In Bleach two of the characters have orange hair and are made fun of and beaten because of it. I wasn't sure if different hair really could be a big deal in Asian cultures until your article. I guess that I am lucky, I am italian/german/irish. I recieved curly hair from my dad's side so he thinks that it is pretty and my mom wishes that her hair was curly.
