is too heavy (like around your face) but on the rest it's just fine and light. If you get the crunch, just scrunch it out or *hint* use less gel. **I reeeally like it for finger curling**
This gel is horrible! I bought from a local store because on sale and I wish I didn't. It did give my curls more definition when I first applied few minute later my curls were gone and was hair was hard with flake. I never used it again after the first time
The only thing I like about this gel is the smell. I always heat up gel before I apply it by rubbing my hands together, and as soon as I go to put this on, the gel sticks to my hair, and PULLLS all the flyaways up so I look like a pom-pom. The smell is ALL I like.
Pros- It gives me great hold, and keeps away all of the unruly frizz. Cons- I have to use kind of a lot to keep my curls in check, unfortunately, that also gives me crunchy curls(:
If you like your hair to feel like straw & be super frizzy, then this gel is for you. If not, stay away! I am sooooo glad I only got a trial size of this horrible gel!
Smells pretty good and works great with the Curl Junkie leave-in conditioner. Looks best though on second day hair.
i love this gel (: but if i use to much (sometimes i do) my hair is horrible, frizzy and sticky.
I actually liked this light gel. It formed my curls well, had minimal flaking, rinses out easily, and give a lot of body. Its not one for a lot of hold or definition, but I prefer a full, natural look. So why is it missing a curl? Well first there's the over-abundance of fragrance. I actually like the fragrance of this, it reminds me of the old Salon Selective products (which I loved) that came out around 2000 and it smells a lot better than HESMU which gave me a headache, but they could stand to make it with a little less. The second is that it has dmdm hydantoin which I think what caused my itchies with Deva Curl (I used Deva Curl for years with no issue and then when they changed to the crap formula, hello itchies). I didn't really get itchy with this, but I'm afraid if I use it everyday, I will. I think the reason I don't itch is because the dmdm is cut with parabens. I don't understand why they didn't just use parabens alone. Despite their controversy, they are pretty non-irritating, unlike the formaldehyde releasing preservatives which everybody is switching to.
I do not like Herbal Essence products but this gel surprised me! The scent isn't bad and it absorbs into wet hair nicely. Sure, I used a lot, but that's normal for me. I keep this around as a back up.
This is a decent gel if nothing else is available, but I needed to use a lot to get a decent curl, which leads to gunky product buildup.
Love this gel! I apply it generously over V05 conditioner as a leave in, air dry, then scrunch out the crunch. It gives me great results! I've heard other reviewers mention that this gel doesn't give great hold, but I find using it over a leave in gives me just enough hold and beautiful shiny curls. Zero producty feel. I go through some hair gel, so for the price, this is perfect!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product, like i said in my "drug store products are my friend" post this is like one of my faves, HOWEVER it does make my hair dry and leaves residue so i just dont use it unless im going out the next day or something. also it takes a lot of product when using it. personally i dont use it to scrunch my curls i use it for two strand twist and its LOVELY results, the definition is AMAZING.
Disappointingly, this made my hair extremely dry and frizzy, even when I added extra conditioner.
Love, love, love this gel! This is the first gel I have ever used that has given me second day hair! I am new to CG, and have already built up quite an arsenal of products, but this gel is outstanding on my fine hair. Good hold and curl definition without a "product" look.
This is an average medium-hold gel. It works fine to give me a little definition with no crunch. But it's nothing special. I much prefer Biotera Styling Gel. It has a mild, unmemorable scent.
This gel doesnt do mutch to my hair. I scrunch it in, my hair is really curly for like two minutes and then it falls and is FRIZZY. It smells good, but it holds curl terribly and makes my hair crunchy. I dont think I'll buy this again.
I randomly bought this gel and I am so suprised by the results! It's awesome. Provided great curl definition and nice crunch while drying that scrunches out easily. Doesn't leave me with a wet look (which I hate) but soft defined clumpy curls. Excellent drugstore gel!
I would say this is a decent gel and is comparable to the results you get from the Deva gels. It gave me soft, defined clumpy waves/loose curls with little to no frizz. I was especially happy that it didn't look or feel product-y or greasy at all, and I was touching my hair all day because it was nice and soft. Though I wouldn't say I got amazing, show-stopping results, this truly is a great inexpensive default gel to go back to, and I'll always have a tube of this in my cabinet. Note to the last reviewer - that any cones with PEG in front of them are water soluble and thus CG!
