I am 13 years old and lately my hair seemed out of control. My mom found Kelly Elaine, Inc and now I LOVE my curls. Kelly is truly an expert in the Deva Curl Product line and with the Deva Cut. I won't ever go to another salon or stylist again! We are 1.5 hours away from the salon but it's well worth the trip. She took her time with me and showed me how to use the products properly. I'm EXTREMELY happy with Kelly!

I went to Kelly for the first time at the end of April 2013. Since then I have had my hair cut by stylists who were clearly not trained to cut curly hair and/or would just trim myself.
Kelly cuts your hair dry, first examining the curl pattern (i have about 4 different curls on my head!) then cuts according to how it should lay.
She then introduced me to the DevaCurl products and showed me how to use. I will say, that on a typical day I do not have the time to dry my hair from a very wet stage to dry, but I've found ways to get around it.
I would recommend Kelly to anyone who has never truly learned how to manage their curls. Though the cut/consultation costs 100 bucks, you'll be with Kelly for almost a full 2 hours going through the motions.
The only thing I would recommend to Kelly is to offer a first time customer discount on the DevaCurl products to reduce the overall cost of the cut and then buying the products…. of which you can spend well over 200 bucks on.

First, a bit of background. I am originally from outside of Pennsylvania and moved to Pittsburgh for school. Aside from straying a handful of times, I have literally been seeing the same hairstylist since I was a toddler. Seriously, the same woman who gave me my first real haircut ("real" meaning it wasn't a trim my mom gave me as a kid) has cut my hair almost every other time since then, and I'm now in my early twenties. I love this woman to death, and she's become something of a family friend and has given me some truly spectacular cuts in the past.
I went to this woman in early March when my hair was very long, mostly covering my breasts. I wanted to cut it to my shoulders and it was like pulling teeth trying to convince the stylist to go that short. The whole time, she frowned and told me I would hate having shorter hair, that if I wanted to do something drastic I should get a tattoo or a new piercing. Nevertheless, she did a fantastic job, and it was certainly one of the best haircuts I've received. In mid-May, my hair was getting long (my hair grows very fast and had grown about two to three inches since the last cut), and I wanted to go even shorter. I didn't want to wait until my next trip home, nor did I want to convince my beloved stylist to chop off the rest of my hair, especially since I was one-hundred percent sure what I wanted to do. A friend recommended Kelly Elaine, and my mother has gotten several DevaCurl cuts in the past, so I decided to take the plunge.
Oh my goodness, am I glad I did.
Kelly, the owner, cut my hair. When I sat down with her before the cut, my hair was a couple inches past my shoulders and I told her I wanted to go as short as possible while still looking fabulous. Rather than encourage me to stick with long or medium-length hair, as everyone in my life had been doing, Kelly grinned and described what she thought would be the perfect hair cut for my face shape and personality. Then she got to work, cutting about eight to ten inches of hair off (I was unable to donate my hair as it was bleached and dyed). She was very friendly and talkative the entire time, and though she accidentally cut me with the scissors at one point, everything went very smoothly.
Although I've subscribed to the curly girl method since high school, Kelly went through everything she was doing while washing and styling my hair, which I am very thankful for. She brought me the curly girl handbook to read and left me alone for a bit before bringing me back to the chair to cut a little bit more.
All of this was occurred this past Thursday. You can look at my profile picture to see how the cut turned out. After having long hair since toddlerhood, I can honestly say I have never been happier with my hair.
I especially love how Kelly was really willing to listen to what I wanted. She really tried to fit the cut to me, suggesting a few possible styles and then adding, "But you're edgier than that, so let's do this instead," and offering another option. She described what she was doing as she was doing it, all while smiling and making conversation.
Five stars and a HUGE thank you to Kelly Elaine!

I got my first DevaCut today. I have s-wavy, thick, shoulder length hair. Kelly first dry cut my hair. She is both friendly and informative (side note: she also has adorable pets.) Then she took me back for a wash, where she explained each step of the curly routine. I then sat under a hooded dryer. Lastly, she brought me back to the chair for another round of cutting. She took before and after pictures: It was amazing how different my hair looked in only two hours! My curls are stronger, bigger, and much more even. I completely recommend this salon, and I intend on coming back despite the hour drive from my home!

The second Kelly started working on my hair, I could tell she knew what she was doing. She understands my hair better than even I do and really took the time to hear me out and help me figure out what I wanted. She was real and honest with me during the consultation, which I couldn't have appreciated any more.
Any rumors or other reviews you've read about having products shoved down your throat are entirely exaggerated and pretty much untrue. I was asked once as I was checking out if I was buying any products and that was IT. I ended up buying them online later anyway because of the amazingly soft, bouncy and frizz-free way they made my hair.
Kelly was great-- very friendly and SO talented at her job. For the first haircut with color was about $160. I already can't wait to go back in the spring to try out the special curly hair highlighting technique she was telling me about. I'll never go to a regular salon again!

Kelly is the BEST!
I have curly hair that was treated like it was straight for the majority of my life, but then, in 2010, I had an epiphany; I was forcing my hair to be straight against its will! I started using a curly girl method of hair care in 2010 and, finally, after nearly three years of letting my hair do exactly as it pleases, the final piece has fallen into place now that I have found Kelly Elaine Inc. This will be the only salon that I go to from here on out.
While I maintained a CG method of hair care, I have only gone to stylists in the past that claimed they knew how to handle curly hair, but, it was always the same story. They would wash my hair and then cut it - which is awful for curly hair! My hair would never look the way I envisioned it should when I would leave the salon, any layers that were cut into my hair were not suitable for my curly hair, and my hair would always end up frizzier than when I first sat in the chair. And while my hair is not super curly, it would always shrink to a much shorter length than I had hoped for, so, I would find myself having hair that was way too short for my liking for a few weeks until it would grow out a bit. And the worst, personally, would happen when stylists would cut my hair all one length which would drag the curls in my canopy down. A proper curly cut really makes all the difference.
Once I found out about Kelly Elaine Inc on NaturallyCurly.com and saw all of the awesome before/after pictures on Facebook, I knew that this was the place to get my hair cut. And boy was I right! The atmosphere of the salon is extremely inviting. When I walked in, I was greeted by Kelly, Faith, and Goose, one of Kelly's dogs who happily came over to say hello while I checked in as a new client. Kelly and Faith were extremely personable and were very easy to chat with while I was getting my hair done. I have always felt awkward when trying to talk to stylists before, but, not here!
Kelly did an awesome job with cutting my hair and Faith was amazing as well, showing me how to wash and style it with the Deva products. I was so delighted with my hair cut, it's honestly the first time in years that I have walked out of a salon loving my hair this much.
For the curly crowd, Kelly Elaine Inc is the entire package: knowledge, skills, and a comfortable atmosphere.

I never realized how very special having naturally wavy/curly hair was until I visited Kelly. I have mostly S'wavy mixed with some Botticelli curls. For a couple of years, I spent a fortune on Aveda's products designed to create/enhance curls. However, then I would go to my previous hair stylist and she would cut it in a manner that would literally strip the curls away simply because she did not understand natural curly hair. I've been to Kelly twice (mind you, the time between appointments was 9 months and my hair was still in great shape when I went back this week) and I am truly amazed by the results experienced from having a unique haircut (cut while dry), being educated on caring for my curls and then using the Deva products that are designed specifically for curly guys and gals. I absolutely LOVE my "Goldie locks" and am super grateful that I found Kelly Elaine, Inc. Go see her...you'll love the experience and adore your hair even more!!!
I discovered this salon when visiting the US this summer and LOVE IT. Kelly whipped my curls back into shape and set me up with the Deva system. I have been using the Deva system since July and could not be happier! I had a maintenance cut since July since I live overseas, but was sure to make an appointment with Kelly when back in the States over Christmas. She takes the time to teach you about your curls, how to properly care for them, and will always be there to answer questions. Highly recommend.

I had read the Curly Girl Handbook a few months ago so I thought I knew what I was doing as far as using the products go, but I was wrong. When Kelly used the products she walked me through every step and didn't move on until I understood what was happening. She is a great teacher, patient and funny. For the first time in my life, I felt comfortable in a salon. I have gone my whole life not knowing how to care for my curly hair and Kelly changed that in one day! If you have a young daughter with curly hair you should really consider taking her to Kelly. Don't let her grow up hating her hair!

I straightened my hair for 15 years and I finally decided to let it dry naturally. I didn't know I had curls (my hair was always wavy) then I had to figure out what to do with it, a straight cut with this much hair was not doing it for me. After 3 hair salons and one year later I found thru this website Kelly's salon.
Last week I had my first Deva cut and I love it. Kelly showed me how to use every products (from washing it to drying), my hair has never looked this good!
My favorite part is the haircut; I'm so happy to have found a stylist who can cut my hair dry and give it a style of it's own. We all have our own personality and we should show it. This cut does just that.

Great Curly Salon! Ever since I was a teenager, I have been on the hunt for that one salon who could give me the perfect hair cut to make my curls look amazing and also show me how to do my hair so I wouldn't have a frizzy mess when I tried to do my hair after they cut it. I thought I had found the place last year at a salon who did Deva Curl cuts and sold the deva products, but they never showed me how to use the products properly or how to style properly. I happened to be in Pittsburgh for a weekend and found Kelly Elaine's Salon. She gave me a very cute cut that makes my curls the curliest they've been in a long time. They also showed me how to wash my hair and what products to use and how to style my hair with the deva curl products. I have been doing my hair now for a week and they are so soft and the frizz is very minimal if any.
Even if you think you are using the products correctly I would go just to get a hands-on lesson on how to use them. I learned so much even after I had read the book and had been using the products for a few months. The trip there was well worth the experience and the education on my curls. If you are like me and searching for that one place to help you make the best of your curls, then you should go see Kelly.

One of my first concerns was that the stylist wouldn't listen to me. From the time I first sat in the seat I had her attention. The best part was she could relate to my fear. Yes fear. Any one who has curly hair understands. All I could imagine was choppy steps in my hair and a style I didn't want.
She was very patient with me and discussed with me every step before she snipped.
The hair cut was great and exactly what I wanted. Kelly could relate to all my hair issues and had tips for me. She wasn't a product pusher either. She wanted me to get accustomed to the new products I bought and for my hair to adjust to the new routine.
Kelly is a bit of a trip for me to travel to her salon. About an hour and half drive. It was worth it!!!

I had a fabulous visit to Kelly Elaine, Inc. over 2 months ago. I have been waiting to write a review based on how my hair continued to change with using the new Deva Curl products and my Deva Curl Cut. Kelly was very welcoming and took time to listen to my concerns about my hair and a new cut. I asked her to give me some longer bangs, which she did, and I couldn't be happier. Previously, I was very doubtful as to whether a curly girl could where bangs but I find that they soften my face and add tons of volume. I also received an eyebrow wax, and a color, both of which I was very pleased with.
I would strongly recommend Kelly Elaine, Inc. to any curly girl, whether she has embraced her curls or is working toward that. Kelly is very skilled in her management of Curly Hair and is extremely patient in her education of new clients. Since my visit and introduction to the Deva Curl line, the condition and strength of my hair has improved ten fold. I no longer fear a humid or rainy day and I spend nearly one third of time on hair care in my morning routine!
Kelly Elaine, Inc. is THE ONLY SALON IN PITTSBURGH FOR ME!

Had my first Deva cut last week after not having a haircut in 3 years due to one of the classic horrid pyramid shaped cuts I had previously received. Having not had a haircut in such a long while I was nervous going in but that nervousness quickly disappeared when I met Kelly, with her overwhelmingly joyous personality. Every time I started to get a few nerves back one of her furry friends happened to stop by which made me completely forget any worries. Her salon is friendly and cheerful and honestly was the best time I ever had getting a haircut. After the initial cut Kelly took me back and explained how to use each product and had me feel the changes in my hair so I knew what to look for when I did the steps at home. When I saw myself after everything was done I was completely shocked into silence. I had never seen my poofy, dry, frizzy hair in such sleek, defined ringlets. Kelly did a fantastic job and I have since spread the word to all of my curly friends... everyone who has had the horrid pyramid poof haircut and is at wits end about their hair needs to visit Kelly to get a Deva cut and learn about the product line from her, you wont be sorry!

I just received my first Deva cut from Kelly and was blown away at how different my hair looked... it went from this dry, knotted, poof to a hydrated, defined, curly wonder. Now having had the horrendous pyramid poof hair cut that so many curly girls get at one point in their life from a stylist who "knows" how to cut curly hair..psh.. I was a bit nervous walking in. That nervousness was immediately squashed by Kelly's overwhelmingly joyous personality and a few of her furry friends that came by to say hello, including one who sat with me in the chair during the cut. Now I will say some of those nerves did come back as she began to cut some of the shorter bits and my hair expanded outward in something resembling a halloween wig due to all the touching. I had seen pictures of her work so I didnt let the nerves take over since I knew the outcome was going to be fantastic. After finishing the cut she took me back and used the Deva products to tame the wild mane that had come about. With each and every product she used she explained what it was, how it worked and had me feel my hair so I knew what is should be doing when Im doing it myself. After drying and a few touch up snips I was done and curlier than ever. If any curly haired man/woman/child is fed up with their unruley curls I highly suggest making an appointment to get a cut from Kelly, it will change your outlook on your hair. I was stunned silent as I had never seen my hair like that before... I will surely be a repeat customer and will refer every curly girl I know to Kelly!

Getting my first official "Deva" concept haircut at Kelly Elaine's was a great experience from beginning (overgrown, frizzy hair) to end (beautifully styled, easy to maintain, healthy hair.) Kelly's salon could not possibly be more friendly or more fun. She makes you feel welcome like a member of the family or a lifelong friend; even on your first appointment.
I've been looking for a stylist who believes in the Deva concept as much as I do - and I've found her. Kelly talks with you, listens to your concerns, and then wields her magic. While she's styling your hair she is teaching you how to care and style for it on your own. Unlike some styles - when you walk out of the salon with your hair looking great....until you wake up the next morning and try to style it yourself.......Kelly is showing you how to style it the whole way through.
I truly appreciate that she has taken the time and effort to travel to NYC and be certified in the Deva Concept. Thanks Kelly !

Just got home from my first appt. at Kelly Elaine. All I can say is I'm doing the happy dance here. What a great experience at her salon! From the time I entered, Kelly and Liz made me feel so at home. It's a small, intimate salon where half of my time was spent laughing--a first for me since normally I am sitting white-knuckled in the chair hoping the stylist doesn't cut too much off.
Kelly talked to me at length before ever touching my hair with scissors. She very patiently dealt with my control freak paranoia about too much being taken off as happened to me the last time I got a cut. She made me feel she had all the time in the world for me.
Kelly is fresh from her Deva certification in NYC and is as enthusiastic as anyone could possibly be about helping you get the most from your curls. She took the time to explain product use and best ways to style.
I also got overall color done, which I was extremely happy with. Besides being a hair artist, Kelly is also a fine artist and has some of her own artwork on display in the salon. The salon is also full of artwork and jewelry that's for sale from other various artists. As far as the ambience of the salon, it's great.
Someone near me was also getting a manicure/pedicure from Liz. I heard that client wowing about how happy she was, and she planned to refer a relative to the salon.
Overall, five curls up!

I had the pleasure of having Kelly cut my hair during a special Deva training in NYC, so this review is about Kelly and her curly hair artistry. I've been a Deva product user since 2003, and have had Deva-type cuts through that whole time as well. I usually run in to not getting the best haircut the first time seeing a stylist simply because I know it can take time to figure out all the unique things a person's hair does (in addition to the fact that it is curly). But Kelly nailed it! I love my cut - it is exactly what I wanted, leaving the overall length, but giving it some shape and definition. We had talked through what she was going to do during the consultation, and I feel she listened well and gave me good feedback so that I was pretty confident that I would love how things would turn out even before we started. Kelly also did the pintura-style highlights, and I love the color and the overall look. Because of time she was only able to do highlights, but we discussed what having lowlights as well would do, and I feel confident that were time not an issue, I still would have loved the end look.
I'll admit that I usually ask a lot of questions about the Deva products and how to use them, and the various techniques for applying, styling and drying (even though I have been doing all this for quite a while, I always feel there are more things I can learn to give me more options with my hair), and Kelly was great to answer all of them. She took the time to show me what the various steps should be like from no-poo though one condition and post cleansing styling. I only wish that I lived closer to Pittsburgh so that I could go back to her regularly!

I am a recent convert to the Deva product line (I started in early June 2010). I have been curious about a "Deva cut" since then - but had somewhat forgotten about it, since I no longer live in New York City.
WORD OF ADVICE: EVERY curly girl in the Pittsburgh area needs to A. switch to Deva products, and B. Have Kelly cut and color their hair from now on, forever and ever, amen. There are really no if's and's or but's about it. Plain and simple - she's the real deal. A true hair expert, an artist, truly listens to her clients, genuinely understands and is educated in the Deva technique, but is not pushy in the slightest when it comes to her opinion or purchasing products.
I came in for a major change in color this evening and what I walked out with was amazing color and a beautiful, shapely, healthy cut. If you are unsure about the "Deva" product line - I dare you to try i for a FULL MONTH, have your hair cut and styled by Kelly, and if you don't swear up and down by it and aren't completely transformed, renewed, and inspired by your new hair, I'd say you are ca-ray-zy.
Call Kelly! Get an appointment!
I can't speak for non-curly haired folk, but at the very least, she uses wonderful product, in a relaxed - no fuss environment, her prices are standard, listens to what you want, and is so bubbly you can't help walking out without a smile!
I will definitely become one of her "regulars."
I'm so happy I found a local hair stylist who I can trust with my precious locks!

Review:
I am so happy I found this salon! As a "S-wavy" girl, I've been looking for a Deva-certified salon in the Pittsburgh area for some time and I finally found it! I got two cuts at another certified salon in Slippery Rock, but when I went to Kelly I was so much happier with my cut. Kelly is really educated in and dedicated to curly hair. She asked me lots of questions and really listened to my concerns. This was the first time I felt like I could completely trust my stylist AND the first time I could leave a salon without redoing my hair! (I always had to rewet and style it myself...every time I got my hair cut!) Kelly was hilarious and down-to-earth and she even convinced me to get my eyebrows waxed after several years of resistance and they turned out great! I am so glad I came and I really like my hair. I am definitely going back and I would recommend this salon to ANY curly girls in the Pittsburgh area!
