NaturallyCurly: How did you become interested in working with curly hair?:
James McNally: I began working in the hair industry in 1996 at Devachan, which was then a small curly girl salon. I worked with curly hair five days a week, 11 hours a day and fell in love with it. In 1997 I left his home in NYC and headed off to Brazil where I began training for “pintura” with Denis DeSilva. After many years, I headed off to Mario Diab Salon in Soho. My specialty are coloring techniques that accentuate the beauty of curly hair. I find the coloring part to be really artistic.
NaturallyCurly: How do you cut curly hair?
James McNally: I cut it dry and then wet. I prefer to cut curly hair dry because it saves the length and I can see it in its natural state.
NaturallyCurly: What’s the biggest challenge of working with curls?
James McNally: Combing it out, with all the knots and tangles. Other than that, I find it easy to sculpt and accentuate the curls.
NaturallyCurly: What are the hottest curl trends?
James McNally: Sun-kissed sparkles in the front is a big trend. Many women also are going for really radical color – deep brown with platinum highlights, like Lady Gaga.
NaturallyCurly: What products do you use?
James McNally: I use Profound Beauty and Devaconcepts. If you’re looking for a good at-home deep treatment, here is my favorite. Take half a cup of mayonnaise, three egg whites and a tablespoon of olive oil. Put it on at home under a cap for a half an hour. It’s a really good conditioner.
