Meet Yasmin. She’s considering transitioning to natural hair but has lovely color-treated AND relaxed hair, a seemingly dangerous combination, right? However, with the help of a few key Carol's Daughter products, maintaining her hair’s best health will be a breeze. Don’t believe me? Check out this video to get the scoop! Makeda’s curls are phenomenal! To get the absolute best results, remember to deep condition your hair (at the very least) once a month. To achieve the best volume, try partially drying your hair with a blow dryer on a low setting until hair is about 75% damp (not completely dry). Using medium sized sections, begin twisting the hair in two strand twists. Allow to dry completely before removing. Proceed with styling as Eric does the in the video below. Enjoy!!

Carol's Daughter model Litza has gorgeous, color-treated curls. However, the constant bleaching and coloring has left her hair extremely damaged and prone to breakage. With the help of our resident hair stylist, Eric Bland, we were able to help nourish her hair back to health. Keep in mind this recipe works for all hair types, and a little of each product goes a long way. Enjoy!

Have you ever washed your hair and felt like it still wasn’t clean?

If so, then it’s time to detoxify. The Ultimate Hair Detox features our Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo and Conditioner, designed to rid your hair of any and all product build up.

Over the weekend I decided to deeply cleanse my hair using our Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo.

Some of us use many different types of products on our hair on a daily basis—creams, pomades, gels, sprays, you name it. So much so that when we proceed with our regular wash routine, our strands are sometimes left feeling dull and full of residue. When this happens, it’s time to “detox”. Our new Rosemary Mint Purifying Shampoo and Conditioner (aka. “The Ultimate Hair Detox”), gets rid of product buildup and toxins deep down. Refreshing, tingly and fresh, it’s like a “pick me up” for your scalp.

Most anti-residue shampoos are made using harsh chemicals and detergents. “The Ultimate Hair Detox” is made using only the finest ingredients including Rosemary and Marine extracts, menthol and Peppermint oil, and as always, are SLS- and paraben-free.

After washing your hair, you’re going to need to condition (of course!). The Rosemary Mint Purifying Conditioner will moisturize and soften your hair, while also strengthening and nourishing. For an ever deeper conditioning treatment, apply a plastic cap and apply heat (either a heating cap or tabletop dryer will suffice) for about 30 minutes. Rinse and style as usual.

Keep in mind that whenever your hair feels like an “8” on the 1 to 10 “Dirty Scale”, this will definitely take you to a zero!

Best of luck to you in your hair journey… Peace.

Dear Lisa: My color-treated hair is extremely dry and damaged. I try to get my hair trimmed every two months but I don’t know what to do about the excessive dryness and breakage. Any suggestions?

Dear Mona: I know your hair must be very thirsty from the harsh climate up there in Maine. Always keep in mind that moisturizing is key in treating your parched mane. Our Black Vanilla collection is specially formulated to revitalize dry, damaged, chemically treated hair:

  1. To begin, dampen hair and apply Black Vanilla Herbal Shampoo and massage into a lather. Rinse and repeat as necessary.
  2. Using fingers, apply Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie from roots to ends, and comb hair to ensure even distribution. For instant conditioning, leave on a for a minute or two and rise thoroughly. For a deep conditioning treatment, leave on for 15-30 minutes and rinse. Add a plastic cap and moderate heat for the most intense results.
  3. As the final conditioning step in this ritual, liberally spray Black Vanilla Leave-in Conditioner on damp hair and style as desired. Alternatively, use on dry hair anytime as a refreshing conditioning aid.
  4. To soothe an itchy scalp or condition dry hair anytime, apply a few drops of Lisa’s Hair Elixir into the palm of your hand. Rub hands together and massage scalp or work through damp or dry hair.

Hope this helps. Be sure to come back and let us know the results! Post in the comments section below!

Q: My little one’s hair is unruly (for lack of a better word)! Washing and detangling her hair has become a nightmare. Is there anything I can do to make “hair time” a little more pleasurable (for the both of us)? HELP!

A: “Hair time” should be the perfect time for fun and bonding with your little princess. Use this time to ask about school, her best friend and her big dreams.

This fun time is now possible with a “New Magical Beauty Collection” presented by Carol’s Daughter and Disney. Inspired by the upcoming Disney film “The Princess and the Frog”, these genuinely natural products are free of parabens, harsh detergents and are pediatrician tested. The collection includes a gentle shampoo, conditioner, detangler and bubble bath.

First, cleanse your princess’ hair using the “Beauty Within” Shampoo (contains nourishing Aloe Leaf Juice). Shampoo hair in sections if necessary.

Next, using our “Inner Shine” Conditioner (fortified with shine boosting Sunflower Seed oil, Olive and Sweet Almond oil) apply a liberal amount to each section, using a wide tooth comb, begin detangling at the bottom and gently work your way up to the scalp.
Rinse in sections and blot hair with a paper towel.

To style, spritz the “Dream Big” Detangler onto each section, using fingers to gently detangle and style as usual.

Help keep your daughter looking and feeling her absolute best, both inside and out. It’s OUR duty!

Peace & Blessings,
Lisa Price

Many times, consumers, as well as prospective consumers, are not sure which products will work best for them. To make choosing products a little bit easier, we’ve developed our very own Hair How-To Videos. Various hair types are covered—from weaves to locs to chemically treated hair. More importantly, we want to share with you some of the many recipes that you can create using products from our hair care system. We’ve invited an expert stylist, used regular people just like you and me (not models or paid spokespersons) with many different types of hair, in many different conditions, and put together a selection of easy step by step videos to help you learn about which of our products work well on your type of hair.

Keep in mind, our recipes are just suggestions; you can mix and match to create your own system at home, after all, who knows your hair better than you do! In the video, we tell you what every product does and show you how to use it.

Hair Type - Natural Curls (Medium)

Q: I’m interested in going natural, but I don’t want to chop off my relaxed ends—yet. Can you suggest any natural hair care styles that would help foster hair growth while flattering and keeping my hair healthy as well? I’m trying to avoid heat as much as possible.

A: Good question! More and more women of color are leaving behind the old “relaxer” days of yore. However, most are not ready to make the biggest commitment of all- chopping off those relaxed ends (otherwise known as BC’ing or “big chopping”). It is always best to chop off relaxed ends but for those who aren’t quite ready to make the plunge, there are other alternatives. If you’re looking for an easy, low-maintenance transition, try donning braids, twists or cornrows. To care for your hair in between styles, try the following:

First, stay away from sulfates! Sulfates are harsh detergents used to create lather; they aren’t necessary to cleanse the hair. Our Black Vanilla Shampoo does a great job of cleansing and moisturizing color treated and/or relaxed hair. Some might also like to try co-washing rather than shampooing. Co-washing consists of cleansing the hair with a basic rinse out conditioner (cheap drugstore brands work well- try the Herbal Essences line). Depending on your hair type and schedule, cleanse hair as often as necessary (but not too often).

Next: Condition! Conditioning your tresses after cleansing is extremely important for natural and (especially) transitioning hair. Our Hair Smoothies provide great slip and manageability. These smoothies can be used as a regular rinse out or as a deep intensive treatment. Those transitioning should deep condition their hair at least once every two weeks. In your case, I would recommend deep treating once per week. Since you are caring for two textures (the relaxed hair and the natural hair), it is very common for the hair to become brittle and break off at the line of demarcation. You want to avoid that as much as possible. To deep condition: Simply apply liberally to your soaking wet hair in sections and cover with a plastic cap. Using a heating cap or hair dryer, allow conditioner to penetrate for about 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse.

Lastly, massage into your hair a few drops of Lisa’s Hair Elixir (a little goes a long way, 4 drops would probably suffice). Part hair into medium/small sections and create two strand twists using a little of our Hair Balm on the length and at the ends (you’ll want to end up with anywhere between 10 to 15 twists once complete). Allow hair to air dry overnight.

In the morning, undo twists, separate and fluff!! If necessary, spritz hair with a little of our Tui Jojoba Shea Butter Hair Sheen.

Hope this helps and good luck to you in your hair journey.

Peace & Blessings,
Lisa Price

If your curls are dry, frizzy and lack definition, this recipe is just for you! You’ll have a perfect healthy head of curls in no time. Simply follow these easy steps:

  1. Treat yourself to a pre-shampoo hair and scalp conditioning treatment. To start, warm-up Khoret Amen Hair Oil. Beginning at the top of your head, massage the oil into your scalp, and then gently detangle hair using a wide-toothed comb. Remember to start from your ends and work upward towards your roots- it’s the least stressful, painless way to detangle.
  2. Wake up your scalp with deep cleansing Rosemary Mint Shampoo with Sea Moss for your first “lather then rinse” shampoo, and then follow it up by gently cleansing your hair with a repeat shampoo using Khoret Amen Shampoo with Sea Moss.
  3. Next, using your fingers, apply Khoret Amen Hair Smoothie from roots to ends, and comb hair to make sure it is evenly distributed (or, feel free to try our Black Vanilla Hair Smoothie). Leave it on for 15 – 30 minutes, then rinse. Experiment to see how much time you need to leave it in to create your perfect curls!
  4. As a final conditioning step, liberally spray Black Vanilla Leave-in conditioner from roots to ends.
  5. Gently dry hair using a paper towel and massage a small amount of Lisa’s Hair Elixir into the scalp. Use sparingly, as a little goes a long way.
  6. Lastly, apply our number one product: Hair Milk!, the perfect lightweight moisturizer for every hair type and texture. Squeeze about a quarter size amount into your palm and, rub your hands together to warm the product and then “scrunch” onto your hair, paying particular attention to the ends.
