- I have been a client of hers since before the opening of AJ Salon. I am a regular Saturday morning appointment for a blow dry. Before she came along I would usually flat iron my hair which would do the trick for the moment. Nothing compares to her blow drys. I am a manager at a Downtown Salon/Spa and STILL cannot find anyone that can do the job she does. Myself and my family always enjoy the atmosphere and friendly welcome we receive each and every time we come here. :)

- Having spent way too much time in the slums of Supercuts and other half -rate butchers, I stumbled upon AJ Salon on this site and decided to give it a try. It was definitely one of the best decisions I have ever made. I'm a guy with curly, frizzy hair and had no idea how to work with it which resulted in me shaving my head for years. Marlene was able to give me the most in-depth consultation about ideas and avenues we could go down in creating a haircut that suited me perfectly. She explained everything she was doing thoroughly and she was able to effectively deal with my frizz prone hair. Her and her husband run a great salon that is top notch in quality and vision.

- AJ Salon, run by Marlene and her husband, is the best thing that's happened to my extremely curly hair in easily the last 10 years. Marlene cut my hair 2 weeks ago, and it's all I've wanted to talk about since. She is not only an expert with very curly hair, but she's also incredibly attuned to her client's preferences, desires, and feelings about their hair. She listened when I explained what I had in mind, and didn't once pressure me towards a high-maintenance style that I would never be able to keep up. I also had the pleasure of seeing Marlene work with a young client with beautifully long 3c hair almost identical in curliness to my own. While this client wanted her hair straightened and I wanted a cut that would maximize my curls, Marlene treated us both with the same respect and care, never once imposing her own or others preferences on either of us. I *highly* recommend AJ Salon for an awesome, affordable haircut!

- OMG, if you have curly hair you should move to Chicago just to use this salon and work with Marlene!!! My daughter is 12, with very long, thick and 3C tightly curled hair. She has lived her life in braids. It was time to take the next step and see what our options were as my daughter was getting depressed about her challenging hair. I was nervous about who to trust, but read so many good reviews about this shop. We were scheduled for a consult and end trim. Marlene and her husband were SO uncommonly warm, caring and friendly! They were so tuned in to even see that Liz was miserable, and wanted to make sure she was happy by the time she left their shop. Marlene ended up spending over 3 hours with Liz, and did an unscheduled blow out and flat iron for her. She told us about keratin treatment, which will soften her curls without nasty chemicals, which they won't use on a child anyway. The whole shop had a feeling of family and I definately trust her with my daughters hair, we're so lucky. Its a lovely shop, and her prices are very reasonable. Best indication is that my formally sour faced, normally reserved pre-teen daughter ran up and hugged both Marlene and her hubby. Ten stars.

- I headed over to AJ salon after reading nothing but positive reviews on how Marlene handles curly hair. I have long, curly, dried out hair and every single time that I have gone to a salon I've been disappointed. This was the FIRST time that I have left a salon COMPLETELY satisfied with my haircut. Marlene takes her time to make sure that you are comfortable and cuts your hair how YOU want it cut!! It was a great experience and I will be going back there everytime I want to get my hair done. To top it off, the services are affordable and since it was raining on the day that I went Marlene's husband gave me a ride home so that my hair style would not get ruined! They are the nicest, most genuine people! I HIGHLY recommend trying out this salon, ESPECIALLY if you have curly hair!!

- I found this salon based on this site. I had never had someone who was known for curly hair do my hair so I thought why not! First of all, Marlene and her husband are SO NICE! They make you feel right at home and great conversation. The haircut was awesome, made the curls in the back really bounce up! I then decided to have her try out my color. My hair is VERY hard to color. I go from dark to very light. I have NEVER had anyone do it correctly the first time. I warned Marlene that the first time everyone messes it up. Well guess what? She didn't! It looks great! All I can say is I am very happy! I almost don't want to post reviews on here because I want to be able to get an appointment, because once everyone finds out how great she is she will be booked solid!!!

- Well I went into to see Marlene based on reviews I saw on this website, and I must say that I am super impressed! Since the moment I entered the salon, I was excited. The decor was beautiful and Marlene and her husband were super nice. They offered me coffee, and I was extremely pleased when Marlene asked me about what I actually wanted from my hair as opposed to just cutting my hair, and she actually listened. I told her I didn't want it cut to much off the ends(seeing as I'm trying to grow it out longer) and she didn't leave me a fish tail! Every other salon I have gone to has been a nightmare when I wanted to get my hair layered, but I am just happy that I found someone who knows what I want and isn't too proud to ask what I prefer rather then just assume. I will definately go back and get my hair cut with her from now on. I'm glad to just have someone on my curly side :)

- I followed the previous reviews advice and visited AJ Salon. Marlene was just as great as the reviews claimed. She is Amazing with curly hair!! I love my color and the cut is so fun. Lots of volume without being too big, which my curly hair often tries to be. Plus, she is the first hair stylist who was actually able to style my curly hair after she was finished. Normally I walk out with a frizzy mass, or have to ask them to blow it out. With Marlene, neither happened. I can't wait to try the styling technique she used myself!! It's such a relief to find someone who can cater to people who don't have stick straight hair! I love, love my new dark curls and she is affordable!! Sounds too good to be true, but trust me it isn't! I'm hooked.

- Marlene is the best curly hair stylist specialist ever! I just got a haircut at AJ salon yesterday and I am so happy with it. I have long, curly locks that have been poorly cut so many times I had given up hope, but I'm back, baby! Marlene knows curly hair, and she really listens to what you want. The only negative for me is the salon is kind of a long haul from downtown, but if you're near Addison blue line it's no problem. I will definitely be continuing with Marlene from here on in. I am so happy with my cut!!! And it didn't break the bank; only $40 for a great cut and style - deal!! P.S. She mentioned she cuts men's hair for some ridiculous price like $12 or something, so I am bringing my boyfriend with me next time too!

- Hi Fellow Curly Chicago Girls. I just moved here from Philly, and as always, I am looking for someone to cut my very thick, curly hair. In addition to a cut, I also wanted to try out curly bangs for the first time ever! Marlene was awesome! She took the time to talk to me & meet me before my appointment to talk about her technique. She did an amazing job and my bangs look amazing. If you have curly hair and live in Chicago, AJ Salon is the ONLY place to go :)

- To all the curly haired divas in Chicago! You know when you are in a dilemma of wanting a haircut and not knowing who you can trust with your curly locks? Well, I discovered Marlene's salon! Believe me, I am the biggest skeptic and the most finicky when it comes to, not only my curly hair but also my daughter's curly hair, and who is allowed to even touch it!! Marlene did an outstanding job on all our haircuts, and I am not getting my hair colored while writing this review :)!! Got curly hair? Then you have to try Marlene!

- I just had the Keratin treatment done on 08/28. I love it!! I waited out the 3 days until I could wash it. After washing my hair it still has natural curls, but it took less time to blow dry it. It left my hair looking healthier, smoother and without frizziness. I have a lot of really thick, curly hair. I recommend this treatment to everyone that has curly hair and lots of frizz!! Marlene and her husband are so sweet; they made me feel very comfortable!!

- I also visited the salon because of the reviews and because of the reasonable price, and I am so glad I did! I got the best haircut I have gotten in years, and Marlena was helpful in giving me style tips for home. I've just washed and restyled my hair after the cut on Friday and I it still looks great. She's a curly herself so she knows techniques and products as she uses them for herself as well. Marlena and her husband are so kind and personable. They own the salon. It is small but very nice, clean and bright. I really hope others will discover this gem.

- This was my first time at the salon after reading the first reviewer's review. I have wavy/curly hair and its hard to find a stylist that can cutmyhair right and listens to what I say. Marlene was great and did exactly what I said I wanted (it was just a trim) however I've gone in for trims before and they chop my hair. She was very nice and welcoming and so was her husband. Mucho Gracias, Marlene!

- Wow! I just had my 2nd Thermal Reconditioning (Japanese Straightening) treatment with Marlene and I am so in awe of her talent! She was formally with Delle Amiche (a Gold Coast Salon) and now has opened her own very trendy salon at 3443 N. Milwaukee Ave. in Chicago. So nice to have "Gold Coast" talent without the "Gold Coast" price tag! My 1st treatment was 4/4/08 and I was able to wait 7 months for my 2nd treatment. My hair is so straight and beautiful. This past summer was my best summer ever because I didn't have to deal with the humidity. I will follow her anywhere! Thanks, Olga Marlene!
