Mychal has been cutting my hair for over 10 years. She started when she lived in CA (where I live) and once she moved to Portland, I thought I would have to start all over again with a new stylist. As luck would have it, my daughter also moved to Portland! Now I get to have her cut it at The Proper Salon everytime I visit. No matter how long and unruly my mane gets, I don't dare cut it elshere. Mychal knows how to cut all different curl types and really listens to style challenges. She is also very good about educating with new trends and how to care for curls. Additionally, she's a joy to visit/is very good with current affairs and pop culture!

I had heard many good things about The Proper and from what I had observed the other staff seemed very competent and stylish so I the next time I needed a haircut I called and asked the receptionist who had the most experience cutting curly hair - and I ended up with Mychal who is AMAZING. FIVE STARS (can I give her six?). She completely understood how my unruly hair falls and was able to work with it - and managed to cut it exactly how I had envisioned it, something that seems surprisingly hard to find at Portland salons. She's also super friendly without being overly chatty and you feel very comfortable around her. She was eventually able to totally fix my previous highlights disaster. I really can't say enough good things about her. I had been asking stylists for YEARS to cut my hair so that it defines my curl but doesn't get "fluffy" and had resigned myself to the idea that it was impossible. I mentioned to Mychal that I wanted to enhance the curl in my hair, thinking it was impossible based on my previous stylists, and voila! she did it perfectly! Also...my color is amazing! I have medium-brown hair that tends to turn red when highlighted, Mychal used a chemist-worthy color recipe to add highlights and depth to my hair WITHOUT turning it red! Cut and color expert in one person?! Yes, it's true! I have really difficult curlyish big hair and its very hard to find a salon or stylist I trust with my hair. Mychal is a god-send for me. Plus, Mychal has very reasonably prices...a woman's haircut is about $40 and is worth every penny - and is significantly cheaper than other salons or stylists with the same level of experience.. Bottom Line: Great salon, Great Prices, Great staff - just make sure you follow recommendations about who to go to for your curly hair needs!

At last someone who understands how to tame my mane! Mychal stikes that balance between knowing what will look best based on my hair and face type and excuting the style that I desire. Proper Salon is a great salon in general but Mychal really knows what she is doing with a person who has curly hair. Her cuts are decently priced and I never walk out with anything less than amazing. She really has an eye for great cuts. I have sent several friends (both curly and straight hair) there and everyone agrees that she gives a great hair cut. Be sure to ask for a scalp massage too, she is top noch with that as well.

I wore my hair long for years and recently, Mychal cut my hair in a short A-line, bob. It's fantastic! I get compliments all the time and I always pass on her number. since she also has naturally curly hair she really knows how to cut it well. And she takes time to talk about the exact cut you want before she starts.

I have been wearing my hair long for many years now and have always had a difficult time finding a stylist to do a good job on my curls. I recently went to Mychal, who is new at the salon, but she has many years experience. She cut my hair into an a-line bob and it is the most adorable and fun style I have had in a long time. It really suits me and I have been getting non-stop compliments. She herself, has curly hair so she understands and talks through exactly what you want before she begins. Mychal is also fun to chat with while you are there. Highly recommended. I have sent a few people her way.

I just went to see Chai for the first time. I was nervous because 1, I'd never had a dry cut before and 2, it was my first time seeing a stylist other than the one I'd been going to for years in Seattle. But I could not be happier. Chai was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and fun. As soon as she put her hands on my hair, I knew she would be great. I told her I was thinking about doing an inverted bob, and we talked about whether or not it would work on me. As we were still talking, she said "I'm going to just start cutting if that's ok with you." She did! I almost backed out as soon as I started seeing long pieces of my curls fall to the floor, but I'm so glad I didn't. I think it's the best cut I've ever had! And she wrote down a bunch of names of products for me to try too. I can't wait to go back!

I've lived in the area for 5 years now and Chai is the first stylist I've come across who did a dry cut! She seemed extremely knowledgeable about curls and wasn't afraid to work with my curls. I am amazed with the results. She gave me exactly the look I've been trying to get for forever. I highly recommend her to any curly girl.

A couple of months ago I had tried to get an appointment with Chai (based on her great reviews) but our schedules didn't mesh. The Proper receptionist was so kind and told me that they were available with other curly stylist if my search for a highly rated stylist didn't work out. I then found a stylist with great reviews at another salon. I live in a small town so I was driving 300 miles and staying overnight at a Portland hotel for this haircut. Minutes before my appointment at the "other" salon, they called my cell phone to notify me that the stylist was sent home sick and they had no other curly stylists available. You can imagine how frustrated I was... and desperate! Since I was in Portland without an appointment any longer, I called the Proper with my fingers crossed. Frenchie LaTourneau was available so I gratefully accepted the timeslot. Frenchie was terrific. We've all had terrible haircuts so I was surprised at how confidently she approached my hair. It was clear that she knew what she was doing. I would definitely recommend Frenchie!!

Just an FYI to Portlanders everywhere, Chai has moved from Bliss to the Proper Salon in Portland. I just got my hair cut there and, as usual, she did an AMAZING job!! She can always make my curls bouncier by the time I leave. She has an amazing knowledge of curly hair and how to handle it. I would recommend her to ANYONE who is having trouble finding a stylist who understands how to cut and style their curly hair!!!
