Hey hey hey!  We are Jay & Tri from Curlture. We are from London, UK. We were both transitioning from heat damage until recently when Jay had a haircut.  We are all about self-love, empowerment and culture.

What we can say about the natural hair scene in London is; it’s a work in progress.

There are a fair amount of events, mostly during Spring/Summer and many bloggers, including ourselves, are all working to make the UK natural scene more prominent. This is a great improvement on the past, as with the US, the natural hair “movement” has only been noticeable within the last decade or so with the rise of YouTube and social media. Natural hair is becoming more a topic of conversation rather than taboo. You can see this in the hair shops too as slowly but surely natural hair products are trickling onto the shelves, though we do not get a lot of the American brands, we have some phenomenal homegrown UK brands. To restock our product junkie cupboards, we generally order online or buy from local hair shops.

Natural hair in advertisements is not uncommon…

However, it’s usually mixed women that are featured which is great, but it would be nice to see Black women being featured as frequently. We have noticed a few images or depictions of black women with natural hair in billboards, magazines etc. It’s catching on, we’ll give it some time. On another note, the natural community is being embraced more and more everyday which is just amazing to see.

Social media has really allowed people to portray natural hair in a positive light so more and more women are transitioning or even just thinking about it.

Everything begins with a thought so the fact that women are finding it easy to ignore the cream crack itch is saying something.  That said, outside of London and major cities is a different story.  You still come across women (and men”> with curly hair who feel the need to hide/change their hair, but London will be the example. Rome wasn’t build in a day, you can’t transition over night.
