Want more waves and thicker clumps that often come with them? Too much water may be an issue if you have type 2 wavy hair. Due to the fact that the hair is a bit finer or less dense, using too much water while applying your product could be weighing you down — literally.

For those with lots of volume and texture, applying products to soaking wet hair can help define curls and cut down on frizz. However, for wavy types, soaking wet hair and products don’t always mix well.

Here are some wavy hair care tips for applying products to your hair.

Damp Hair Application

  1. Start with wet to damp hair. Keep a spray bottle of water handy to refresh sections if you have longer locks.
  2. Gently scrunch large sections of you your hair with a microfiber towel.
  3. Apply your favorite product to your wet/damp waves. Light leave-ins (especially for winter months and dry weather”>, jellies and glazes, or light gels, work well with waves. For thicker sections, or clumps, try to apply the product(s”> by gently smoothing them into the sections of your hair — try to avoid raking or combing them through.
  4. As you apply each section, gently use a damp microfiber towel or t-shirt to scrunch hair from the bottom towards your scalp. Using this damp towel/t-shirt will help maintain the necessary moisture and form clumps or thicker sections of waves.
  5. Layer your products. As you do so, gently scrunch with your damp towel. If you find sections getting drier, simply spray them with your water bottle and continue to style in the same manner.
  6. Lastly, after applying your products, you may opt to gently diffuse your waves as well. This will help with any excess water and will also help “seal” in the clumps you’re looking for. Use duckbill clips if you want more volume at the top of your head. Finish off with a light mist of hair spray or shine spray, to keep waves looking their best.

Final Thoughts

For optimal wavy hair care, beware of adding too many products to your hair. Waves are easily weighed down by too many products, or too heavy ones! Lightweight products will work best for you so try out different mousses and be sure to use duckbill clips to make sure that the waves at your roots don’t turn straight due to gravity!
