- Marni is amazing! First of all, she is very knowledgeable about curly hair and about deva cuts. She knows how to select the correct cut style and length for the individual person. Beyond that Marni is an incredibly nice person. She goes out of her way to accomodate her customers and makes sure to give each customer a cut with which she is happy. The salon is also very nice - I am a working mom, and I feel like going to salon spargo is like going on a little 1-hour long vacation.

Beleive it or not, every hair dresser does not know how to cut curly hair especially kinky curly. Anyway I loved my experience. Marni wonderful specialist cut my hair turned out beautiful my curls last much longer between washing with out the frizz. I recommend her bar none to cut your african american kinky curly hair. Very patient just show her a picture of what u want or dont want. I think u get a discount if u mention the website.

- Received my first Deva cut about 2 months ago. Lets just say I was not impressed. The salon was nice, clean no problems there. Marni was pleasant, but not overly friendly as everyone says she is. First off as soon as she took me to her chair, she looked me straight in the face and said "why are you here?" I told her I read great reviews on her and the Deva cut so I wanted to give it a try. she looked my hair over, trimmed, spoke few words, cleansed, few words again, I tried to make small talk, how long has she been doing this, your hair looks great etc....and you get the picture. By the end of it, the topper, was she couldn't even walk me up to the front desk to check out, little put back by that. All and all, I experienced Marni and I will look for someone who wants to cut my hair.

- I just had my first visit with Marni today and I am more than pleased. Not only is she very nice but she is also extremely knowledgeable on how to take care of curly hair. I am a black woman with 3C hair and I have been transitioning from a relaxer to natural for about a year and half. I was very disappointed with my last hairstylist who I have been going to for about a year. She encourages black women to go natural but doesn't know how to cut curly hair and she doesn't recommend products to help with transitioning. Marni was the complete opposite. She informed me of every product that she used on me. She also showed me how much she was using of each product and how to use each product effectively. I also liked the haircut she gave me. Needless to say, I was very impressed and will return at her suggestion in about 4 to 6 months for a trim. :o)

- I am writing this review 6 months later. I have contemplated whether or not to write a review. Marni was a sweetheart. We agreed on a cut (which meant shorter). Although I did not say anything when I left the salon, I was not happy with the styling of my hair or the cut. But, I usually can style my hair better than a stylist who has cut/styled my hair. I think that is pretty normal, as we know our hair the best. Well, I don't disagree with any of the reviews here. I don't think that all the people who have left comments here didn't have a wonderful haircut with Marni, but I however didn't. It has been 6 months since my cut, and it is the worst my hair has every grown out. It was so incredibly uneven..... I can't even explain how horribly it has grown out. It looked like my hair was hacked into it as it started to grow. After visiting my regular stylist, I have to agree with her on what may have happened. It appears that the bottom layer of my hair (near the nape of my neck) the part that curls the most was cut shorter than the top layer. I was so frustrated with it that just recently I visited my regular stylist and she had to cut 4-5 inches off to get it to look even and had to give me a blunt cut. I wanted to cry, but I think it just had to be done to get it to look normal. I will not be getting another Deva cut. I have been scared off.

- What can I say that hasn't already been said? I would do a little reading on the Deva style of cutting before you go, just so you know what to expect. While I did purchase styling products at the end, it's only because Marni took the time to show me how to use it and because my hair looked amazing. I appreciate that she wrote down the styling steps we discussed over the course of the cut. This is by far the best haircut I have ever had. Make sure to mention you heard about her on this website for a new customer discount.

- Marni cut my hair for the first time a little over two weeks ago. She did an amazing job with the cut and providing excellent advice on styling tips and product. Almost two weeks later, I still love it. I was in need of an updated style, and knew from the reviews on this site, as welll as Marni's commitment to CG methods, she was the stylist for me. I was afraid that if I found the wrong hair stylist that going shorter and seeking some shape, I would end up with a round poodle 'do of my youth. I was not disappointed with Marni, however, and in fact nodded in approval as she snipped away. The hair style is very contemporary, and works very well with my daily routine (which has also been improved due to Marni's advise).

- I wanted to rave about my recent experience with Marni at Salon Spargo! I had my African-American 3C curls trimmed and styled by her recently and she is great! Not only did she listen to me and give me what I wanted, but she used a combo of products (Deva and Curl Keeper) on my hair and gave me excellent results. I no longer have George Washington shaped hair and I wasn't pressured to buy products. Best of all, I received a great discount for mentioning I found her on NC.com and was out of there in an hour. She will be seeing me for my next trim.

- I've had a deva curl cut before and I was happy with the results. The curls looked so healthy and bouncy, even though the cut is meant to be worn curly. So my expectations were high and Marni did not disappoint me. The appointment started early, she was very pleasant and professional. Marni proved to be very knowledgeable about curly hair, styling products, and provided useful resources. She was also open to other styling methods and products. Her own hair is curly and beautifully cut, so I knew I was going to have a great outcome. I cut over 6 inches off and I loved curls and the style. Since then I have gotten many compliments. I highly recommend her to anyone with curly hair!

- It has been a week since I went to see Marni and my cut is AMAZING!!! I was able to get in to see her quickly and didnt have to wait to see here at the salon. She is very knowledgeable about curly hair and explained everything as she was doing it. I decided to also give the Devacurl products a try and I am in love with them too. I have cleansed my hair once since I got it cut and then just condition on the other days. My hair looks so healthly and the curl stays all day. I have never had a cut that I liked and have often left crying or went to style it the next day and could never get it right. The cut Marni gave me is great. It looks great everyday and its easy to style...just scrunch and let it air dry. The day after I went to Salon Spargo I almost cried...but this time because I loved my hair. I have never been able to say that but now I can....I LOVE MY CURLY HAIR!!!! If you live anywhere in the area go see Marni!!! She is well worth the money and the trip. I will be going back for sure!!!!

She took the time to explain my hair type to me and what products would work best with my curls. Marni is truly a testimony to the fact that great stylists have no color. Although Marni is caucasian and I am african-american she did a fabulous job on my hair and knows a lot about dealing with all types of hair. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a natural hair stylist as she is also Deva certified. I will definitely be going to see her again soon!

- I made an appointment with Marni in December, based on reviews I read here. I'd just had a horrible hair cut and I wanted to get it fixed before the holidays. I walked into Salon Spargo and saw a lady with beautiful curls at the front desk. I thought, I am in the right place. It turned out the curly lady was Marni! She "fixed" my hair by cutting some of the curls shorter in a way that they would intertwine with the longer curls, so I would not have a layered look, and my hair looked tons better. She explained everything she did, and gave me a cheat sheet. She did not pressure me to buy any products from her. My hair still looks great and I have had many compliments on it. I trust Marni and will go back to her again.

The salon is lovely and the staff were all very warm and friendly. Marni was easy to talk to and seemed to truly enjoy her job. Here is a woman who loves and understands curls! I think perhaps some of the bad reviewers here either didn't know what to ask for or didn't follow instructions properly. I can't imagine why else anyone would not be ecstatic about their Marni cut. Did I mention that she gave me a discounted rate of $45 for being referred to her through this website? What a deal! Even her normal $60 price is worth every penny. Did I also mention that it was my birthday? Thanks Marni for the best birthday gift a girl could ask for!!!

- I am in utter, jaw-dropping SHOCK over some of the negative reviews! Just like complete awe! I am, PROUDLY, one that drives OVER an hour for this cut. I'm sorry, but in my experience, once you experience it, it is VERY difficult to go back to the "straight-line" cut every other salon gives you. It doesn't matter WHO you go to, IMO...if it is that straight-line thing, the cut isn't tailored to YOU and YOUR HAIR and what your HAIR wants to do. That person is cutting it as if it were all the same. Man, I WISH my hair was the same all over. My first time with her, I got the complete education on this entire thing...and I tell ya, I thought I knew all there was to know! Man, was I WRONG. SO, the education was just completely eye-opening. I NEVER looked back! She analyzed the stuff I brought in (ingredients), typed my hair, answered every question I had...took the TIME WITH ME. NEVER ONCE did Marni push a product on me. She told me what she was using, but she never...EVER pushed for a sale. EVER. I am in awe that someone actually thought she did. Most of the time, when my hair starts outgrowing a cut, I might as well hang it up (top-heavy, etc), but with this one, it STILL holds its shape. It's CRAZY! I went back to the person that cut my hair before (locally) because of the drive, and after that, I just came to realize, there IS no comparison once you know the difference. It isn't about just cutting anywhere, randomly "having at it" as someone kind of put it in another review....it's about doing what YOUR HAIR wants to do and no, someone untrained could NEVER "follow" the cut to give you the same thing. It's NOT a straight cut! I never looked like "plastic". I never had "crunch" because once your hair dries, you CRUNCH IT OUT. DUH! And with many other experiences many of us have had, you may not like the way someone who cut it "styles" it, but the cut can be just amazing. So you go home and do it YOUR way..it's happened to all of us so I know everyone knows what I am talking about. I am not looking back. I will drive the 1.5 hours and deal with traffic from total H*** for this. The hair BEHAVES. The hair is HAPPY. The hair KEEPS its shape growing out. Marni is my hero. I have been shown the way :)

- The Marni show!! Well, I read the above recommendations and as a curly girl I know how exciting is that someone finally understands your curly "special needs" ... but what I have experienced in Spargo was nothing but an average haircut and as far as I see it Marni is no more than a good marketer that knows what her market needs to hear. Honestly, paying 60$ for mainly products demonstration is ridiculous. Especially when those are the products that she sells. She recommended me buying not less then 6(!!) "very essential" products. And by the way you can forget returning anything back. When I wanted to return one of the products I bought I got a big NO (doesn't matter I didn't open it or that I payed them more then 150$ a day before..). Do yourself a big favor and enter www.frizzoff.com which is the website of the products they sell. You can find 'how to' videos and tips that are EXACTLY what Marni is showing in her show...

She's really excited about working with curly hair (her own is gorgeous!) and continuously works to enhance her professional education and skills. She understands curls like no other stylist I have met, and I have seen many. After seeing the client before me leave with an amazing cut and style I was extremely excited to have my turn in her chair. She understands how curls need to be cut so you don't end up with one of those awful poodle cuts or one of those sharp obnoxious ledges in the back of your head. When she first used the product I was a bit concerned that it would be wet looking and ridged but after she is done and I got home and completely scrunched out my hair like she instructed it was amazing. I managed to get three days out of it!!!! It is so easy to follow at home too. The cut works well whether I keep it curly or decide to wear it strait. You are crazy if you live in the area and don't see Marni at least once. The salon has one of the best atmospheres I have seen. I can not say enough good things about my experience. - Devash Hair Cut The Devash Hair Cut is not “Natural” in ANY WAY. I went to this stylist based on these reviews. I hope in the future, if a curly girl likes her hair to look like fake, plastic curls, likes her hair to feel stiff and crunchy with tons of gunk in it and they like it to STINK for over 24 hours AFTER they washed it, they should be kind and say so. I am 51 yrs old. I have curly hair (3a-3b) I was lucky to have good stylists most of my life until the past 5 years when they have retired. I have never had a problem styling my curly hair, as long as it is cut correctly. “Salon Spargo” is a nice place. The gentleman that books appointments is the nicest and most helpful person that I have ever had the pleasure to speak with when calling a hair salon and I’ve called a lot of hair salons. I had an appointment with Marni at Salon Spargo, on Northwestern Hwy, in Farmington Hills, MI on Friday, April 2, 2010. Marni is polite and seems to be very knowledgeable about the Devachan cut. Marni spent a great deal of time with me explaining what she was doing. Marni also told me what product she was using and even provided guidelines and product recommendations to take home with me. If you do not know how to take care of, or style, your curly hair, I highly recommend that you see Marni. However, you should be warned that, if you choose the Deva cut, you will be forced into using a ton of gel in your hair, every day and you need to like your hair to look FAKE, as if you are wearing clip-on, PLASTIC curls. Further, if you want to wear your hair straight, forget it. You will NOT be able to blow-it out straight so it looks good. If you want to wear it curly without gel, forget it. You can’t do that either. Marni told me that I could still blow-it out. She didn’t tell me that it would look bad when I did or I would have left. The Deva cut is the WORST cut I have ever had. The only reason that this cut “works” is because curly hair is very forgiving when you wear it curly with enough product. I blew it out today and what a joke. I can’t even go out. I cannot believe how bad this looks. I am going to have to find a stylist Monday and try to get them to fix this mess. Even the worst stylist that I have ever been to, has NEVER made my hair look this bad. I told Marni that I wanted the option of wearing my hair “curly” or “straight.” The Deva cut cannot be worn straight. I also told her that the biggest problem I have is stylists that insist on cutting the top layers of hair the same length, or SHORTER than, the hair that lies below. If the stylist does not understand that the top layer of hair growing shrinks and it needs to be cut longer than the lower layers, you will end-up with a pyramid. Marni assured me that she understood the “pyramid” problem. I could not have been clearer about NOT wanting to have the hair that grows from the top layer of my head cut shorter than the rest of my hair. I did agree to a few, face framing cuts. I even brought pictures of my various states of hair distress. Also, I showed Marni pictures and, we discussed the common “rat-tail” problem. I Still HAVE A TON OF THEM. I cannot believe what a mess my hair is. I cannot believe that anyone could make it look this bad. I can’t believe how uneven it is in the back. IT LOOKS HACKED. It’s going to take another six months to grow this mess out of my hair. I am extremely upset. The TRIANGLE has gotten WORSE. As far as I’m concerned, if you want a Deva cut, get a pair of scissors and go at it like a psycho ‘cause that’s what you will end-up looking like, unless, of course, as I said before, you want to put a ton of gel in your hair every day and look as if you are wearing clip-on, PLASTIC curls. I went out after my appointment and could not wait to get home and wash the gunk out of my hair. Unfortunately, one of the products still STINKS and it is more than 24 hours later. Gross. Marni used “Curl Keeper” gel which I do not like. Curl Keeper also contains DMDM Hydantoin which is a very toxic ingredient. A 9 out of 10 Hazard rating from the Environmental Working Group site, Skin Deep. I’ll take silicone over DMDM Hydantoin any day. If you want real answers about the ingredients in products that you use, I suggest that you go to the following websites: http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ingredient/702196/DMDM_HYDANTOIN/ - Known human immune system toxicant - Human skin toxicant - strong evidence Dimethicone only has a 3 out 10 hazard rating so everyone telling you how “bad” silicones are not correct. Are these people chemists? NO. But, the following may be: http://thebeautybrains.com/2007/02/16/does-silicone-suffocate-hair/ REASONS WHY SILICONE CAN’T SUFFOCATE HAIR: 1) Even if you didn’t wash all the silicone out, we’ve never seen any data that indicates that a small amount of silicone residue acts as a “barrier” between hair shaft and moisture. On average, your hair contains about 8 to 14% water by weight but it will equilibrate to the ambient humidity. In other words, it will pick up moisture when it’s very humid and it will lose moisture when it’s very dry. Slight silicone residue won’t substantially change that. Now, if you slather on a heavy layer of a silicone hair treatment product, that’s a different story! 2) Even though your hair absorbs moisture from the environment, its state of dryness isn’t completely controlled by this external water. Dryness is more a function of how damaged your hair is and how much natural lipids it contains. 3) Even if you did block your hair from absorbing moisture, the silicone would act like a moisturizing agent because it would plasticize and lubricate your hair. It would essentially fight the effects of dryness. If you use a silicone containing product and you like the way it makes your hair look and feel, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT! Don’t feel guilty because some people tell you that it’s bad for your hair. Oil products like Ojon can work too if you don’t want to use silicone. (Personally, I style my hair curly using Bed Head, Head Shrink Gel (green gel) mixed with a tiny bit of 100% Dessert Essence Jojoba oil and a tiny bit of water. The Bed Head smells terrific and the hair is soft. The Bed Head also conditions the hair and it stays soft even after you wash it and no build-up.) For those of you that like fake-looking curly hair that smells bad, feels stiff and looks like plastic, good for you. I don't.

She would smooth it out and she would have products to make my curls more in control!! I always loved what she did and just recently I started wanting to wear it curly. It was just to much time to blow and I needed a change. She told me that she had started using a product called CURL KEEPER!!!! WHOOOO HOOOO!!! IT IS MY NEW BEST CURL FRIEND!!!!!! by the way my haircut has always been the best curly cut and her color that she gives me has always been SENSATIONAL!!! THANKS CLAUDIA AND THANKS FOR THE NEW CURL KEEPER. I LOVE IT!!! Also Salon Spargo is one of the most beautiful and comfortable salons I have been to!!

- I have tried a bunch of salons and products and have never been very happy with the results for my 3B curly hair. I found this website, and the rave reviews of Salon Spargo and the stylist Marnie. So I thought I would give it a shot. Wow am I pleased! Marnie introduced me to new products & new curly hair techniques, and my hair is looking fabulous. She also left me with detailed instruction on how to achieve the same results at home! I have never been to a stylist that is so knowledgeable about curls. I really recommend her & Spargo if you need some curl help.

- I just had my hair cut by Marni: the haircut is fabulous, and the whole salon experience was wonderful! I had avoided getting my hair cut for much too long because of some bad experiences, but Marni has divine curls herself and a nice personality to boot, and I felt immediately comfortable with her. I would highly recommend Marni, as she took the time to go through curl by curl and really understand how my hair works, first dry cutting individual curls, then washing/conditioning with DevaCurl products, and finally touching up the cut and styling with DC and Curl Keeper. She used more product than I've ever used in styling, but it really worked, and I left with loads of beautiful, defined, ringlet-y curls (which looked great the second day, too!). Throughout the experience Marni also taught me a lot about products and techniques with which I was unfamiliar, but which are completely doable at home. My hair has never looked this better, and I would highly recommend Marni and Salon Spargo!

- I just recently went with my friend last Saturday while she was getting her hair done by Claudia. My friend and I have very curly hair. As I watched her do my friends hair with a fabulous cut and color she then used a product that is called curl keeper . To my surprise I could not believe what the results of this product did to my friends usually frizzie and unruly hair so I sat down and I asked her to style me and use the same product. I walked out with a new and updated style and no frizz and a defined curl and most of all I smiled and now I have found the hairdresser and product of my dreams. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CLAUDIA. HER CUT AND THE PRODUCT SHE USED AND HOW GREAT SHE MADE ME LOOK AND FEEL ... I NEVER HAD CURLS OR A CUT LIKE THAT EVER!!!!

- I was there in December of 09 and Marni did a wonderful job on my hair. I just needed a little trim because my layers were growing out. She went in and snipped here and there until I had a better shape. She no pooed me with Deva products and we did a DT (costs extra). She styled me with CK, which in the dry weather might not have been wise, but I wanted to see how it would go. I was dry because of the CK but I looked good. I never would have used as much CK as she did but it held my hair in place and I can't wait to try it in the summer. If you are in the area give her a try its worth it!

- OMG! I can't believe there is someone out there that actually knows how to cut curly hair! And better yet, I was able to find her! Marni is wonderful. And I look fabulous (even if I do say so myself). She taught me exactly what I can do to make my curly hair look great, educated me on the types of products to use and showed me how I can both dry my hair and keep my curls from frizzing. I had given up on being curly because I couldn't control the frizz ( I thought I had tried every product out there with no success), my curls wouldn't curl consistently and my hair takes too long to air dry(it gets much too cold in MI for that, a girl could catch pneumonia). So at least an hour a day was devoted to my flat iron. Add at least 30 minutes of blow dry time and I was lucky to get out of the house in under 2 hours. I feel like she has handed me the keys to the kingdom after 47 years of struggle. I swear I felt like crying in relief when she was finished with me. I know it sounds over the top, but if you have naturally curly hair you know what I mean. Marni is very nice, extremely knowledgeable and a patient teacher. I highly recommend her. Have her cut your hair once and you will be hooked! Now I just have to figure out what to do with all the time I'll be saving everyday. Maybe I'll sleep in now! LOL! THANK YOU MARNI!

- From the moment I walked into the salon I knew this experience would be much different than any other salon visit I have had. First, I must say I have never been to such a diverse salon (both stylists and clients). As a multi-racial client, it is nice to finally feel as though I "belonged". Second, Marni was so knowledgeable not only about curly hair but also about the curly girl method. She spent a lot of time analyzing my hair and then cut only where needed. Last, I have never been to a salon that sells the products that are specifically made for curly hair, which until now I have had to purchase on-line. If you are a curly girl and don't currently have a stylist that truly specializes in curly hair, you need to make an appointment with Marni. I guarantee it will change the way you feel about your curly hair.

- For me getting a hair cut used to be just as traumatizing as going to the dentist. Every hair stylist I went to gave me a terrible haircut. Most recently, a hairstylist gave me what some people like to call, “puppy dog ears”, but I’ve also experienced worse including the classic triangle head. Overall I had given up on my curly hair but then I went to see Marni Foster at Salon Spargo and she changed everything! She was so helpful and informative. I learned more about curly hair from her in 15 minutes then I’ve learned in 15 years. She not only gave me a great haircut but also showed me how to style my hair so that everyday it will look great! I really enjoyed my time with Marni and I plan to continue to go see her. Also, I was really impressed with the salon itself. It has a great atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and helpful.

Marni makes you feel like the most important person in the world, listening carefully to all your curly concerns. My cut is lovely, my curls are soft and shiny like I've never had before. Marni walked me through all the steps of how to care for my curls at home so I didn't have to worry. The salon is low-key and comfortable. Highly recommend!

- Marni cut my hair last week. I am so excited to finally find someone who really knows how to cut curly hair. I left there feeling so good about my hair and was able to get 3 days out of the style! It is rare that I've been able to get 2nd day hair much less 3rd day hair. I highly recommend Marni. Also, I actually enjoyed the salon atmosphere. I get tired of those loud obnoxious salons. This salon is pleasant and relaxing.

- I had the most wonderful experience with Marni. My hair has never looked so good and it actually looks healthy. This was the fist time I have ever had someone understand and listen to the problems that I have had with my hair. She took the time to show me how to manage my curls and maintain my curls. Where has Marni been all of these years that I have struggled to find someone that knew how to cut my long, course, curly hair? Well, now that I have finally found her I will not have anyone else cut my hair. She is the best!!! If you have curly hair and are from Michigan you have to stop in to see Marni at Salon Spargo. I really just can not say enough good things about her and the salon! It was the first time in 38 years that I felt that my hair was beautiful when I left a salon.

- I knew as soon as I saw her that she was going to be great with curls. Her own hair is so pretty! I knew a lot about CG before going to see her, but after a year of trying this technique and that product, it was great to talk with her and get "back to the basics". My hair didn't need much cutting, but she fixed a couple of problem areas and gave me a great education. I will be going back for sure! :)

- I had my cut with Marni in late March, and all Michigan curlies MUST go see her! I'm still loving my cut almost two months later, and I have every intention of going back for my next cut. Marni was absolutely awesome and did a really great job listening to what I wanted and helping me figure out what would work best with my face shape and curl pattern. I can honestly say that this is the first haircut I have ever actually loved, and Marni was definitely worth the trip! I finally have a style! After doing a careful dry cut (curl by curl!) and adding lots of layers, she gave me a conditioner rinse and styled my hair with Deva One Condition, Curl Keeper, and AnGell. She then did a little more touching up after it was dry (first with a diffuser on the ends, then under the hood dryer). In addition to being a Deva-trained stylist, Marni is also a Curl Keeper representative, and you can get all the products of those lines at the salon. No shipping costs! Really, I can't say enough wonderful things about Marni. She's incredibly nice and listened carefully to what I wanted and what issues I had been having. As a fellow curly, she follows the CG method herself and understands everything about it. The salon itself is pretty swanky as well and has a very upbeat atmosphere--all in all, the experience was worth every penny. Seriously, go see her!
