This is an unsung hero in the world of curly girl products. I've used a zillion curl defining creams and gels. I like several. But this one is my favorite now. It's really a cream/gel, and I love its consistency. A little bit goes a long way. It controls frizz very well and really does help to define curls. I apply a quarter-size dab to my hair, run a wide-toothed comb through it to distribute the product, then lightly scrunch with a microfiber towel. I then don't touch my hair until it's dry. At that point, if there's a crunchiness, I just scrunch it easily with my fingers. My hair is then soft and nicely defined. I have not felt the need to add any other gel for extra hold, but I'm sure that you could do so successfully. I find that I'm better able to get decent second- or even third-day hair using this product. I hope it is never discontinued. FYI: I like this product so much that I have posted this review on several sites.
I bought this at Whole Foods on a whim because I was running low on products and this looked good enough so I decided to give it a try. My first experience with this was horrific. I used it straight out of the shower like I normally would with my Devacurl products and it did nothing but make my hair a frizzy sopping wet mess. I gave it another try because I really believed in it and the second try did it. I use about a quarter size when my hair is damp and sort of twist it in and scrunch and my curls are bouncy and defined. The smell is a little bit like... a lotion I want to say haha, but it doesn't linger too much. I will definitely buy again!
The shampoo and leave-in for wavy to curly were my first EVER curly products, and I used them every other days last year with good results (I think...) until my hair got super dry. I also bought this, but it left me dry, crunchy, and frizzy. Well, my other products weren't working for me recently, so I decided to try the whole line again. Turned out, I was using it wrong the first time! The first time, I used too much shampoo, no rinse-out conditioner or cowashing, not enough leave-in, and too much of this gel. Now, I cowash, apply a large dallop of the Beautiful Curls Leave-in, and scrunch in a quarter-sized puddle of this. I have ringlets and spirals now that are soft and moisturized :) I am beginning to love this line again! I use the shampoo about twice a week to clarify, too. I'm so glad I still had all of these in my cabinet! Oh, just so you're aware, this is definitely more of a cream-gel than a gel. Most creams provided hydration but no hold/control, and most gels provided hold/control for me but left me dried out. With this, I get controlled, soft curls--best of both worlds! :)
Good product for a good price and without any drying alcohols, silicons or sulfates. Works best if you apply it to soaking wet hair.
I have tried many curl defining products on the market from kinky curly to mixed chicks. I was eager to find get my hands on this product because of its reviews. However, it caused VISIBLE flaking along my roots and I would end up never being able to wear my hair down because of it. It did not make my hair too scrunchy though. The texture is not a gel, but more of a butter. My main problem was that it was not enough power in the product to define my hair. My hair was frizzy, poofy, and DRY. I have 3b-3c hair. I do not recommend this product to anyone. If you have curlier hair, it will not work and will cause dryness. If you have wavier hair, it will just leave flakiness.
I saw this at my local health-food store and kept wondering about it, so I decided that for the price I was willing to take the plunge despite the lack of reviews for my hair type (I have fine, short 2c/3a curls). And I'm really glad I did! It dried really, really crunchy, but easily scrunched out with a little bit of my favorite serum-cream and left soft, defined curls with plenty of volume (in a good way). I scrunched in 2-3 quarter-size puddles after using Deva OneCondition as a leave-in, and then scrunched with my hands coated in serum once my hair was completely dry; this is my normal styling method. I'm not especially sensitive to smells, but the scent of this didn't bother me at all. Also, unless I'm missing something, from looking at the ingredients this seems to be glycerin-free even though it's not listed as such. Since I've been having trouble finding glycerin-free products that I like, I'm really happy about this! I think this will really become a staple of mine in the winter. And, from what I've read, the texture and the results are similar to KCCC, but with way, way less fuss.
I love this gel so much that I just went back to whole foods today and bought two more jars of this so I won't have to run out anytime soon! Before this, the only product that would give me decent 2nd n 3rd day hair results was ecostyler gel (and even then I couldn't manipulate too much because it didn't prevent frizz for long). This product right here, gets me 3 days and sometimes even 4 days of great hair, then I can wear it in a pony puff the next day if I'm not ready to cowash. This gives me great shine and soft bouncy defined curls. When I air dry, I do get that hard crunchy feeling (which I honestly don't mind because I have alot of hair and it keeps my hair in place until fully dry) Then the crunch quickly fades once I shake and scrunch out my hair to give it some lift in the morning. I get compliments everytime I use this gel. I can't say enough great things about this product. AND its all natural and reasonably priced?? This is definitely one of my staples!
I love this gel! Perfect for defining curls and doesn't leave a lot of residue like other gels. Smells great too!
I wanted to like this b/c the ingredients are really good and one can get it on the ground at Whole Foods. But, it doesn't have enough hold for my hair, leaves my hair crunchy (but not as crunchy as Kinky-Curly Curling Custard) and leaves my hair dry. I've used this product 3 times, once by itself w/ no leave-in conditioner just to see how moisturizing it was, I used it w/ the Beautiful Curls leave-in conditioner (which I'll give a separate review) underneath and then I used the BC leave-in and sealed with my castor oil-grape seed oil mix. All three times my hair took FOREVER to dry, dried crunchy and with no moisture. It took a few days of me misting my hair w/ my water, glycerin and castor oil mix to get moisture back in my hair. This will work for someone but it just didn't work for me.
Ingredient Attributes: moisture, frizz control, anti-humectant
