How to Get Medieval Braids

Bun

Braids have played a predominant role in hairstyles for several seasons and, according to The Today Show, the trend will continue through the spring season. Whether you are looking to add a touch of classiness, a bit of edge or a hint of playfulness, braids are an easy way to spruce up your curly ‘do.

According to Ouidad Stylist, Morgan Willhite “braids are a hot trend this season and there is something very feminine about rocking a Medieval braid.” Medieval braids are ideal for curly hair and allows for a loose, effortless look.

Mastering Medieval Braids

  1. With clean, wet hair, run Ouidad Double Detangler through your mane to get rid of any knots
  2. While your curly hair is still wet, use Ouidad Shine Glaze Serum to smooth the hair; apply a quarter sized amount to the palm of your hands and work from end to roots, focus the product in the middle to end of the hair.
  3. It is ideal to braid the hair once it is try. Begin braiding a few tiny strands of hair on each side of the part in your hair. Use Ouidad Clear Control Curl Definer and Sealer and coat each section as your braid it. Pull the sides of your hair back, including the braids and secure it with a barrette or pin.
  4. Braids should be loose on the top of the head and tighter at the bottom.Complete the braid with rubber bands, ponytail holders, or ties to keep the braid in place.

Shea Moisture: Built on Tradition and Quality Ingredients

Bun

When Richelieu Dennis was asked how he came up with the idea for SheaMoisture, he said the company is actually nearly a century in the making.

As a 21-year-old widow Dennis’ grandmother Sofi made handmade African shea butter soaps, which she sold all over the countryside in Sierra Leone to support her family. Later, Dennis decided to use his the experience he gained helping his grandmother to create shea butter soaps, incorporating four generations of recipes into his handmade natural bath and body products.

“Growing up, that’s what I did,” says Dennis.

Dennis and his childhood friend Nyema Tubman both were born in Liberia, but fled civil war after most of their possessions were destroyed. They both immigrated to the United States and they found themselves without resources or employment. In 1992, they began to sell their wares along the sidewalks of Harlem. Their routine was to make the soaps and shea butters in the early hours of the morning, load them into their rickety van and then set up products on tables on the street at sunrise. They would sell them until the sun went down.

Their work ethic paid off. By the second year, they formed Sundial Creations and the SheaMoisture brand.

SheaMoisture shampoos, conditioners and styling aids have gained a following among customers of all ethnicities, with all hair types. Favorites include Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl & Style Conditioning Milk and Shea Restorative Trauma Masque.

SheaMoisture products are carried throughout the United States at retailers such as Target, Duane Readeand Walgreens. Sundial’s Nubian Heritage brand is carried at natural food retailers such as Whole Foods, Wegman’s and Vitamin Shoppe.

Just like Sofi’s original blends, SheaMoisture’s products contain combinations of exotic herbs, oils and butters, including African black soap, “raw” or certified organic, African shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, tamanu oil and green tea extract. Whenever possible, raw materials are purchased from fair-trade co-ops throughout Africa to ensure co-op workers are paid a fair wage and offered training to better their lives. Products all are made in small batches at the company’s Amityville, N.Y., factory to ensure freshness. Packing and shipping is done with recycled materials.

All of SheaMoisture’s products are free from all chemicals, including parabens, animal ingredients, mineral oil, petrolatum and synthetic color and fragrance.

With Dennis acting as founder and CEO and Tubman acting as COO, manufacturing moved to a 3,000-square foot plant, with products sold through a network of street vendors, convenience stores, health-food stores and beauty supply retailers.

Sundial’s two brands—SheaMoisture and Nubian Heritage—have developed a reputation for high-quality products at value prices, driven by Dennis’ vision to create products using rare natural ingredients from around the world to provide skin- and hair-care solutions for people of all enthicities.

“If somebody is looking for a natural product that answers the clean living within their family or lifestyle, they really should give us a try,” Dennis says. “No one has clean a product that works as well as ours.”

In 2008, Sundial Creations received the Black Enterprise “Emerging Business of the Year Award,” which recognizes businesses that have posed themselves for growth by carving out a special niche.

Dennis attributes the company’s success to keeping its focus, even as it has grown.

“We’ve always been focused on natural,” he says. “We’ve learned over the years how to improve upon natural products—be it for hair, skin or babies. And we’ve always focused on what the needs of the consumer are, rather just on what we think can sell.”

Curlformers: A Must-Have for Many Curlies

Curlformers

Developed by UK-based Hair Flair Ltd, Curlformers is a patented curling tool used to create a variety of curls, from ringlet spirals to loose-barrel waves. Using noodle-shaped orange and pink “curlformers,” curls are formed inside rather than outside, as with conventional curlers, without the use of potentially damaging flat or curling irons.

“I love Curlformers because it gives my usually curly hair beautiful spirals that are so easy to manage,” wrote one NaturallyCurly member. “Curlformers has definitely made styling my hair a breeze with less frizz, and less tangled hair. Now I have the cutest curly ponytail.”

“Just a little hairspray and beautiful shiny curls!” said another curly. “I’m thrilled with my Curlformers!”

NaturallyCurly talked to the creators of Curlformers about the growing popularity of the tool.

NC: Curlformers have become a must-have for many curly girls, but were they originally developed for curly hair?

Curlformers: It was always our intention that Curlformers should have universal appeal. They were developed to help girls create flawless, smooth, spiral curls and waves regardless of hair type and texture and without having to apply the harsh heat of a styling iron.

One of the many great benefits of using Curlformers is that they’re kind to your hair. This makes them especially popular with curly girls because as you’re only too aware, naturally curly hair can often be fragile and susceptible to breakage, and subjecting it to damaging intense heat is a big no-no. The other reason they’re so popular with naturally curly girls is because they can transform a head of unruly frizz into defined, smooth curls.

NC: What are the different ways you’re seeing people use Curlformers, and how can you different looks be achieved with them?

Curlformers: For sure, they definitely have that universal appeal. They are being used by girls/women around the world and on all hair types and they can also be used on hair extensions, without risk of damaging the bonds.

The versatility of Curlformers means they can be used in so many different ways and to create a variety of looks. For example, if you have naturally curly long hair, you could use the Long and Wide Curlformers to coax your curls into smooth spirals or you could apply the Long and Extra Wide Curlformers to transform your curls into a loose wave, or beautiful barrel curls. We find that the Extra Long and Wide Curlformers are very popular with girls who have very long fairly straight hair and/or kinky hair and they use them to create long spiral curls one day, loose sexy waves the next or to just add texture. With a little experimenting, these different looks can be achieved quite simply. For example you can try applying them root-to-tip on a full head or just at random throughout your hair.

Or you might apply them part-way down the hair section, giving you curls and waves around the bottom. You can apply different width Curlformers (choose from narrow, wide and extra wide) to create a more natural look or you can apply the same size and even the same color to create a uniform curl. Other factors include how you dress out the hair and whether you separate gently, pull your fingers through the curls to loosen or even brush through to leave you with body and soft waves. Then of course you can put your hair up or in a semi-updo, accessorize and have curls cascading down around your face. The choice is endless.

NC: What makes CurlFormers unique from other products on the market?

Curformers: The uniqueness is that Curlformers do the work for you, giving perfect curls every time. There is no burning, no wrapping, no weakened hair and no disappointments. We know from the feedback we get from girls who have tried every other gadget in the name of curls—there is nothing else like them! They use more of a traditional “wash and set” technique, which means the curls last longer than they do if you use a curling iron. The curl is formed on damp/freshly washed hair inside the Curlformer, which takes the fiddling and guess work away and does all the hard work for you. You don’t need pins, clips or anything to keep them in place—just that essential magic Styling Hook for application and then leave until hair is completely dry. They can be used in conjunction with your favorite products, and as they’re kind to your hair, you’ll find that you’ll save a fortune on repair treatments.

NC: Are you seeing a trend toward more straight-haired girls wanting curls?

Curlformers: Definitely. At the Royal Wedding in London last week, we had some of the UK’s top, award-winning stylists including Andrew Barton and the Royal Crimper himself—Richard Ward—talking about the return of the curl. Interviewed about Catherine Middleton’s style on Sky News, celebrity stylist Andrew Barton said it was evident that straightening irons have had their day! From the fashion catwalks of the world to Westminster Abbey, girls are being encouraged to embrace their natural texture and romantic curls and soft feminine waves are everywhere. Thanks to Catherine Middleton, this trend looks set to continue, and over the next few months she may yet be spotted going about her Royal duties in Curlformers!

VIDEO: Celebrity Stylist Danilo Demonstrates Latest in Pantene Curly Hair Series

Every once in a while, we curlies want to try something new. The versatility of curls is endless, and it’s fun to experiment with our hair.

Pantene celebrity stylist Danilo is a master at re-purposing natural curls to achieve a new look. In the video below, he demonstrates a hairstyle that he likes to call the Hollywood Glamour Set.

In order to achieve this look, Danilo started with freshly shampooed hair. He first applies Pantene Curly Hair Series Heat Protection & Shine, which provides heat protection as well as softness. Our curls are precious and fragile, so it’s very important to always use a heat protectant before applying any type of heat.

Before using a diffuser, Danilo used Pantene Curly Hair Series Curl Enhancing Spray Gel on the model’s hair. Diffusing curly hair reduces frizz and helps the natural curls to come to life. The Pantene Curly Hair Series Curl Enhancing Spray Gel combined with a diffuser results in soft, beautiful curls.

The alteration to your natural curls is achieved by separating 1-2 inch wide sections of your hair and using a curling iron. Each section is then pinned until all hair has been curled. Then, remove the pins, run your fingers through your hair, add a little hair spray such as Pantene Curly Hair Series Satin Hold Hairspray and you’re done! The Hollywood Glamour Set by Danilo is a great look to try, but don’t forget to love and embrace the curls you were born with.

4 Grow-Out Tips From Jessicurl

Jessica McGuinty, CEO and founder of Jessicurl, provides four key tips to get long, strong curls.

Jessicurl’s Confidence Collection:
Define Your Curls, Define Yourself
This amazing collection includes:
Hair Cleansing Cream
Confident Coils
Too Shea!
Weekly Deep Conditioning Treatment

Like a watched pot never boiling, once you decide to grow your hair out, it can seem like a never-ending process. There are some aspects that are in your control, however, so follow these tips and you’ll maximize your hair’s natural speed of growth.

1. Diet. Don’t neglect your diet. You need to nourish your hair from the outside and the inside. Make sure to get adequate nutrition, and supplement with biotin, as it has been shown to increase hair growth. I can attest to this personally. A few months after starting to take biotin, I found I was having to touch up my roots more often because my hair was growing noticeably faster.
It is also important that your diet contains enough protein and fats, as with too little of either it can become dry, brittle and more prone to breakage.

2. Be gentle. As you grow out your hair, you want to avoid anything that will cause the ends to break off. This means limited brushing and combing. Curly hair really shouldn’t be brushed when it’s dry as it will make it frizz and kill your curl definition. You can sufficiently detangle with a wide-toothed comb in the shower while the hair is saturated in conditioner. The conditioner will create slip that allows the comb to glide through without snagging or breaking. Start at the bottom and gently work your way up.

3. Limit heat styling. If you need to use heat tools to dry your hair faster, be sure your blow dryer has a diffuser on it to keep the hair from getting blown all over. It’s really best to avoid flat ironing altogether as it will really dry out your hair and lead to breakage. If you have to do it, try to limit it to 2 times a week. The goal is to keep the hair as moisturized as possible throughout the process. That leads me to…

4. Moisturize it! Soft hair is healthy hair, and healthy hair grows faster. Once a week do a deep conditioning treatment for at least 30 minutes to infuse your hair with more moisturize than it gets daily. Regular scalp massages are also recommended as it gets the blood flowing to your scalp and helps stimulate growth. Jessicurl Stimulating Scalp Massage Oil was created for exactly this purpose.

By eating right, treating your hair gently and giving it lots of moisture and TLC, you’ll notice it growing in no time!

Pantene Curly Hair Series

Pantene’s got a new line specifically designed for those of us with some spring in our strands! Pantene Curly Hair Series tackles the issues curlies face so we can embrace our natural hair texture and curl pattern. From cleansing to styling and even deep treatments, the products in this line work together to give you repaired, moisturized, frizz-free curls every time.

If you love the wash n’ go look, the Curly Hair Series can help!

To start off, cleanse the hair with the Dry to Moisturized Shampoo. It gently removes previous product build up without stripping the hair. Moisturizing ingredients work to reduce the friction and rough feeling we often get after using other shampoos. Properly cleansed hair will be more responsive to conditioner and styling products.

Next, apply the Dry to Moisturized Conditioner. It’s got moisturizing slip, perfect for detangling curly hair. It coats the hair to protect it from damage and drying out.

As a special treat, Pantene Curly Hair Series also has a Deep Moisture Treatment. Work it into the hair from tip to root, and remember to focus on your ends or other damaged sections of your curls. Take this time to detangle with a wide-toothed comb. The Deep Moisture Treatment only needs to sit on the hair for 5 minutes! Rinse with lukewarm or cool water to close the cuticle and increase the shine. Over time, the treatment will add the manageability and definition of your curls!

To style in your natural curl pattern, divide your hair into easy to manage sections. Usually, a combination of products get the desired defined look. Pantene Curly Hair Series Anti-Frizz Straightening Creme and Curl Defining Mousse work together to get smooth and defined shiny curls. Combine a squirt of both products into your palms, emulsify, and run through each section of wet hair from root to tip. The Anti-Frizz Straightening Creme works as a serum—even though you’re not flat ironing your hair, it will smooth down the cuticles and prevent flyaways. The Curl Defining Mousse provides the hold that’ll keep your curls in tact all day.

After applying to each section, use a diffuser attachment to dry the hair without blowing a gust of air and disturbing the curl formation.

The result: shiny, defined and moisturized curls from Pantene!
