sandy freeman creator of chemo turbans

My name is Sandy and I’m the designer for Movie Star Jewelry and Itss Exclusive handmade headgear and accessories.

I always loved to sew and make crafts as child, my mother and sisters had sewing machines all over our house, and they sewed for a living. After I retired I decided to do what I love the most, making accessories.

I retired six years ago from being a teamster in the movie industry after 34 years. I was the first black woman in this local. While sitting on the set for 16 hours, I started making beautiful jewelry as a hobby, which eventually turned into a small business for me as designers and movie stars began purchasing them from me on set.

I decided to open a store on Etsy and began sewing and making all kinds of jewelry and fashion accessories. My family has truly been my inspiration and continues to be such today.

The greatest reward in owning your own business is being able to make decisions on your own regarding the hours you work, what you make, and being in control of how much money you can potentially earn.

Cancer changed my outlook

I currently have seven sewing machines and a host of jewelry supplies. I sew and make jewelry six day a week. My mother and sisters would be so proud of me, to see that I have my own business doing what we all loved doing so much. I love when my customers tell me how happy they are with my accessories.

My family members had cancer. I wish they could have worn my handmade turbans while undergoing chemo. These turbans are beautiful and allow women to keep the confidence they have while still feeling feminine and looking gorgeous despite potential hair loss. I went through chemo with my Mother, two brothers and two sisters.

If anyone is going through chemo with a loved one, I would tell them to just be there and try to understand that cancer makes them very sick. They need to be patient, loving and understanding towards them. They also need to be a shoulder to lean on and full of encouraging words.  Love them more ever and try to keep them happy during those trying time.
