Come spring or summer, I can literally, wash and go. I don’t need to do much in the way of styling or twisting, I use less product and away we go!
But come winter time — it’s cold. Of course, we’re not going out the door when it’s 30 degrees with wet hair either. So what’s a curl to do? Here are some simple tips you can use for the winter months that will help keep your curl pattern, shine and bounce while bearing the chill outside.
Nighttime Prep
Once you wash and prep your hair for the evening cover it with a shower cap rather than a silk bonnet, this prevents hair from clinging and allows it to simply dry and keep the curl pattern.
If your hair isn’t dry when you wake up allow it to air dry while getting ready for work in the morning. If it is dry and there are some pieces that need to be “fixed,” simply use a spray bottle with water and conditioner mix to set them into place.

Diffuser
It can take a while to get the hang of diffusing, but once you do you won’t want to dry your hair any other way. You can use an attachment diffuser to gently dry your hair 50-60%.
Before you begin, use a good leave-in throughout your hair. Remember, the closer you work to your scalp, the tighter the curl will get. Again, it takes some practice, but it’s well worth your time and patience!

Hat and twist
This is a great little trick for curls that are a bit thicker. Spray your hair in the morning with water and conditioner mix (you can also spray water and add a leave-in afterwards). Then make larger, loose, twists with your hair (5-7 should do).
Put on a “slouchy” cap — the crocheted types work well for this. Allow your hair to dry while getting ready for your day. Once you’re done and ready, remove the cap and shake your twists out gently with your fingers.

The Scarf
Scarves can be used any time of year, but winter is of course prime time for this accessory.
Cold air can be very harsh on curls and coils, so it’s THAT cold, wrap your hair up loosely in a cotton scarf or pashmina. This will protect your hair from the elements on your way to work, and when you get there you can remove the scarf and add it to your outfit for the day! Scarves have so many uses.
