Today I went in for my first haircut at Jo Bruno. Everyone there was very friendly and Lucy did a great job. She asked great questions before cutting my hair to get a better understanding of its shape. You can tell that all the stylists there truly have a passion for curly hair. Lucy took the time to teach me about curl maintenance so I genuinely feel like I'll be able to recreate the style I got today. I can't wait to come back again.

I have wavy/curly hair and have always thought of it as a lost cause. I always got cheap haircuts and ended up apologizing to stylists when they didn't know what to do with my friz. Leah was not fazed at all. She gave me a lot of simple tips to control my hair, and my results at home have been great. It changed the way I think about my hair. Thanks!

Couldn't possibly be any happier! I've been to too many places that have no clue what to do with curls. Shapeless, cut improperly, the works. NOT THE CASE HERE!! I've never been happier with a cut and have never received more compliments. My hair is shaped and layered perfectly. I'm excited to return!

I loved everything abou my experience at Jo Bruno. I have gone to several salons and this is the best salon I have ever been to. Because of my curly hair hairdresser usually cut it wrong and I hate it and walk out unhappy, but I LOVED how my hair came out when Jane did it and can't wait to go back.

No. Never again. The WORST haircut of my entire life. It is devoid of layers; there is no shape. It poofs when in its natural, curly state. When straight, it hangs like a curtain, the bottoms blunt and heavy, the top lacking any movement whatsoever. It is not at all what I asked for. I had, as I was often told, "perfect" hair. Springy curls on the underneath, wild wavy ones on top. I'd finally reached a place where I was happy with the texture of my hair, that once stuck out amongst the pin-straight styles my peers sported. I'd figured out how to style it and I was in love with the ease and consistently curly turnout. The only drawback was that it came to my waist when straight. All of this I explained to this 'stylist' before indicating she take off 1.5-2 inches. She chopped off five. Five. She literally found the shortest layer from my previous haircut (with a different stylist at a now-closed salon, seven months prior) and cut every single hair to the exact same length. It is disgusting. People can't even offer sympathetic "Well you could try...". They want to know who did this to me so they can tell all their friends never to go there; most are amazed I didn't demand a full refund. I did not, by any stretch of the imagination, indicate that I wanted to chop off my long locks; I loved them. Save your hair and your peace of mind.

I had my first haircut with Jane two days ago and I loved the entire experience! I noticed a difference immediately, my curls were so beautiful, I couldn't believe they were MINE. My husband commented when I got home and he never does that. At age 40, I feel like I'm just learning how to properly care for my curls. The best part was That I've been able to get the same beautiful look at home thanks to Jane's lesson and fantastic tips to take home. I can't stop looking at my new head of hair and I love it. I would recommend Jo Bruno to any curly-head!!

This was my first haircut at Jo Bruno, and the best haircut I've had in a while! My hair is naturally wavy (swavy, I was told), but I sometimes blow dry it straight. The haircut Leah gave me works really well with both styles. It was also fun to learn about the best way to manage wavy/curly hair. I definitely recommend this salon and will return.

Jane was my hairstylist and Leah assisted her and I can say I highly recommend both of them. The haircut is terrific and my curls never looked better! But even more important was the whole experience of why they cut your curls the way they do and what products to use and when/how to apply them. Leah went step by step with me to make sure I could get the same results at home. For all those curly girls very frustrated with their hair, go to this salon, you will not be sorry and you will learn to love your curls. I would highly recommend this salon and especially Jane for the wonderful haircut. Thank you ladies.

I'm so glad I found this salon. At twenty, I still had yet to find a salon or stylist that knew what to do with my curly hair. Stylists in the past have always cut my hair wet, blown it out, and sent me out the door. Jesse took the time to examine my hair, listen to what I wanted, and was honest with me about what options would be realistic for my damaged curls. I ended up taking a great deal of length from my hair, going from mid-back length to barely touching my shoulders. Normally, this would be traumatic and terrible for me, but for the first time my curls look healthy, bouncy, and wonderful. I honestly didn't know my hair was capable of feeling as healthy as it does now. In addition to the amazing cut I got from Jesse, I also got a great color. I described to her the warm brunette tone I was looking for, and she really nailed it -- the color is exactly what I wanted. What really made this experience the best I've ever had though was that the salon staff shows you exactly how to care for your curls, and suggests the best products for your hair type (without pressure to make any purchases, though I did anyways). I tried styling my hair the way they showed me for the first time yesterday, applying products to my wet hair and diffusing immediately, and my hair has never looked better. Jo Bruno Hair will definitely be my regular salon from now on. I am more than pleased. My mom got her hair cut here as well (with Christy) and her hair looks better than it has in years! I would recommend this salon to anyone!

I took a trek (across state lines) - and I am so happy I did! I have had Deva Cuts before, and find that they are hit or miss depending on the stylist. Jo has some magic scissors, let me tell you. The cut is wonderful, even weeks later. It frames my face perfectly. I only asked that she leave it long enough for me to pull it half back, and that she try to layer the flat spot on the back of my head to make it not quite so flat. She did exactly what I hoped for. After the wash and dry (that's the only part of the Deva Cut I actually find off-putting...the hot dryer and metal clips stress me out), I went back to Jo's chair and we agreed that the length could be taken up some more. That I appreciated - extra time spent on making sure it's exactly right. I left the salon with a bounce in my step and in my curls - and I received tons of compliments. My hair looks exactly how I think it is meant to look. It's just perfect. The salon has a relaxed and friendly vibe, everyone I interacted with had a smile and something nice to say. They also weren't pushy about the Deva products, explaining everything and allowing me to decide. The cut works great with the products and with the ones I had at home, which I appreciate! I would highly recommend Jo Bruno Salon. I'll be headed back there for sure.

I recently had my first curly cut and low lights from Jo at Jo Bruno Salon in New Haven. There can be so much stress around getting a haircut if you have curly hair. However, after meeting Jo, with her warm embracing smile, I very quickly felt in the good hands of a curly hair specialist that is an artist as well. Jo is a thoughtful, curly yogi, working her magic in calm, creative, methodical, and subtle ways, to bring about the best environment for curls to form and shine. I wanted my curls trimmed and shaped without losing too much length, and I wanted low lights to add dimension to my natural gray, that I worked over a year to grow in. She listened and did just that. She did a beautiful job painting on the low lights that gave the finished haircut a lovely dimension that wasn’t there before. Additionally, I thought the receptionist, other stylists, and attendants were warm and friendly in an authentic way. All the products that were used on my hair were of high quality, great for curly hair, and pleasant smelling. It was an attractive, calm and caring environment. I felt very taken care of, and I’m going back to let Jo continue to work her art on my hair so I can look my best. I have an upcoming wedding this summer, and I know she will be this mother of the bride’s angel in the wings. I am very grateful for this.

Jo is so calm and easygoing. She snipped my hair quickly but super-carefully, and it was transformed! I tend to get that poofy "triangle head" effect with other cuts, but when I expressed concern about that, Jo explained what she was doing (and how her cu would counter-act that situation). At my last visit, Jo, also gave me subtle but extremely beautiful highlights. I'm a natural blond but don't love my winter hair--it comes in darker and looks a little "blah." I've never done highlights before because I like being natural, but a friend had recommended Jo's expertise to brighten me up a bit. She mixed the color herself, explained every step of what she was doing, and worked carefully but efficiently. In the two weeks since she did them, I've had several people ask me where I had my hair done. I love my new highlights and will come back to Jo to do them again. (This is saying a lot, by the way. I've moved to Virginia from CT but I will come back to Jo to have my hair done. No one understands curly heads as she does.) Everyone else in the salon is so friendly and lovely--I always have a great experience there.

I also decided that I wanted bangs so we talked about that and she was very careful with those. She explained that 80% of their clients are curly and their whole salon is sulfate and silicone-free! She styled my hair wet and upside down, and then clipped up my canopy before I sat under a dryer for awhile. Then, we trimmed up the bangs a bit more and after we talked and made sure I was happy with the cut, we were finished! I was very happy with the service and look forward to going back for my next cut!

I have naturally curly hair but have never been able to find the right products to keep my hair curly throughout the day without it getting crunchy after putting in so much product. So...I have to admit that I've been straightening my hair my whole life. Yes, I'm a poser. I've always gotten my hair cut straight and honestly, have never been happy with my cuts. I was recommended to go to Jo Bruno and not only does my hair look wonderful straight but I found the perfect products for my curly hair. Now, I have the ability to alternate between the two styles whenever I feel like it and I couldn't have been happier with the service as well as the cut. I've already recommended a few other friends and I will be going again as soon as I need another cut!

I went to this salon because of the reviews on naturallycurly.com. I was happy with my choice. All salon employees were friendly. My hair was cut dry, then washed and they used the deva curl products. Since it was my first time using the products, and having my hair cut at the salon, a thorough lesson was given in using all the products. Although I liked the cut, I think I was expecting more from my curls. This was why I waited to put up a review, but I have to say, when I used the product on my own, I really liked the way my curls came out. Using it on my own let me style it in my own way. Jo did a great job with my cut, and she was very kind. She did not push me to purchase any products. I did want to purchase products though, so I did ask, and she was very helpful in suggesting them. I visited Jo Bruno Hair for the first time two days ago after reading good web reviews about the salon and after reading EVERYTHING on the very-informative Jo Bruno website. You MUST visit the website: www.jobrunohair.com. I made my appointment online, even though I really didn't know whether I needed a straight cut or curly cut? I asked for Jane based on the photos of her work on the website. As of now, Jane IS my new stylist :) I had brought photos of styles that I like so that she would have an idea of what might appeal to me -- I knew that my hair and face shape are not like ANY of those in the photos, so I wanted Jane's input as to which, if any, would be the most suitable for my face and hair type. She helped me select the cut I now have, and I couldn't be happier! She did NOT use thinning shears on my hair -- YES! I do not have curly hair, but I DO have thick wavy hair. Every prior stylist I have ever had has reached for the thinning shears immediately. In fact, Jane told me she would have, as well, except that I had asked her to let the back of my hair dry "curly". She does not thin out hair which will be dried curly. I'm no beauty, but now my hair is :) The cut I received is amazing -- the WAVES in the back of my hair are just stunning. Let me summarize by saying that this haircut is the most even-cut style I've EVER had, it's the easiest one to maintain (SURPRISE!), it may be the best-looking style I've ever had, and the price was ridiculously low. Jane is a fountain of information on how to handle curly/wavy hair. I was apprehensive about my ability to duplicate those amazing waves I saw in the back of my hair when I left the salon, but I DID IT yesterday!!! Jane's impeccable instructions made it possible for me to duplicate the look she had created (FAST...no more half-hour blow-dries!!!) -- even though I used my own hair products. She told me the products she was using on my hair, every step of the way, but she did not indicate that I HAD to use those products to achieve the look. However, when my current products run out, I intend to try the ones Jane used in the salon. The salon itself is clean and cheery. I was greeted with warmth even though I was new. I will DEFINITELY be returning to Jo Bruno Hair, despite the fact that New Haven is not around the corner from my home in Lyme :)

I'll admit I was pretty nervous going to my first Jo Bruno salon appointment. I wasn't sure what to expect from a Deva-style cut, as I had only had my curls cut conventionally before, and I didn't know anyone first hand who had been to the salon. I was greeted with a warm welcome by Jane, who gave me a fabulous cut. When she first started, although she explained what she was doing very thoroughly, It took a few minutes for my nervousness to leave. She cut the curls dry, which I was skeptical of. But as soon as she was finished cutting and washed my hair, the new cut sat beautifully! It is without a doubt the best haircut I've ever received. In the past, after going to other salons, I have tried to avoid haircuts at all costs, because I was never happy with the results. Not here! I have never gotten so many compliments on a haircut as I did after leaving this salon. Jo Bruno salon and its stylists are so friendly and easy going. I would highly recommend Jane, not only for her overall pleasant demeanor and attitude but also for the tons of tips she gave me on dealing with my curly hair, from washing to drying to styling. I will definitely be back when it's time for another cut.

I moved back to the country and found myself a hair model on a very popular daytime TV show where I underwent a fabulous makeover - ahem. Well, they fried my hair with 2 rounds of color, straightened it and cut it crooked...Then I traveled back to Jo Bruno Hair for some Hair-apy, and thank God! Jo took one look at me and my lopsided 'do and said, Girl you need some layers! Why is everyone afraid to give me any layers?? Because they are afraid and they are not the expert like Jo Bruno is! After she cut my hair and air dried and expertly styled my hair, I once again feel like myself with nice bouncy curls that don't go flat on top and that don't require 6 products to look good. She cuts curls beautifully and what a pleasure to sit in her chair, she is a great person and a great stylist and I highly recommend Jo and Jo Bruno Hair! Fast-forward to this year and my hair has really become unmanageable. I needed help in learning how to work with curly hair. I ran into a girl here at work with gorgeous, silky, wavy hair and asked her what her secret was. She said she learned how to work WITH her curl instead of against it by going to Jo Bruno Salon in New Haven. I had a really good experience with Jo. She's very friendly, and the entire salon is very non-intimidating, and a nice relaxing atmosphere. My cut was great - I'm growing it out, and she didn't take off much length at the back (in fact, it didn't really look any shorter than when I went in, which was great). She showed me that my hair was uneven, and shorter on one side, and then evened it out, and gave me a few more layers around my face. Just subtle changes, but they made a big difference. My hair falls more naturally now than it did after previous cuts. Jane washed and styled my hair (with all Deva products), and talked me through the entire procedure, which was great. All in all, I'm very happy and will definitely go back for my next haircut. Prices are extremely reasonable, as well.

I am soo happy! I have unmanageable 3B hair. I should say had, because with Jo's cut, it looks wonderful. I live in New York City, but didn't want the attitude and cost of NYC salons. Jo Bruno Hair is wonderful. Jo listened, and cut my hair exactly as I wished. I was going from bra length to collarbone length, and was terrified, so I asked her to be very conservative in how much she cut. She did exactly what I asked. Then it was washed, dried. Jo checked it and, bless her, was willing to cut another inch or two off to get the look I wanted. The salon is relaxed, friendly, comfortable. They respect what you, the customer want. I am very happy with my cut, and with the entire experience. And yes, they have product, but there is absolutely no pressure to buy. Did I say I love this place?!?

I was a little concerned about getting a curly cut, because I do like to have the option to wear my hair straight occasionally, but Jesse convinced me that with my waves, the cut would work both ways. She cut it while curly/wavy and dry then cleansed and styled and put me under a dryer. I emerged with the most rocking waves, and a week later when I wanted to straighten them they looked fabulous like that too. I can wash it at the gym and go straight to class and my waves look perfectly styled because of the cut. I love, love, love my haircut. Jesse is just wonderful.

Jo Bruno’s Salon is wonderful. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. I went for my first appointment and was a little nervous because I’ve had not so good experiences with curly hair cuts. As soon as I sat in Jo’s chair, the nerves disappeared. I was treated with such kindness and I truly felt like everyone cared about how my hair turned out. Jo uses the DevaCurl method when cutting, which means she'll cut your hair dry, curl by curl. I was very impressed. My hair is very curly and thin. The cut gave my hair volume which is exactly what I was looking for. After my haircut, Jane spent time washing and styling my hair showing me step by step how to do it myself. The Jo Bruno Salon also sells the Devacare products for less than retail or online. I did purchase the products, but there was no pressure to do so. I'm totally sold. The prices were very reasonable. I will definitely be going back for Pintura highlights.

I got a great haircut. It was reasonably priced for New Haven. Jesse explained all the techniques and products she used. It was an excellent experience and I have already recommended Jo Bruno to all my curly hair friends! I can't wait to go back.

Jo's cut did A LOT for my wavy hair. Five gold stars!! I came here once before and got a mediocre cut from one of the other stylists. It was a nice cut for wavy hair, but I suspect would have looked nicer on really curly-curls. I decided to give the salon one more shot, this time requesting Jo as my stylist. Incredible!! I have wavy hair. Maybe a 2 curl, with ringlets of 3's mixed into it. Jo made my fine hair VA-VA-VOOM and I love it!! It was a nice cut when I left the salon, but after styling it on my own (I have yet to go to a salon where the stylists are aggressive enough to encourage a wave to be a curl...), it's AMAZING! AMAZING. AMAZING. The best it could be! I think the previous highlights from another salon, which I really didn't care for, look funky and stylish now. Is that possible?? The past few days since the cut I've been waking up with second day hair, which I never-ever had before. I'm so happy and grateful to live near such a great salon!!

I have been to Devachan in NYC twice and my $55 haircut by Jo at Jo Bruno Hair was as good if not better than my $125 haircut at Devachan. They do the same technique with the dry haircut and drier contraption. They also sell the Devachan products for a couple dollars less than they sell them at Devachan. Plus, the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly at Jo Bruno Hair, as opposed to Devachan, where I felt like I was not cool enough to be a client. I will be going back to Jo Bruno soon!

I have been following the Curly Girl method started by Lorraine Massey for years and I also went to NYC to the Devachan salon to get my hair cut. When I moved to CT it got harder and was very expensive. The reviews here took me to Jo Bruno Salon where Jesse gave me a ROCKIN' curly style with lots of bounce, body and curl. I love my hair more then ever now!! Thanks Jessie.

Jo Bruno Hair is the best salon in the Greater New Haven area! I used to go all the way to NYC for a haircut, which took time and money. Fortunately Jo Bruno Hair opened and has given me access to high quality products, style and personal service. I have long curly hair and before JBH - I would walk out of salons saying "oh, maybe it will be better when I style it" - I would leave salons looking like a big red poodle! At JBH, I walk out with gorgeous, shiny bouncy curls all behaving and looking fierce! Unlike the previous reviewer - I have never had an "uneven cut". I find it odd that that reviewer didn't just call the salon to go back and have them fix it. All top notch salons will do this for you. I know that it drives stylists crazy to think that someone is unhappy and didn't let them know. I love Jo Bruno Hair and I wouldn't go anywhere else! Great stylists, great products, great attitude = happy, gorgeous curls!

Jo Bruno is an absolute genius. I have been going to her for a couple years now after a reccommendation on this website. I spent my life walking out of salons in tears, or just in disgust and ran home to redo my hair. NEVER, EVER once have I had to leave Jo's salon and even touch my hair. I have very curly hair and originally had her cut it curly and dry. But one time I had her blow dry and flat iron it straight and it looks awesome too. My point is, she can cut it straight or curly and it still comes out great every time I do it myself. I dont know how she does it but I get compliments all the time and give the credit to Jo. Ive sent many a co-worker to her and they all love her. I have learned that curly hair takes work and the tips she gives are invaluable and work. I was doing everything wrong and wondering why my hair was fried and dead looking. Since Jo, my hair is in the best shape ever! Soft, shiny whther its straight or curly. The salon is very cool. Worth the inconvenience of having to park downtown New Haven. The other gals there are great too. Jesse has done some funky, cool cuts on the ladies that have been there at the same time and she is very knowledgable as well. Lavenia blew dry my hair once and did such an awesome job that she didnt even need to use the flat iron!!! that was amazing. Jeff at the front desk is very nice as well. its just an incredible place and I thank God that I found Jo. She is my hero and I take her advice to heart. Treat yourself to Jo Bruno Salon, you will never go anywhere again!!!

I was really excited to be going to this salon based on the reviews on this website. I'd gone to check it out before getting a haircut and everyone is super nice and the salon is really cute and homey, so I booked an appointment. I was given some useful tips for styling my hair but the haircut was disappointing. It was nothing like what I'd requested and I now have to grow it out to achieve the desired results. I also like to straighten my hair occasionally and when I did after this haircut, it was visibly uneven and now I can't wear it straight at all. Maybe it was an off day, I don't know, but I do know I won't be going back. It's really a shame because I really liked Jo, but not the haircut.

Jesse was great. I was donating my long curly hair to make cancer wigs and ended up cutting off 12 inches! Jesse listened so well to what I wanted, I wasn't traumatized by the loss at all. In fact, this is the best haircut I've had all my life. She also told me exactly how to get the most out of my new style and my curls, going through a typical morning ritual with me step by step. I recommend her highly and 110%!

Jo is rockin. I used to think that I should only let people with curly hair cut my hair, but Jo has disabused me of that notion. She knows exactly what she's doing, and is kind and friendly to boot! I had never gotten my hair cut in New Haven before (always went home to my mean Ouidad stylist in Philly), and I am happy to say that the recs on this site steered me towards an awesome stylist. Thanks Jo! My hair is exactly what I wanted!

I just got the best haircut of my life! I have coarse, curly hair and Jo knew exactly what to do with it. She cut it dry, and then gave me step by step instructions about how to care for my curls at home to keep them looking as good as they did when I left the salon. Just wonderful. Really listened to me, but also knew a lot - more than anyone I've seen - about how to cut and care for curly hair. Awesome.

Jo Bruno is AMAZING! My curly hair has never looked better. She cut my hair while it was dry so I could really see how the curls would fall, and she was careful not to cut off too much. She listened to me and cut my hair exactly as I wanted, and she genuinely cared about my happiness. She knew exactly what I was looking for. She uses Devachan products which are superb. Jo showed me precisely how to style and care for my hair so it is consistently shiney and healthy with beautiful curly ringlets. She also did a fantastic job on the color, and incorporated natural-looking highlights into my hair. I would definitely recommend contacting her!

for as long as i have been letting my hair go curly, i have been struggling to try to find a salon in which i felt comfortable. after my first cut from jo the other day, i dont think i will ever be going anywhere else. she is seriously amazing; she really understands and listens to what you want, she doesnt push products on you, she teaches you what to do every step of the way so your hair can look good on your own time, and above all else she is a total sweetheart. i love her.
