Elizabeth Feinman, you are right, but the really sad thing is that we're having to start the hair pride thing all over again because back in the 60's & 70's WE HAD THAT HAIR PRIDE. I grew up with ML King on TV & the whole civil rights movement & the Black is beautiful era. I went to segregated schools til the 60's.I sported a HUGE
Afro like the Jackson 5 & Angela Davis had. Loads of people were into wearing afros back then. Black guys wore big 'fros & carried afro picks in their back pockets & we girls wore ours with long afro centric earrings & beads. We all wore dashikis. White kids with curly hair let theirs grow into big afros & Jewish kids
called theirs Jewfros. White girls even got perms to make their hair into big masses of curls. The full range of curly hair from type 3s to type 4s was the rage. Big hair was DA BOMB. But when the big crack epidemic of the late 80's & 90's came in, all that went down the drain as neighborhoods became crime ridden, there were drug wars,drug-shattered families, neglected/abused kids, teen mothers & all kinds of social issue messes we still deal with today. I've been teaching since the mid 70's & we teachers noted the awful changes in kids' attitudes from joyous childhood to a nasty negative view of life & a general anger at everything. Kids came to school full of anger & began to snap at each other & argue & fight over petty stupid nonsense;self esteem vanished & self respect, respect for teachers, education & any kind of authority disappeared.Parents stopped raising their kids with the values of self discipline & respect we older folks grew up with & schools became unsafe, with parents & adults coming into them assaulting each other & school staff. Fights & crime escalated among students. Self hate & shame over our hair & looks took over our communities again. Many of our men,who used to like natural sistahs started going after the light skin & "good hair" types again...as in the music videos which also became DOWNRIGHT GROSS & NASTY... & now we have to start our pride journey all over again. Even tho I still believe everyday people are the most important influences, I am grateful for the everyday women who wear naturals ,& the rise of natural hair salons & natural hair products as well as folks like India Arie,Jill Scott, Whoopi Goldberg & others who currently wear naturals. On the male side, there's a brother at my gym who proudly sports a nice full 70's style afro complete with a pick in his back pocket. I just HAD to compliment him on his style ! Those were the days!

I love being natural...I don't feel like I have to "check" myself to see if the rest of the world is buying my "assimilated" look! And I don't have to run for cover in the Rain!! If it gets wet...it gets wet and my day's not ruined. LOL!!! Let's keep it up and hope the world catches up with us!!!
Be well,

So, Tyra’s going to “ go natural” for a couple of days. Big deal. She’s in the business of looking ‘assimilated”, so, I get the unnatural hair thing (for work). But, if she’s going to do this for real, then I’m expecting to see her only wearing the weave on a gig for a photo shoot, because she’s a model and gets paid to look the way the designer wants her to look. That being said, I think the next time we see her on the Red Carpet or on her way to a BIG event or, hitting the grocery store…I want to see her sporting a serious cap of naturally grown hair ala Alek Wek! Or even braided, like she does occasionally. If she does that, then I say kudos, Ms. Banks, NOW you’re making an impact. That to me, would mean she loves what God gave her and she’d be letting all the women and girls who idolize her know, that it’s okay for them to do the same. Loving, accepting and embracing your God given beauty is the ONLY true way to be “FIERCE”!! Maybe she can be the catalyst for a whole new fashion campaign… Cornrows and Couture, “Afros and Armani” …Curls and Kors!

I look at the pictures of the women in Africa… from different tribes and the way they wear their hair… naturally. Sure they braid, bead, twist or even shave it down to peach fuzz or noting at all… but it’s still growing out of their own heads. They KNOW who they are, love who they are and it shows. That’s what we need to see here in our country and anywhere else for that matter where, course, thick, tightly curled, kinky, frizzy…healthy Natural hair is seen as unattractive or not “good”.

Yes, everyone has the right to fly his or her “freak” flag however and whenever. I’m a mixed race (African-American, Puerto Rican, Dutch, Hawaiian) woman of color and my hair type is 3b. I wear it out and wild, pretty much all the time, I’m happy with it. Still, I meet a lot of black women who say I should relax it, or ask me if it’s my real hair. …telling me that I have “good” hair…that makes me so sad. I have never asked a white woman if her hair was real, I don’t think that happens terribly often. We ask eachother because we are under the impression that only one or two textures of hair is remotely acceptable and oh so very rare. So if you see one of us with it, then it’s probably fake. They treat it like hitting the lottery, as if anything else is ugly, shameful and in desperate need of change. Then to assimilate and PRETEND you were born that way....it sucks! Hiding straightening products, so nobody knows…(sigh)
But I just hate that we have been conditioned to think that we’re only acceptably beautiful if our hair looks like Heidi Klum’s! I see how people look at them, people whose hair IS naturally like Heidi Klum’s. They smirk, giggle or look perplexed. I’m pretty sure they think that the ‘weaved”, “wigged” or process haired women think their “hair” looks…natural. It seems to me that we’re still “buying” what society is “selling”! Now, 25-30 years ago, I would have accepted that but… in this day and age, with all the access we have to the “outside” world…I would think we‘d have evolved to the point of uncovering our natural hair. We have taken our children and made them feel less than beautiful unless they have hair like Heidi Klum and Jennifer Aniston! I wish we could stop burning it with chemicals and smothering our scalps with natural and/or artificial hair, stop greasing it to within an inch of its life! Boycott society’s idea of what true beauty is and maybe then we’ll see more “Plaits and Prada” on the cover of Bazaar or Vogue.

Now, let’s get Beyonce and Whitney, Janet, Regina King, Gabrielle Union, Queen Latifah, Rhianna, Brandy and Kelly Rowland…oh hell, get anyone who’s chemically altering, “cooking” their hair or wearing wigs and weaves, to try and quit the fakery. Let’s see if they can be the pioneers in helping the rest of us love our hair! I want to see Leighton Meester running into a beauty shop to have her hair styled as close to an Afro as she possibly can…so she can pull off the latest “Alek Wek” look. (hah, that’ll be the day) When I see a woman thumping herself in the head to stop the itching from those ridiculous skullcap “pixie” wigs or over-the-top weaves, it breaks my heart. One of these days those thumps to the head may shake something loose and free them from feeling the need to try and look like something they’re not. Maybe it’ll free them into loving their own natural beauty! In the end I know that it’s not as “black and white” as I’m making it out to be and I know it takes more than just walking around with natural hair…a whole LOT more!! Still, ya gotta start somewhere.

Re: the industry seeing money in natural blackl hair care.
That's all well & good but let's hope that if & when the big companies catch on to that market
they don't put out of business or buy out companies like Kinky-curly,Qhemet Biologics,Carol's Daughter,CURLS, Ms Jessie's, Afroveda, Komaza, etc. We must continue to supposrt them. They are part of our community & produce excellent products. Tyra,Oprah & other celebs,as well as national magazines would do well to promote them also.

It is great that Tyra has decided to go natural. If the industry doesn't see the money in "Natural black hair care" they will not provide the products. They also will try to cheapen the products that we have now. If they can send a space ship to the Moon why can't we get more products to make our natural hair more manageable? Where I live there are no shops to buy or get your hair done. Why don't the schools teach this so that all salons offer this type of hair care?

I agree that in her Celebrity Lifestyle, that more is demanded of her (hair), especially being a model and tv personality. I hope that she will discover many beautiful styles to wear and that most of all the SHE will enjoy her natural curly hair and bond with it instead of hate it.
