Rock stars are known for their outrageous styles and outlandish outfits. Throughout decades of popular music, the landscape of fashion has been influenced by musicians flaunting their individual creativity – that’s what makes them rock stars, after all. The Beatles with their now-famous Beatle Cut, Elvis Presley’s sideburns, big hair bands from KISS to Motley Crüe, Elton John flamboyant in oversized glasses and sequined capes, Jimi Hendrix with his all-out ‘fro, Prince during his purple reign, Madonna in everything from virginal wedding dresses to cone bras, and of course, The Gloved One himself, Michael Jackson. While it may seem that Lady Gaga has the monopoly on unconventional these days, the boys from Spinal Tap first emerged from a pod in the 1984 rockumentary spoof, This Is Spinal Tap, and Björk pre-dated the raw meat dress early in the millennium with her infamous (and more off the wall”> Swan Dress at the 2001 Academy Awards.

While innovative costumes were in no short supply last night (most especially thanks to Cee Lo Green”>, the hair was the focus of our love affair. Curls were everywhere, from Grammy Award winning Best New Artist jazz bassist and multi-instrumentalist Esperanza Spalding to the original golden-voiced diva herself, Barbra Streisand. Below, our fave Trash Talker and curl stylist Anna Craig of Trashy Roots Salon & Spa offers a recap of the award show and a rundown of the hair.

Esperanza Spalding

Best New Artist Esperanza Spalding was definitely going natural with her ‘fro and we loved it!!!

Nicki Minaj

Nicki Minaj says, “Yes, this is all my hair. At night, if I press a certain button, my hair grows. First of all, it grows up, and I press another button and activate the color on it.” Mmmm hmmm.
