I am so happy I found Colors of Cold Spring Harbor. What a wonderful Salon--a lovely and relaxing atmosphere. The staff is wonderful. I went to Carol with lots of questions. I was all gray and while I think gray hair is great, I wanted to change things up a bit. While I wanted to do it, I was apprehensive. Carol and Linda listened to all my concerns and understood what I wanted perfectly. Carol used the product I wanted with expertise! I love my blonde hair color! It has been about a month now and it still looks great! It looks beautiful curly. I can't wait to go back this summer! This is my salon now, for color and curly cuts when needed. I highly recommend Colors of Cold Spring Harbor.

For years I settled at a Salon that rarely listened to my color & hair requests.
After a very disappointing color & cut, I decided to move on.
I discovered Colors of Cold Spring Harbor from a Google search. I didn't know what to expect, but I knew it should be better than what I had experienced for the last few years.
As soon as I walked in the staff made me feel like I had been a customer for years. The salon was warm, inviting and calm. I had been going to a place that rushed people in and out like an assembly line. At Colors of Cold Spring Harbor the staff catered to my needs while I relaxed in a soothing environment. It's difficult to find a salon on Long Island that knows how to cut curly hair. Colors of Cold Spring Harbor are experts at hair especially curly, frizzy, out of control locks. My hairdresser, Lilly, listened to my curly hair problems and complaints. She gave me a cut that fit my face shape and worked with my curly locks. As soon as I walked out of the shop, I received plenty of compliments. I can't wait for my next appointment.

I was a little apprehensive because I was scared of getting my length cut off. As soon as I walked in I felt at ease because the salon staff is extremely welcoming and so friendly!! You can tell they give off that family vibe with each other. I loved that they give you a form to fill out regarding your hair..what you love most, what you want to fix..Once that was filled out Joy attended me. She is sooooooo sweet!!! Very understanding of what each curly girl needs and lsitens to exactly what you want done! Joy gives you the cut you want. For me it was more volume while retaining length! I got just that! She knows what she is doing and she actually cares! I have recommended this salon to my other curl friends!! I will be returning when its time for my trim! P.s. Joy gives you tips while she is trimming! Every curly girl could use extra tips! One thing that sticks out for me, is the fact that they talked me out of dying my natural color! What salon doesnt want more money?? I loved that they truly made me see just how beautiful my own color is!! 2 thumbs up!!!!!

I just had my 2nd appointment with Joy at Colors of Cold Spring Harbor and got another fantastic cut! She listened carefully to everything I had to say and cut my hair just as I asked. From the cut to applying product through styling and drying you can tell she really knows what she's doing with curly hair. I am very excited to have discovered this salon, Colors of Cold Spring Harbor. Thank you all for posting your reviews otherwise I would not have known about it. I have curly hair (3A) and as most of you know, it is hard to get the right haircut that will not make your hair look like a broom as it grows out. I have never had a haircut on dry hair and I was nervous about it. Joy listened to my concerns and went with me through my styling routine to learn more about my hair. She then proceeded to cut my hair meticulously. It was amazing; I could see the curls coming back to life as she was trimming them. Before styling my hair, Joy showed me some tricks to keep the moisture locked inside. She is a fantastic stylist and such a warm person too! The atmosphere in this salon is great, very relaxed, not your usual hustle and bustle where all you hear is chatter. I have met Linda, the owner, a very nice lady that makes the place look like home. I am already looking forward to my next appointment. Give it a try, you will too!

Linda, co-owner, and Joy, Devachan trained hairstylist, were both AMAZING. I listened to all the other great reviews about Colors, and finally got the courage to call and make an appointment. The atmosphere is cozy and personal, and the location is just breathtaking (Cold Spring Harbor is a beautiful town). I went for a cut and color with Joy on a Friday and I was offered water when I got into the chair, and then a glass of wine when I was waiting for my color to set. Joy is very laid-back, but know what she’s doing and wants to make sure all communications are clear. She inspected my hair and carefully cut each curl, it was my first time ever getting this type of haircut but it was an amazing experience. We both agreed on an appropriate hair color… she was precise and focused on getting it just right. Joy is truly gifted when it comes to haircutting/styling and the art of connecting with people. I think the salon is kept immaculate and designed to fit the personalities of the employees, I will never forget the great experience I had at Colors!

I had a great experience with Joy at this salon. Having moved from SF recently, I was sad to give up my curly girl salon and stylist so was elated to find one on Long Island.
Linda was very helpful and flexible in helping me coordinate my first appointment. She was really willing to help me since I have a toddler and timing can be difficult.
Joy really looked at my hair and listened to what I liked, what I didn't and how I usually like to wear my hair. I really appreciated that she took her time and wasn't really preachy about the "right way" vs. the "wrong way" to take care of curly hair, but she was very knowledgeable.
Most of all, I felt comfortable and confident that I was getting a great cut. It's been several weeks and the cut is growing nicely. I'm going back in a few days for highlights and I can't wait.

I have been getting mediocre haircuts for years, and was ready to go into New York City to try and find someone who would work with my curls, instead of trying to straighten them, or generally botch my haircuts! I am so glad that I found Joy - she spent time with me, and my hair hasn't looked so beautifully curly in years! Before and after me, there were women coming in to see her with curly hair, and she told me that 90% of her work is with curly hair. I highly recommend her.

I moved to Long Island two years ago, and have been desperately seeking a Devachan-trained stylist ever since being introduced to the Curly Girl method in 2005 by my fabulous former stylist Brandie at V Vegaz in St. Louis.
I scheduled an appointment with Joy at Colors of Cold Spring Harbor after reading rave reviews of her on this site. "Joy" is precisely what I felt after Joy cut my hair. She is certified in the "Deva method" (for those who are familiar with it), so I was relieved when she told me she would be cutting my hair dry, and then shampooing/conditioning/styling afterwards. She really listened to my personal concerns and needs with my hair, and incorporated them into her knowledge of the Deva method when cutting and styling my hair. The salon has you fill out a hair profile questionnaire before your appointment begins, so that the stylists have a sense of your likes/dislikes/needs when it comes to your hair, which is awesome.
Joy cut my hair literally curl-by-curl when it was dry, so that she could see how the curls would fall. FYI, you should arrive at your appointment with your hair curly/styled as you would normally wear it, so that she can get a feel for your individual curl type and style. Joy was extremely patient and thorough, and I never felt rushed at any time throughout the appointment. As it had been awhile since having had my hair cut by a Deva-trained stylist, and I was having some issues with my hair, Joy took the time to review the method and give me some styling tips, so that I can achieve the look I'm hoping for.
I am so thankful that my stylist search is over! I enthusiastically recommend both Joy and Colors of Cold Spring Harbor to any curly girls in the greater NYC and Long Island area. NYC ladies, it's just a quick 1 hour train ride from Penn Station, and TOTALLY worth it. As a side note, one of the owners warmly greeted me when I came into the salon, and quickly offered me a glass of wine as I sat down to complete the hair survey. Now that's what I call customer service! If you're looking for a stylist you can completely trust with your curls, and an enjoyable, relaxing salon atmosphere, look no further than Joy and the Colors of Cold Spring Harbor. I recently had my second visit to Colors last week. Everything about my visit was perfect and enjoyable. Linda is extremely friendly and welcoming as you first enter the salon. Joy cuts my hair and she does a great job. She focuses on each curl individually and takes her time with each snip. She has a great knowledge of curly hair and she understands how to cut it in such a way that makes them look their best! I don't live very close to the salon, but the 40 minute drive it more than worth it!

Usually, my hair goes into "shock" when it's first cut, and it takes about 2 weeks before it decides it's going to do what I say. Now that I'm at that point, I must say that I love my curls!
Joy is a sweetheart, and spends a great deal of pre-cut time analyzing and planning your haircut. I've never had my hair cut dry before, so this was a new experience for me. Joy made little snips of my hair, like an artist sculpting a figurehead. After the cut, she showed me different styling tips, which of course I forgot the minute I left the salon, but that's my fault!
Colors of Cold Spring Harbor is so Zen and relaxing. I hate the noise and hustle of chi-chi salons. Colors was peaceful and serene, and Linda is involved as much as the stylists in making sure her customers are happily satisfied. The complimentary glass of wine was a nice touch! If you have time afterward, you can show off your new haircut while shopping in town!

I had my second hair cut with Joy 2 weeks ago. It is amazing what she did to my hair. For a long time I was trying to find someone that really is expert in curly hair, I could not be happier with how my hair looked after the cut. Joy looks at every curl and cuts one by one, very patiently and carefully. This was my first visit to COLORS and I definitely found my new hair salon! This place was quaint and cozy and didn't have that rushed, large, more commercial salon feel. It certainly was just what I was looking for in the atmosphere department, but the most wonderful part was the refreshing customer service I received. Everyone was so kind and friendly and were happy to discuss my laundry list of hair problems before we started anything. I have never been to a salon that focused on curly hair, and Joy gave me a marvelous cut which has been looking better every day (as I learn better how to style it). She listened to what I wanted and magically whipped my hair back to a style that works so well with my soft curly hair. Veronica updated the color and added some highlights that are so subtle it looks like sun-kissed. From the moment she pulled out color suggestions I could see she had a corrective plan that very much appealed to me. She nailed it! I highly recommend Colors and look forward to my next visit.

My daughter has very kinky curly hair and is now a teenager. She has never really had a good haircut until now. She saw Joy and had a true Deva cut. Finally someone that knows how to cut curly hair. Not only did my hair look & feel great after I left, I can do it myself & it looks just as good!! The dry haircut was interesting (but works!), as she cut every curl. I recently had my hair cut by Joy. She is absolutely terrific!!!! Joy is Deva trained and knows all the Devachan tricks. She listens carefully to what you want but had really good suggestions when I asked her for her input. The haircut I received was the same quality as the ones I would treck into Devachan for but less expensive and much more convenient.
Colors is a small, lovely, clean salon. The people who work there are all so pleasant and accomodating. I would highly recommend going. Ask for Joy if you're a Curly Girl!

I drive 45 minutes to get to this salon, because i love the Devachan trained stylists. Getting the right stylist for my hair is my top priority. I have had my hair cut by Joy and before that by Jennifer. And I love my hair!!! the salon is so cute, and everyone is so nice and it's by the water so it is just gorgeous. Highly reccomend the salon, no matter how far your drive, it is well worth it.

I was a Ouidad devotee until I went to Joy at Colours for my first Devachan cut last Fall! Well, my hair looked terrific last fall, and it looks great now. Joy takes the time to talk to each client, and continues the consult while she dry cuts your hair to perfection... and she is a perfectionist!! Every curl has to lay just so before she will let you get washed. Once you are washed, the style is set with Deva product, or other great product like Moroccan Oil, then your hair is clipped and you are set up under a gentle dryer and plied with coffee and water while you wile away your dryer time with an up-to-date magazine. After you are dry, Joy goes over every inch to make sure your curls are just the way both you and she want them! Also, the salon is adorable, clean and small in a former home overlooking the water and the town of Cold Spring Harbor. Everyone is friendly....from Linda at the desk, to the other patrons, stylists and employees! I highly recommend Colours! Audra B.

Joy practices the Devachan curly girl method; she cuts hair while it is dry, and consults with each new client so the haircut meets the curly girl’s specific hair needs. She expertly and diligently cut every strand of my fine curly hair into a flattering look. The haircut and service impressed me, Joy spent over an hour cutting and styling my hair. I called to make an appointment with Jenn but learned she no longer worked at the salon but was told there was a new stylist named Erica that was very good at cutting curly hair. I am so pleased with my haircut!! Although I was a little nervous since I usually get my haircut dry (and Erica cuts it wet) she reassured me that she would not take too much off (since I'm growing it long) and she would shape it.
