Step-by-step instructions for a great new hair style!

Pineappling, developed right here on NaturallyCurly.com by our fantastic community, is the magic way to get second-day hair. It’s a very high ponytail on the top of your head to protect your curls while you sleep. The name comes from the shape of your hair if put in correctly. The idea is for only the underneath back of your hair to be disturbed while sleeping all the while protecting the length of your hair, or the mound of beautiful curls as it stays on the top of your head.

The most important thing to remember about pineapple-ing is to not tie your scrunchie too tightly. A lot of volume in the morning is a plus but a ponytail bump is not. Just slip the scrunchie around the base of the high ponytail once right before you lay down for the night. It may slip a little but your hair should still be protected. Don’t forget your satin pillowcase!

Instructions

  1. Bend over. Yes. All the way forward
  2. Gently gather hair like you’re making a ponytail on the top of your head.
  3. Secure with scrunchie/elastic. Scruchie recommended. I can use a scrunchie and not twist it around again, just slip it on. The looser the better. The intent is to have it as loose as possible (to avoid a dent in the morning) while still securing hair.
  4. Carefully straighten up. Hold the hair as you do so if it’s really loose.
  5. Separate ponytail so you have half on one side of your head, half on the other.
  6. (BONUS POINTS STEP) Add satin sleep cap.
  7. Remove scrunchie after 8 hours REM sleep. Spritz w/ H2O/condish and add product if desired. Admire pretty 2nd day curls. Rinse and repeat.

You might like to clip the ends of your pineapple to your head, or instead of leaving a ponytail, don’t pull ends all the way through to make a loose bun thing.

I’ve been doing this for years, just didn’t know there was a cute name to go with it! – Works great ;)

  2. Melanie Barrett Says:

I love this not only because it gives me great 2nd day curls, but also because it keeps me cooler at night to sleep with my hair up.

  3. sdw112 Says:

I do this all the time! I also spritz my curls with Jessicurl Aweinsprialing Spray before bed and again in the morning. Great 2nd day hair!

Pineappling? Yep, been doing it for umteen years but had no idea that there was a technical term for it!

  5. amorxoxo Says:

I didn’t know it was called “pineappling”…lol I use this technique even during the day when I am doing things that might make me sweat, it definitely protects my curls longer!

  6. curlygirl18 Says:

I do this after I wash my hair and add products, then plop, then let dry a little, then put up in a pineapple to dry overnight. When I take out the scrunchie in the morning, I have beautiful, cascading, bouncy, volume-y, curls!

  7. Jem Says:

How long does your hair have to be for this to work? Mine is just hitting my shoulders.

  8. Infinity12 Says:

I don’t understand what you’re supposed to do the next morning with the water and “condish” (is that short for “conditioner”?. I’ve been tieing my hair up for years. But the next morning I get the half-and-half result…straight from crown to neckline, curly from everything lower than my neck. Am I supposed to spritz it with water? What about the “condish”?

I have to say that I’m impressed! I’ve never tried this before, but thought I’d give it a try… My layers are not quite long enough, so it was mostly my top layers that were up in the scrunchie. When I first woke up and took it out, my hair was kinda extra “bouncy”, but it has since calmed down. I’m just going to give it a spritz of Mist-er Right and see how it goes. So far, so good – Cool!

I have the same question as Jem. My hair isn’t that long, it just tickles my shoulders. Some pieces in the back and undersides won’t stay in if tied that loosely. Should I try to pin them upo or something?

  11. plunkybug Says:

I used to pineapple, but I found it pulls out my weak curls, but I was wrapping the scrunchie. It doesn’t stay on top of my head otherwise. Now I just splay my hair over the back of my pillow til I find something better.

I cant wait to ty this tonight just bought a satin bedtime cap! also I like the comment about putting damp hair in a bun at night! way faster than letting hair airdry before bed!:)

I love “the pineapple”. I actually use this as my go to style when my hair looks crazy if I leave it down. I usually sleep with it out and I tie on a satin scarf.

  14. nina.chappel Says:

I usually just lay my hair out over the back of my pillow but It’s a bit uncomfortable since I can’t move or my curls get flattened. Does this way allow flexibility at night? Can I finally sleep like a normal person?

  15. CurlyCowgirly Says:

I can’t pineapple. My curls dent easily, even in a loose scrunchie. :( I use either a satin cap or a satin pillow depending on my hair’s mood.

  16. bakron Says:

I’ve been doing this for a while now. I nd this through self-discovery. I do use a tighter band than a scrunchie to hold my “pineapple” or pony tail. I know there is a bump to deal with. After loosening my hair and running my fingers through the curls, I simply wash my hands and shake them, then I scrunch my hair all over with my wet/damp hands. The bump isn’t that noticeable!
