Dear Ouidad:

I was debating a Curl Softening Treatment to to create loose curls with my 4b hair, similar to Corinne Bailey Rae's. Is that possible, and is the Curl Softening Treatment permanent?

Dear Seeking Softer Curls:

I would definitely recommend a softening treatment to get the look you’re looking for. But remember to work with your natural (and beautiful!) curl texture before trying any type of treatment.

However, if you do want to get loose curls, make sure you use a New York and Santa Monica Salons. The Softening Treatment is meant to gently loosen curl pattern without the harsh chemicals found in most relaxers.

If you’re just looking for an easier way to style your tight curls, try pairing a Rake & Shake technique to apply Climate Control Heat & Humidity Gel.

I think the trick is to learn how to keep the hair moisturized. 4b hair needs moisture also and water is the best moisturizer. I do believe that the problem with 4b hair is that it is porous and has a hard time keeping in moisture. At least that was my problem. If you defeat dryness hair will become more tamed and softer.
LOL @ Elaine.
I hope you all know we 4b's cannot just put water an our hair and "scrunch." It doesn't work like that.
I agree with NOT using a softener (i.e., relaxer, texturizer, etc.) to loosen your curl. I just dampen my hair with water and rake through regular leave in conditioner in sections with a Denman brush, then use a bit of shine product. It really helps to clump my curls nicely. If I start to see a little frizz, some water brings my curls back to life. So don't give up the fight. Stylists that offer treatments to semi straighten our hair are like crack dealers selling us expensive drugs to temporarily take the edge off but in reality we're hooked. Hang in there and work with what you have. Good luck.
I dont have as tight of curls as yourself... But in order for me to make my curls looser or "softer" I brush my hair with leave in or styling product and I gently scrunch with VERY saturated hair and leave it alone... and when its dry I have less tight curls. I hope it works for you.
I assume that a "Curl Softener" is some variety of relaxer. In my experience, relaxers, no matter how gentle, end up destroying the curl in kinky African American hair.
