The Queen of Curls answers your questions
Q: I have kinky coily hair that I would like to straighten sometimes. I’m aware that all forms of heat are damaging so I am hoping that you could tell me the least damaging; flat ironing or blowing drying.
A: Blow drying is the least damaging because flat irons use a lot of pressure with heat so they cause more damage to the hair more. I suggest using a round brush with a blow dryer on medium heat.

Roller setting would be the least damaging way of loosening curls or straightening, and the results would probably last a week.

Oh! I use a blow dryer and a flat iron on my hair is that bad? I don’t want to have it so damaged that the only remedy is taking my hair scissors to it.

My hair is natural and thin maybe a 3c to 4b and when I used to have a light blow dry then flat ironed straight in Atlanta it just grew and was gorgeous. Since I’ve been un NY and getting it roller set and blow dryed its just short and wicked thin. Does not last as long either. Had the keratin once two years ago and my ends are still damaged and it made my hair fall out. It was a happy time otherwise. Any insight into what’s been going on?

Personally I have decided to avoid heat completely. I’m 3c with 4a at my hairline and have found heat to be VERY damaging to my curls, especially at my hairline and crown. I occaisionally straightened my hair (blow dry with roller brush, then flat iron) at the salon while transitioning and after bc. Now I’m in the process of growing my hair out again before cutting those stringy bits out.
