I have been using this product for over 5 years now and I swear by it. I'm type 3a/3b and it's perfect for reducing frizz and sculpting curls. I use it along with an argon oil to weigh down my hair and add softness.
My hairdresser introduced me to Potion No.9 back in the 90's. He had the most gorgeous long red hair that he wore in a pony tail that went all the way down his back. He claimed the secret to his long locks was this product and never cutting. I have very fine wavy hair that is chemically treated with 2 process hair color. As long as I was using Potion No. 9, my hair grew longer than it ever had before, because it wasn't breaking off. For the past year or so, I've been negligent and my long locks don't look the same. I finally picked some up today, and I couldn't even wait to open it, because I always loved the scent. I don't know why some people say it's too heavy. Maybe try using less? I'm going to buy it from this site now because it's a lot less expensive than my local drug store or beauty supply.
This product I have been using since the 90's. I am an extremely dry 3B. Those of you new at trying Potion 9 and have tried it and feel disappointment with it ~ give it a chance. If you have very dry, parched locks it is going to take more than a few times to notice a difference. This stuff actually changed the texture of my hair for the better. I hope it never gets discontinued or "reformulated". If you are new to the product use it liberally for awhile. Use quarter size for each sections of your hair. Not a quarter size for your whole head. Try to go three days or longer between washings and you can use a little in between to freshen your hair. Your natural hair oil mixed with the product is so healthy for your hair and scalp. I promise you will notice a difference within the next two months. After awhile you will notice you won't have to use that much. Give it a chance. NOT REALLY FOR FINE HAIR.
Love this stuff. This is the leave in conditioner- try the styling stuff. Works great! Best product ever on my curls
This stuff is amazing. My mom used to buy this back in the 90's when I was a little girl, back when I had a crazy unruly afro haha! I have tried many other curl products over the years and I'm now grown up and decided to buy this the other day and I have been using this for one week and have fallen in love with it all over again.
This is the hair product I've been faithful to the longest, out of everything I've tried over the years. This stuff is quite simply FANTASTIC. The real Sebastian product is great, but I've been buying the generic by Sally for several years now. It's an exact replica of Sebastian Potion 9 but far cheaper. I pick up a 6.8 oz tube for $5.99 with my Sally's card. I have 3A frizz-bomb curls and this is the only thing that tames it. I follow the Deva method, but first squeeze out my hair just a bit, apply at least two quarter-sized dollops, and then gel. If I use a third dollop, my crazy curls become much more relaxed--almost wavy. I swear, this stuff solves almost every hair disaster. Super humid day? Put double the normal amount on. Frizz creeping up on you? Rub some between your palms and smooth your hair down. Some leave-ins can make my hair look greasy, but it's near-impossible with this stuff. It keeps my hair in great shape; my hairdresser has quit trying to sell me expensive conditioners. I can't actually remember how long I've been buying it, but it's been well over five years, probably around seven or eight.
Love it! It gives great hold, is non-sticky and doesn't make my hair crispy. I don't want to know how my hair felt/looked before I found this.
This product works suprisingly well and has easy distribution properties, a non-overwhelming scent, and a relatively long lasting (frizz-free,non-heavy) effect.
This product didn't really work well for my 3C curls. It gave good curl definition, but not enough moisture. I wouldn't buy it again.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this product. It is my absolute favorite. It smells nice, makes my hair feel great, and smooths away frizzies without sacrificing ringlets! 5 curls!!
This is the best ever! I leave it in and my curls are soft, not frizzy. For extra conditioning I put it on and heat a towel in the microwave and wrap around my head for a few minutes - great stuff
It's a very nice light conditioner, when used with a light hand, otherwise it can make fine hair look greasy & weighed down. It smells heavenly.
Well, on it's own, Potion 9 doesn't do much for my hair. I sort of get really soft, but ultra - frizzy curls. However, this stuff is great in combo with my other favorite curl stuff, Garnier Fructis soft curl cream. It has made my morning routine so simple and quick. I hop out of the shower, throw my hair in a towel (don't rub the hair with the towel though, that creates too much frizz). Then I spray my hair down with some leave in conditioner (repairology, from infusium 23...I think). I brush the conditioner through to make sure that it's all even in my hair. Then I run some of the Potion 9 all over my head, and then some Garnier soft curl cream to give it some structure, and I'm done. Then I just keep scrunching my hair all the way to class, and it works great! My hair gets well defined curls without being all crunchy (ick!).
With or without heat this products works pretty well for my curls. Ive used it as a leave-in after a wash and wear do, although it leaves my hair shiny and hydrated, not enough frizz control and definition. I like this more if I am doing a roller set (with heat).
A few years ago this was my HG after my mother's hair stylist recommended it to me. I had a huge tub of it, and I'm not sure why I don't use it anymore. I suppose I just ran out of it and didn't feel like spending $30 (it was more expensive back then) on it. 3 curls only because I don't know how it works now.
My hair has been horribly parched for the last couple of months. Despite conditioning treatments and zero shampoo my hair felt like straw. This was the only product that helped, and it helped a LOT. I tried the Sally's generic version and in just a couple of uses my hair was back to its old, healthy self. New HG.
if you were to blend silk, satin, cashmere and pure cotton together, you would get how soft my hair felt after i used this stuff...it's incredible
a really great leave-in! it defines the heck out of my curls, and makes my hair real shiny and soft. the only reason i didn't give it 4 curls is that it doesn't really do anything in terms of moisturizing, so i have to use it with another leave-in. also, i found it to be a bit drying if used everyday, so i switch it in and out of my product rotation. but nonetheless, a great purchase! you only need a little bit to get a good hair day!
This is my all time favorite treatment/styler to apply before a small amt. of gel. It smells great, distributes easy, and leaves curls defined.
eh...I can't really say that this product contributed anything special to my hair. It's a leave in, but after my hair dries, it never feels conditioned. regardless of the amount I use, I end up with product build up. I know it has great reviews, but didn't hit the spot with me.
I was so disappointed in this product. I had heard such good things about it, so I justified spending the extra money. What a waste! This did not moisturize my (3b type) hair at all. It felt dry, was hard to comb through, didn't get good curl pattern, and still had quite a bit of frizz. I ended up throwing it out.
Best product ever. I've been using it for four years. Nothing else I've tried has come close.
I use Potion 9 as a gel and it works great. Good definition, smell, and it leaves my curls soft vs. crunchy. The best gel I have found so far.
Average leave-in that has an egg yolk like consistency. I require more moisture than this gives. I prefer Kiehls leave-in.
This is one of the best leave-in treatments ever created. I've been using it on and off now for gosh, at least 10 years (a friend first told me about it in 1994). It's loaded with lightweight oils and other moisturizing ingredients... and for some, it may actually double as styling aid b/c it contains PVP, guar, and hydroxyethylcellulose. For me, it pairs very well with other gels (I tend to use it with Biolage Gelee b/c they smell similar). A fantastic product that every curly head should try at least once in her life.
I JUST discovered this product. It is wonderful. Every day that I use it, the results are better than the last. It leaves just a little bit of hold, so that I can pair it with a variety of gels. It leaves my hair very shiny and moisturized. Love it!
holds a pivotal role in my hair routine. it adds shine, curl definition, and maintains the health of my hair. note.. generic isn't nearly as good as original so make sure to pay for the naem brand
I love this product!! Best leave in I have ever found. It keeps my hair soft and helps with definition. I add oil to it for even more effectiveness. This is a HG for me
This is too much for my hair. I guess if you have thick hair with tighter curls then it'd be good. too heavy and weighs my hair down.
Not good for my wavy/curly hair. Created frizz when I was trying to reduce it and added more gunk to my build up list so I had to do a vin. rinse more often.
It seemed drying when used alone for my 3b,3c,4a relaxed curls. When used with hair oil... this was OUTSTANDING. It was like the conditioner held the oil in until my next wash. Outstanding. Made my hair soft and managable.
My stylist recommended this as a healthy leave-in product, but it doesn't give me enough control for my frizzy 2A hair. Interesting orange color.
2c) This did make my hair softer but it didn't do anything for curl definition when I air dried. It works well for smoothing/straightening with a blowdryer. Also, my hair tends to get stiff if I use it a few days in a row. But it smells really good and feels smooth without being heavy.
This product is very similar to Paul Mitchell The Cream, and gave great curl formation- very soft with a hint of hold (make sure to distribute evenly or in damp hair). I've tried both the Generic version and the original, and they both work the same, although the original smells better.
The smell is odd and hard for me to place. Something between orange sherbet and dish soap? This stuff didn't do much for my hair but left it feeling coated and dry.
I live by this stuff. It smells wonderful and does not make your hair sticky or stiff. It can be alittle pricey, but definately worth the investment! If you try it, you will NEVER go back! Only negative is that if you use too much or don't work it in enough it flakes!
This is the best stuff ever! The only product in the world that makes my long, frizzy, spiral curly hair soft and non-frizzy. My hair normaly has a straw and hay feel to it, but not after using this. I have a great texture and well formed curls with this. This is worth every penny and a must buy! I have tried every product under the sun and this is the best!
This is a great product! It smells great too! I have been using it for several years now. It provides great curl definition without that dry, crunchy look that gel often gives. I do need a bit more hold on humid or blustery days, but overall, this has been a wonderful product!
So this doesn't work as well on wavy hair. I found it very heavy no matter how little I used, and when I used a little, it didn't detangle or leave my hair smooth enough. My hair was shiny but it made my hair stringy and weighed down. For you tighter curlies, the weight might be good, but for wavies, it's too much.
This stuff is great! I recently tried the Sally's Generic version and it's just as good. Plus, it's 1/3 of the cost.
I'd rate it one of the best hair products to come out in the last five years. It really softens hair, smells great and reduces frizz. Great to put on after you come out of the pool.
Potion 9 is a leave-in conditioner with a light hold that is perfect for defining my coarse, frizzy curls. I have been using it for years, and have yet to find anything comparable. It weighs down my hair, which is definitely desirable since I would like the Bride of Frankenstein without it. I think this is a great product for curly hair since it acts like a gel but without drying it out. My hair is soft and I have great curls for days after using it. I saturate my hair with Potion 9 when it is still completely wet and then diffuse. The hold is too light for humid days, though, and I have to add a gel on those days.
