In August I'm going to check out this "borrowing" method because EVOO is not cheap.

I will say the best thing are generic products, and Dr. Bronner's Peppermint soap. The soap you have to dilute it anyway, it's sulfate free, and you can add a little bit of oil to it. Suave is one of the best generics I've seen, and you can add a little bit of honey, melted shea butter, aloe vera and voila you have a great deep conditioner. I'm a type 4a, with some 4b in the crown, and I know that it's hard to keep the hair moisturized. Vitamin E has been my friend before (I'm transitioning), and it worked well mixed with shea butter. Just some helpful tips from someone who too had to be on a big budget in school.

I've managed to find just about my whole routine for under $10 - except the shampoo. My two conditioners and gel cost about $2 each, and they work great on my hair! I'm a 3b, so I needed a sulfate-free shampoo, which cost me about 7-8$.

I think cheap products are out there, you just might need to look. Of course, it's probably harder for a 4b going natural. Great article!

Congratulations on your first Naturally Curly article Evelyn.

Check out Aubrey Organics Honeysuckle Rose Conditioner from the Vitamin Shoppe for $8.32. Add a little extra virgin olive oil for a wondering deep conditioning treatment.

Great article Evelyn! I wish I had something like this when I first went natural my senior year of college. I didn't have a proper moisturizer until 6 months in after doing lots of research on forums. I remember going on an impulsive "midnight run" to Whole Foods after reading an article on exactly what I would need to keep my natural hair healthy. Thereafter, I had to learn how to budget (crunching numbers with receipts in my hand) because those products were not cheap :} Definitely give the ACV rinse a try after cleansing. It helps to seal cuticles and restore the acidic ph level to the hair. I add mine to a spritz bottle and spray sections so that it's less messy. Looking forward to more of your articles!

you might want to mention things you can "borrow" from the dinning halls if you're on a meal plan ^_^. I'm notorious for putting olive oil in those little airplane bottles and sneaking out with it! Honey and banana are a great ingredients for a homemade deep conditioner or a study snack.

Yay i'm your first comment ever! As you have learned over the past 8-ish months of being my roommate i complain about my hair all the time (usually wishing i could make it perfect with just the snap of a finger) but in the past few years i have begun to get over my whole "i wish i had straight hair like every other blonde" thing and have started to embrace the curl. Your advice is totally on the mark and i cant wait to see what new and interesting products you'll have to teach me about in the future :)
