At one point, all of those with tighter curls have had a TWA, which is short for "teeny weeny afro."

For most, the image of someone following the big chop (the cutting off of relaxed ends or damaged ends) is what comes to mind when they think about a TWA. But when is a TWA no longer a TWA? Simply, a TWA’s length can range from about a quarter of an inch to two inches.

Once it grows past that point, it is in medium afro territory. The fun news is that along with more length comes more styling options.

“When you have some more versatility, you don’t have a TWA anymore,” according to Jahmeela Bolade, the owner of Houston’s Strictly Roots Natural Hair salon.

“When you can braid your hair, grab it from the root and actually twist it or something, [it’s not a TWA]. You can do more with your hair,” explains Tikur Leoul, who sports a large afro.

Also, more effort has to be put forth in terms detangling sessions and overall upkeep. “Either way, it takes a lot of maintenance, because you need to take care of split ends. But it’s more work when the hair is longer,” says barber Roy Long of 3rd Ward’s Finest Kutz in Houston.

Sometimes the illusion of a TWA can be created for those with hair much longer than two inches, thanks to shrinkage. This would lead some to believe that they may have a TWA although it doesn’t appear as one when stretched with styling.

“As far as how [the hair] looks, even though it shrinks, it doesn’t diminish the amount of hair you have,” says Leoul.

I saw a girl on youtube who could stretch her hair down to her collar bone refer to herself as having a TWA. I think some people dont realize how long their hair actually is especially when their goal is to grow it down their backs.
Thanks for the article! I've finally gotten clarity on this topic. According to your definition, I no longer have a TWA; now I need to work up some styling options that prevent the major shrinkage I never seem to control.
@KinkyCurlyCoilyMe Wow, there are some talented ladies out there! Since length is kind of relative (what is long to someone may be just medium length to another person for example). So there are other factors that you can consider when defining the TWA length stage. Thanks for reading! Senora :)
Interesting.... After I read this article I asked the ladies on twitter #naturalhair what they thought about it. Most agree, that if you have 3 inches of hair then you no longer have a TWA and you now have an SA = Small Afro. A few didn't think that whether you can braid your hair or not should indicate whether you have a TWA or SA because some women can braid 2inch hair.
