Teresa Callen has honed her skills with curly and wavy hair over the past 30 years. She cuts and colors in a fashion that works with the hair instead of against it. She doesn't blowdry or chemically relax curls and kinks.

Callen is a Curl Care Consultant for Devaconcepts.

After a year each of private training, Image Arts Salon is happy to announce two new associates that specialize in naturally curly and wavy hair. In addition, we now have a smoothing specialist who can help you smooth your curls and waves.

Image Arts now carries DevaCurl, Image Arts signature formulation, and Intelligent Nutrients.

"I can do a lot of different types of hair, but I like staying with what I'm really passionate about and good at," Callen says. "When I see someone in a crowd with curly or wavy hair, I always think it's the most beautiful."

Callen works at Image Arts Salon close to the heart of Menlo Park. The down-to-earth salon is a curl friendly environment that attracts a diverse clientele from around the Bay Area.

I had a horrible but today with Teresa. I just moved up here from Orange County and had a fabulous DevaCurl stylist. this salon is listed as a DevaSalon.....well it ain't! She had nothing nice to say about Deva products...and yes she did cut my hair dry but that DOES NOT make you a DEVA STYLIST!!!! She used her own line or product which left my hair frizzy and sticky. She did not style it in any way using the Deva principles....which work for my hair and why I was looking for anothe Deva salon. Above all else the cut is horrible and now I have to wait for it to grow out. Wish I never went!

Teresa is amazing. I have had terrible luck finding someone who doesn't butcher my 3b curls and tried places all over the bay area (and sadly, I got bad haircuts from several places/stylists that were recommended on this website). But Teresa REALLY, TRULY knows curly hair, and gives fabulous haircuts. I consider her prices a little on the expensive side, but it is worth every penny to have a haircut you love! I moved back to Oregon almost three years ago, but I am seriously debating flying back to CA for a haircut from Teresa because I can't find anyone here who even comes close to her talent.

You know what I love? When you go to the salon, you walk out looking fabulous and THEN, you can successfully replicate the look at home. YES! I've struggled for years with my wavy/curly hair. But Teresa made it look the way I always knew and hoped it could look! I am thrilled!!! Teresa Callen is a true hair artist. She has a clear understanding of how hair works and she will listen to you carefully to understand what you are seeking. I also like that she will put her own suggestions out there--she has an opinion of what can be done with your hair to make it more flattering to your face shape and features. At the same time, she listens carefully to what you want and what is important to you. When I walked in, I didn't know what I wanted exactly, just that I wasn't liking what my hair was doing--I showed Teresa the parts of my hair that were weighed down and flat-looking (on top) and showed her the parts of my hair that I loved (underneath!). I also wanted her to please do something to fix the terrible back part of my hair. She suggested layers. (!) I was nervous about that idea, and expressed my reservations (I still wanted to be able to put it back in a ponytail without having to use 8 million barettes). She really listened to me, and I could tell that if I had vetoed the idea, she would've come up with an alternative plan. Teresa explained and showed me how I would still be able to put it back in a ponytail, but that layers would get my hair out of my face, which was a strong selling point! I said to myself--trust! She is obviously confident and experienced, and she clearly knows what she's talking about! WOW! I am so glad I took the risk and just put myself in her capable hands. My hair turned out amazing! I couldn't stop touching it in disbelief and pride!!! Teresa lightened it all up so that my hair now has body and texture. She brought out my curls and took my hair away from my face in a way that really brought out my eyes--she said they were my best feature. (Blush!) And she even made the back look pretty! I thought that was impossible?!? Then she said "this look is more true to your personality." You know something? She is right. She also gave me a lot of suggestions and showed me how I could do various styling options--putting it up, half back, for going out on the town, and for work. This is definitely the BEST haircut I've EVER had. I LOVE IT! I will be going back to Teresa and Image Arts for SURE. Oh, did I mention the scalp massage that came with the washing? Oh...wow! So nice, so relaxing. They give you tea and magazines too! It felt like a day at the spa. I was so taken care of. So so so nice. So mellow. I want to go back there right now! YAY!

This little gem of a salon is nestled in the quaint city of Menlo Park; they conveniently have a parking right next door and there is a parking lot across the street. Once you enter, you immediately feel as though it is a curly girls safe haven. Everyone is warm and polite, and embracing of all textures of curly hair. When I met with Teresa, we first sat down to chat. I brought her a picture of what I was looking for, and she thought with some adjustments the haircut will be suitable. We talked about natural products, my hair regimen, and what I was looking for in a haircut. It is quite evident that she has years of experience with natural hair and she is really an amazing artist that not only listens well, but cuts, shapes, defines curls into a beautiful masterpiece. She is trained in the Deva method, so curly hair is cut dry. I've gotten my hair cut in several reputable curly hair salons, and this is by far the absolute best haircut I've received. The shape is fabulous, and it compliments my features very well. The hair products that they use are natural, vegan, and safe for the environment. I received a wash, condition and curly set with Intelligent Nutrients line and am highly pleased. Overall, it was a great experience and I look forward to going back.

I have just recently embraced the idea of working with my curls instead of against them and I think Lynette was a GREAT way to kick that off. For as long as I can remember I have been stuck with hair cutters who can't relate to what I have to deal with, but not only is this salon welcoming but Lynette (and Teresa too) is great! She spend time playing with my hair, running her hands through it, basically getting to know it. She got the feeling for how it worked and then actually LISTENED to what I wanted and helped me decide what would look best on me. I am most definitely going again and lets just say, i'm spoiled for anyone else.

I finally found someone who listens to what I ask for. I had my hair colored and cute by Lynnette a few weeks ago, she was amazing on how she applied her coloring techniques, She actually listened to me, I couldn’t be more pleased with the results, the high lights look so natural and the cut just enhanced the great high lights. Another plus is, the color is still as vibrate as the day she colored my hair.

I love my new cut and color. I have struggled with my hair for years and I finally got a cut that is manageable without a lot of effort. I have had a lot of consultations where in the end the stylist just does what they want. Lynette listened and explained the entire process from cut to color. I highly recommend trying out Lynette's service. I am now a regular customer!

I have found the best hair stylist of my life: Teresa Callen. Teresa has been styling my hair for five years now, and I would not think of going anywhere else. Teresa is an artist whose medium is the hair and face. She is gifted at choosing a hairstyle that works best for the shape of your head and face. She also introduced me to the hair products I now use (Deva), which really make my curls look their best. I am quite the perfectionist, and it is nice that Teresa is even more demanding than I am.

She has such an obvious gift that it's difficult to imagine her doing anything else. She is also extremely thorough and takes tremendous pride in her work. Plus she is very personable, so hair appointments are always something I look forward to. Highly recommended.

I am a male who has lost much of my curly hair. I generally have given up on trying to style my hair as I had come to the conclusion that not much could be done with it anymore. Teresa was able to change this view by doing a fantastic job on a haircut. I'm not sure what she did, but whatever it was, I am impressed!

Not a great listener. I had high hopes for my first curly-haired expert stylist cut, but I was profoundly disappointed. Teresa is undoubtedly a great technician: she knows curly hair and how to cut it. Be sure that her aesthetic is the same as yours, though, as she is committed to her own sense of style above all else. In my experience, she wasn't able to respect my description of what I wanted, and I left with a haircut that was way shorter than what I described, with a style that would better suit someone twenty years older than I am. Six months later, and my hair is finally recognizable to me again!

I'm not sure what I thought of this salon. I really liked how Teresa took her time and talked with me about my curls and exactly what she was going to do. But once she started cutting, she was very rushed and didn't even have time to wash my hair and re look at it when it was styled!! I was not happy about this. She still made me pay full price and when I left the salon my hair was a mess!!! It looks okay now, but it isn't as much of a change as I had hoped for.

The first time I met with Teresa she suggested that I grow my hair longer, but I told her I never could because it just became a big ball of wild hair. I've taken her advice and her hair cuts, and slowly my hair is getting longer and longer. And the best part? It doesn't look like a giant ball of frizz! She does great cuts, but one shouldn't stop there because she's an expert at color. She's added a lot of depth to my hair color. I get so many more complements on my hair than I ever did before. Teresa recommends Deva products and those are working really well for me. If you're frustrated with your hair make an appointment TODAY. You won't be sorry. If you like her though, be sure to schedule all your appointments well in advance.

I brought my 13 year old son to see Teresa, 5 years ago. He has tight corkscrew curls and we fought them for ages. I found the Curly girl book at the library and learned more about his hair and the difference a good cut could make. I found Teresa's bio on this site and made an appointment for him. Teresa has an AMAZING rapport with people - but becuase she has two teenagers herself, she was absolutely amazing with my son. She absolutely transformed his relationship he has with his hair. He learned how to take care of it, how far he could go with it, etc. He ended up letting it grow for three years into a 10 inch afro -- which was amazing! and now he is cutting it super short, which is perfect. The bottom line is that he doesn't hate his hair. Isn't that the best gift? I had to see Teresa myself, even though I only have wavy hair. I thought if she could do that for him, I wanted her to do that for me too! I have been seeing Teresa for the last 5 years and have helped transform at least 4 of my friends lives becuase of the knowledge Teresa has given me about product, experimenting, etc.

Teresa gives me undivided attention with my difficult to manage hair. I have discovered a lower maintenance process with better results that suits my lifestyle. I love my hair! I can now walk into a board meeting or facilitate a meeting with a new confidence. Teresa also gave me the gift of learning how to feel beautiful with a make up lesson. She taught me how to apply make up to enhance my natural look that got results! I left the lesson after she applied make up and heads turned in the restaurant I entered.

After reading the reviews here and also getting good personal recommendations from the curlies on the boards, I decided to go see Teresa. She did a wonderful job on my 3b/c hair and helped me find my curls again, and lose the poof I was getting from bad layers. She cut it dry as she is a Deva-trained stylist. She really took her time and sculpted my curls like an artist. This is the same Teresa Callen from previous Opus Salon reviews, she recently moved to Textures. I will have to be honest and say I didn't *love* the way she styled my hair, but that's the same with every stylist I've been to. It's been two weeks and I'm loving the cut more every day! Expensive but worth it, since I don't need to return for 3-6 months.

Teresa's cuts grow out better than other cuts I've had in the last four years. I've tried a woman in Southern California and one in San Francisco. I also like how honest she is about products.
