I have always struggled with trying to find the right cut for my medium length, very thick, color-treated, coarse wavy hair. After reading the reviews on this site, I decided to go to Jackie since she was so highly recommended for cutting wavy and curly hair. I'm so glad I went to her because she was fabulous. Jackie made some suggestions on the right cut for my face and hair type, demonstrated the products she used (without putting any pressure on me to buy them) and then was very patient in explaining how to do the style myself. If you have the kind of hair that is difficult to cut and style, Jackie is your stylist. She will make you look great.

I was very nervous about going to Jackie since my previous stylist had been cutting my hair for the past 14 years. I needed someone new to give me useful tips on how to style my curly hair when wet and to give me a great cut and Jackie delivered on both fronts. She was very personable and took the time to listen to my frustrations about styling my hair. Would recommend her to any curly girl in the Washington, D.C. area.

My haircuts with Joanna have been hit-or-miss. Sometimes she is really precise and attentive (she is good about fine-tuning a cut at the end) - but one time she cut off way more than I wanted, and I wore it up for weeks to hide how short it was.

I was really nervous because I just moved to the area. My last cut was 6 months ago and I had to go back to her 3 times before it was fairly even! Anyway, Jackie listened to all of my complaining and then gave me a great cut. She gave me tips about how to style it when I'm on my own plus I left with great hair. Two thumbs up!

I used to go to someone in Kentlands but she left abruptly, so when I moved to Bethesda... I decided to find someone in Bethesda even though the salons are a bit pricey... and I saw Jackie's reviews and I knew I had to just go to her and see if she would be great with my hair... I give her 5 stars!!! She's amazing. She is fun to talk to and she's just a really wonderful stylist that will cut to your standards to make you walk out of that salon gorgeous!!!!!!! You MUST go to her. She is worth EVERY penny. :) And, oh, her prices are VERY good for a Bethesda hair salon!!!!!!! Lux Studios is also a neat unique salon since you get your own privacy while you get your hair cut!! Apparently each stylist gets their own space/room!

I've been going to Denise for 8 years now and there's a reason I keep going back to her; she's great. Denise is sassy and fun and always responds really well to what I ask for and works with me to give me exactly what I want. I've only ever had one haircut I didn't like and that was because I didn't ask her to fix what I didn't like about it. Denise has great vision as a stylist and knows instinctively what cut will work best for a person. I've been with her through short hair and long and she works equally well with both. My hair is stubbornly wavy and she always makes it look its best. I would recommend Denise for anyone with wavy hair who's looking for a stylist who will listen to you but always add her own vision to your hair.

I recently went to see jackie for the first time. She is so great! She knew how to cut my curly hair in a great way. She didn't push any product on me and she gave me some great tips on how to do my hair at home. Plus, she is very nice. I highly recommend Jackie!

I went to Jackie based on the recommendations I found on naturallycurly.com and I am absolutely thrilled! I got a cut and color from her after not having been seen by a stylist in over a year. She did a fabulous job on both fronts - I have never felt so great walking out of the salon! She has a wonderful personality on top of being extremely talented. My straight-haired girlfriend also got a cut and was very happy as well. I plan on being a regular client!!

It is very difficult to find someone who specializes in unruly curls, someone who understands that one inch is really three inches, and copper is orange over time. I have been seeing Joanna for 3 years, and have NEVER been disappointed. I will give you that it is a bit pricey, but no more than other fine Bethesda Salons. I have done the research. if you tell Joanna to cut 5 inches she will. If you tell her just a little trim that is what you will get. She listens to her clients in order to meet their wishes. She is very detail oriented and does a perfect job with highlights. I would very highly recommend!

I am writing with a very positive review of the cutting and color services provided by Jackie at Lux Salon. She has cut my hair several times -- different lengths and styles -- each time finding a nice shape and style for my wavy hair. She has taught me how to style my hair in curly, wavy and straight styles. I recommend her without hesitation.

I went to see Jackie this week after reading so many great reviews here. I trust my very difficult unruly hair to no one and am always apprehenisve when trying out someone new. Jackie was fun, sweet, and totally unpretentious. We talked about my hair for a long time, so she could fully understand what I wanted out of the cut. She gave me a fabulous cut, with just the right layers. It has fabulous shape too - no mushroom, or triangle head. I also loved how she styled it. Normally I am never happy with how hairdressers style my hair, even when I have gotten a great cut. Oh, and I should add that she really took her time with me. I think I was there for around 2 hours total.

I went to Joanna three times before I gave up. The first time, the cut was just OK. She was late from going home to walk her dog and seemed rushed while cutting so she could get the next client in. I figured 'everyone has an off day' so I tried her again. The 2nd time she seemed just as rushed and kept saying that she needed to hire a girl to wash hair so she could cut more peoples hair. My cut was only iffy-to-OK at best. I really didn't like it to be honest and when I mentioned it to Joanna she told me that 'I just needed to get used to it'. She really didn't seem interested in what I wanted since she was trying to get another client in the door. So back for the 3rd and last time (what can I say...I'm a stubborn individual who wanted to believe since she was written up well and she is close). The cut wasn't better than the other two times and the color was HORRIBLE!!!!! I told her that I really, really didn't like the color and she said that she did and I would need to get used to it (sound familiar?). That was the last time she will ever touch my hair. I wouldn't let her cut/color my hair for free if she came to my house...that's how upset I am with her attitude. She was telling me how she finally hired a shampoo girl so she could have two clients going at the same time. Are you kidding me? She can't even do a good cut and color on ONE person, let alone have TWO going at one time. I hat to say it because it's someones livelyhood but avoid her at all cost!!!!

Denise is a really cool and talented stylist. I went to her wanting a more funky cut for my hair, rather than a boring curly cut that just varies in length, and I love what she did. My hair looked great the entire time that she was cutting it, which was an indication to me that she knew what she was doing and that the cut would look good. Also, she used a wide variety of interesting techniques that I had not seen before. Finally, when she was finished cutting my hair she explained what she did, how each different layer was intended to fall, and how I could style the cut in different ways. Totally fun, smart person, and a fabulous stylist. I highly recommend her.

I saw Jackie based on the recommendations from this site. She did a great job with my very thick, wavy hair.I've just recently stopped blow drying & started wearing it in it's natural state so I am still getting used to how to work with it.She took the time to show me some tricks for styling it myself. The fact that she's there on Sundays is also great. I have been able to wash & go with this haircut & it looks & feels great.

I am new to the world of curlyness, having gotten curly hair relatively late in life (!). Since I don't have a big budget, one of the things I really appreciate about Jackie - who I've followed for more than 5 years now - is that she always gives me a cut that holds its shape beautifully as it grows out, so I can go as long as I want between appointments - and still get compliments!

Jackie gave me a wonderful cut and color last week. She spent a LOT of time asking me what I wanted, and took a lot of care with my hair. I even showed her a book called "Grow Hair Fast" which talks about a special type of haircut designed for growing hair quickly, and she read the relevant section and cut my hair using some of the principles featured in the book. She never tried to sell me any products or wasn't pushy at all in any way. My hair looks very good - it's layered and falls nicely -- I'm very pleased and would highly recommend her. The color also came out well. Her rates are reasonable for Bethesda - $65.

I was extremely disappointed after reading the reviews here on Joanna. Although she did a very nice job on highlights, she gave me a straight haircut both times -- part in the middle, pull down the layers, and trim. For the prices she charged, I could have gotten the same cut at SuperCuts and saved a heck of a lot of money. I didn't feel like she listened to my description of how my hair behaves or tried to work with my curl at all. Now I have a triangle/pyramid cut and layers that make no sense. Definitely not recommended.

I have very fine, thinning hair that is naturally curly, and I have a very round face. It is really hard to find a flattering style that will both compliment my face shape and minimize the thinning (I'm 57 years old!). Jackie did a terrific job on my hair, using a razor cut to shape the style to my face. She's very consultative also, never cutting before explaining what effect she is aiming for and getting your OK. I would highly recommend her to all!!!

After reading the reviews on this site, I took a chance and went to see Joanna today (12/22/06). Huge risk before the holiday's, and I must admit that I was scared! I am African American with very curly hair that's kind of a cross between Rachel True, Nadia Turner, & Cree Summer all on the SAME head. Most people don't know what to do with it or want to slap a relaxer on it but I love my curls. I've pretty much mastered my hair routine but was seeking a trim/cut that would look great curly or straight. That's exactly what I got and I appreciate the fact that I wasn't bombarded with products or salon jargon. Parking isn't great but it's worth the slight irritation :)

I am the type of person that doesn't trust my hair to anyone. It is extremely thick and curly and most hairdressers I've gone to have no idea what to do with it. I've recently entrusted my hair to Jackie and she has done a fabulous job! She isn't intimidated by it, as so many have been in the past, and she knows how to deep condition, cut, and style it. I highly recommend her!!

Joanna is super nice. I went to her once before and she gave me a descent cut. But I think she's not consistent. I got my hair chopped off yesterday and cried all night and still feel sick to my stomach today. I just want to hide. I told her I wanted random layers and wanted to keep it long since I've worked so hard to grow it out. She even mentioned that I have long hair and would only cut a centimeter...she cut like 6 inches! Imagine when it dried! Now I literally have a short poodle-like poof in front and a mullet in the back. Two abrupt layer. She cut it as if I had straight hair! It's choppy and poofy and just awful. I've never had such a bad experience in my life. I wanna cry right now...I'm stuck with a mess of a hair for at least a year until it grows out enough. So sad. :( What a waste of money and time growing it out.

I am of Middle Eastern descent, so I have that course curly hair that most girls struggle with. I have spent a lot of money on curly hair specialists and have had great results and some not so great. I was tired of the Ouidad cut, which has been leaving me with a little poof and sometimes that triangular shape to my hair. Not attractive. Ijust got my hair cut by Joanna and even though she did very minimal cutting, my hair lays better than before. I don't have that poof, nor that triangular shape that I dread. She added layers, which Ouidad recommends against. But, hey, it worked this time. It's not choppy, it just lays well. I expected to pay like $45-50 bucks, but Joanna now costs like $70 bucks, so it's not a cheap cut. But hopefully I won't need to go in that often.

I saw all these great reviews for Joanna and really wanted to give her a try but unfortunately she didn't have any openings for three weeks! I was able to get in touch with Joanna and she recommended me to Susan. I then found out that Susan cuts Joanna's hair so I decided to give her a try. Susan did a great job with my hair, I have fine hair with "lazy curls" and Susan made my hair look bouncy, full and healthy! She took time to show me the right products for my hair and how to style it. I'm happy to say that I really liked Susan and Lux and will definitely go back.
