Like a fingerprint, everyone’s hair is unique. There is no one size fits all for hair care and styling products. Although the essentials to any hair care regimen include cleansing, conditioning, and moisturizing regularly, your results will vary based on how each product performs on your hair. Knowing your hair’s properties and needs can lead you exhausted into an abyss of information, but now all of that hard work has been taken care of.

My Curls Understood is the first natural hair subscription box that is curated to each individual consumer. Before ordering, you must first complete a consumer profile that asks you questions about your hair type, curl concerns, and regimen. It is also the first subscription service to guarantee 5-7 deluxe/full size products. Yep, you read that correctly. Nothing is worse than receiving a 1 oz. product when you have dense, Type 4 hair. That is enough my for edges and not much else. My Curls Understood launched their first box in November and here is what I received.

MopTop Bamboo Gentle Shampoo

This shampoo is nostalgic of the Lucas limon salt my classmates used to share in elementary school. After detangling my damp hair with a daily conditioner, I rinsed and applied the MopTop Bamboo Gentle Shampoo directly to the scalp and scrubbed. This shampoo left my hair clean and is a great option for clarifying. Although my hair did not feel stripped, I would not categorize this as a moisturizing shampoo.

Eden BodyWorks Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner

This deep conditioner is extremely thick. The more I shingled the Eden BodyWorks Jojoba Monoi Deep Conditioner throughout my 4a coils, the more defined my curls were. My low porosity strands are bipolar when it comes to coconut oil.  A lot of the products my curls respond well to contain coconut oil, but other times it has no affect on my hair. This conditioner in particular is too heavy for my strands. I do not doubt that my hair absorbed the nutrients, but my hair was left underwhelmed. This conditioner is probably better suited for a Type 4 with coarse and/or high porosity strands.

Eden BodyWorks Jojoba Monoi Hair Milk

If you do not need like refresher sprays, this hair milk is a great alternative. It is runny like your typical hair milk and it is not too heavy like a butter or moisturizer.  Traditional leave-in conditioners are formulated with proteins to help strengthen the hair, so if your hair is protein sensitive and it does not respond well to heavy moisturizers, then this product is perfect for you. I applied this product after rinsing the deep conditioner and it glided through my strands.

Curlisto Repair Styling Cream

Another lightweight product, Curlisto Repair Styling Cream feels similar to the Eden BodyWorks Jojoba Monoi Hair Milk, but is not formulated with the same amount of oils. It applies well to wet hair and says that it can also be used as a heat protectant, so I will revisit this product when I straighten my hair. This styling cream is packed with proteins, including hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed wheat starch, hydrolyzed wheat protein, which make me feel confident that I will be reducing the risk of heat damage as I blow-dry and flat iron my hair.

Hello Coily Curlicue Custard

Unfortunately, this custard did not work for me. It did not apply well, causing my fingers to snag while shingling. I’m already partial to gels, with my preference being a cream styler, so this product did not work well for me.

Overall impression

I would recommend My Curls Understood to anyone who is looking to build a regimen without rummaging through YouTube reviews for hours on end. It is also a great service for those who know their hair type and needs and enjoy trying new products regularly.
