- I got excited about this salon after reading the great reviews regarding Carmen. The salon is just ok. If you have curly hair and have no idea what to do with it, you might really like this place. But if you have curly hair that is stylish and you want it to look really beautiful, this is not the place for you. They will charge you $70. for a very basic hair cut and then just put you under the dryer. You will walk out looking like you just let your hair air dry with it not having any sort of prettiness or style to it whatsoever. I had to go work afterward and was embarrassed about the way my hair looked that day! I also told Carmen that I like my top layer shorter than what the curly hair book suggests. She replied that hairstyling was not just doing what the book says, and I liked that. But when it came to cutting my hair, she said the top layer needed to grow because I should be able to be tuck it behind my ear. So, she does go by the book afterall...and once again I had to go home and finish up a hair cut that I paid way to much for without getting what I wanted. Still searching for a curly salon that really wants to bring out the beauty in curly hair and not just dry it naturally and call it a day.

- I am originally from Michigan, but currently live in Europe. I decided to go natural almost 6 months ago, and when I went back home to visit family I discovered this salon. I read all of the reviews about Carmen, and really got excited to see her and sit in her chair. I was not disappointed. She informed me about the condition and texture of my hair, and made me even more excited about the whole process. She put warm highlights in the front, and taught me a new technique for styling. I would definitely recommend her services to all curly hair ladies (and men) :-)

- Having just moved to Ann Arbor, I needed to find a stylist who could deal with my mop of corkicelli curls who wouldnt destroy all of the progress I had made to keep it healthy. I came into the salon already knowing a TON about the care and maintenance of curly hair and specifically knowing what works for my hair. Even knowing what I do, Carmen was able to tell me even more, such as how to put my hair back without using an elastic hair tie, as well as how to keep my curls from flattening on the top. Carmen was very sweet and friendly, even in the midst of a pretty bad bout of morning sickness. She sat me down and we immediately began to talk curls. She listened to what I wanted, giving her own suggestions as well. Since I am in the process of growing my curls very long, she is going to give me more suggestions for styles I can do as it grows. It is a little pricey ($70) but you get what you pay for, and I am extremely happy with my cut. My ends are much healthier now, and no more frizzy ends! I highly recommend this!

- Eslie is a very talented stylist. She really has a great vision and instinct for what would look good on you. She listens to you and is enthusiastic about your ideas and what you'd like. Eslie is very kind and easy-going. She is friendly and warm with a quiet, calm manner that is very relaxing and reassuring. The whole salon is very cozy, welcoming and charming. Renay is also very kind and positive. She has a great energy that is contagious. It just feels good to be there. It's a whole experience just being there and getting pampered. I love my new hairstyle! I had put off getting my hair cut and colored. I'd given up on it and just trimmed it myself and let it go gray. I was tired of the hassle. But Eslie helped me to get excited about my hair again and to have fun with it. She really listened to my concerns about the grays growing back so fast and colored my hair so beautifully with gorgeous high-lights and a warm, rich brown underneath. It is so pretty. And the blond on top with the high-lights really helps to camoflage the incoming grays so that I can get more wear out of it. I appreciate that Eslie listens and understands her clients concerns and wishes. I get compliments on my hair all the time! People say I look 10 years younger with my new hairdo. It makes me wish I hadn't put off doing it for so long. Also, I was so happy to be able to donate my long hair to Locks of Love and I got a $25.00 discount for donating it--which was very unexpected but a wonderful bonus! I definitely recommend this salon. I also had a wonderful massage and got 50% off being a new, 1st time client! It was amazing. A really fabulous experience. I will definitely be back!

- Carmen is amazing! I've had experiences with some good hair stylists, but she is the best by far. She takes time to listen to what you want and then really delivers. We tried a new, darker color for a more natural look and I absolutely love it. She also does a great job cutting curly hair so that it lays just right: springy up on top and light on the bottom (I was so tired of having a Christmas tree head!!). The best thing about the salon is that they truly GET curly hair; no shampoo, no blow drying, no silicone-based products. I highly recommend Carmen and Serendipity.

- Wonderful and easy and a great cut. Free Parking right at the salon (in downtown Ann Arbor, that is a plus) along with fresh coffee and a muffin. Very comfortable atmosphere at the salon, as Renay greets me with a big smile and remembers me from several years ago. So glad I found her again! She was able to take some very ratty ends and what was looking too much like a frizzy mess and transform it into a great look that I don't have to do anything with. It is completely wash and dry on the run. Tested it out the next day and yes, it is curling nicely, even in the humidity. It is still manageable, and I love the shape it gives to my face. Renay has been doing curly hair and training others to cut curly hair for years and it shows. So glad she decided not to retire!

- I am so glad I found Serendipity and Carmen! I have spent my whole life growing my curly hair out so that the weight would straighten it out, because that's what my straight-haired mom did to deal with it when I was a kid. Every stylist I ever went to before Carmen would say something like "oh, you have naturally curly hair, you poor thing," and I'd get talked into relaxing it, or just a trim. Blah! As soon as I walked in the door, Carmen knew what she wanted to do to my hair, and I love it, and it's super-cute. I am familiar with the feeling of walking out of a salon feeling good, and then having everything go back to blah a few days later, but it's been a couple of weeks now, and I'm still so happy with it. Carmen explained what she was doing, and how to keep styling my new hair on my own, and it's very easy. I know everyone has different hair, but you curly girls in Ann Arbor shouldn't be afraid to go put yourselves in Carmen's hands, you won't regret it.

Carmen is a very capable hairdresser and is the best curly hair cutter I have ever been to--her joy of curls makes it a pleasure to go to this stylist and salon!

- My experience at Serendipity was great. Carmen was very sweet and easy to talk to and she also thoroughly listened to what I requested for my haircut. Some stylists get scissor-happy and neglect to listen to the client's concerns but I do not think this is the case for Carmen. I have long 3c/4a hair and she gave my hair a much more attractive overall shape and yet maintained my overall length. The salon is very cute and small and has an overall very warm environment. The owner was also very kind as well. I thoroughly recommend Serendipity and Carmen for those who want a cut that both accommodates one's needs and improves upon one's own natural beauty. This salon is an Ann Arbor gem =)

- I was very excited for my haircut with Carmen after reading all of the reviews, however I was disappointed. After my cut my 3a hair was still flat and heavy on top. My previous hairstylist hand cut layers (piecing) in my hair, but Carmen only trimmed the bottom. Definitely too expensive for just a trim! My cut was $55. She listened to me but then she told me everything I was doing wrong. I already had a great grasp on working with my hair and i know what works and what doesn't. Warning: if you go to Carmen DONT ask her to straighten your hair. I usually love getting my hair blown straight at my haircut because it's a nice change that I never do myself, but Carmen is definitely opposed to changing the natural wave of your hair. But then I would ask why they dye hair at the salon?? Carmen is very knowledgeable and has some good ideas, but my hair and personality just doesn't mesh with her. Good luck!

- After reading about Carmen here at naturallycurly.com, I was so, so, SO excited to see what she would be able to do with my 2c hair. After years of resisting my natural curls by straightening my hair, I was finally ready to embrace my curls and a more natural hair care routine. I made an appointment for a cut with Carmen; and let me tell you, she definitely did not disappoint!! I have had countless bad cuts over the years and only a handful of goods one, but my cut with Carmen was exceptional. She knew exactly how to cut my hair so that my curls frame the shape of my head/face perfectly. Having had so many horror hair experiences over the years, getting a haircut would sometimes be a bit stressful for me. But not with Carmen! She did everything she could to explain what she was doing, make me feel comfortable and at ease, and most importantly, she listened to what I wanted and executed it to the T. What more could a curly girl want, really? Carmen taught me a new (lower) maintenace hair care routine, and she was able to make my hair curl like it has never curled before. It was clear to me she had both the knowledge and expertise required to work with textured hair. I'm very much looking forward to going back and learning even more from Carmen and the gals at Serendipity. I would hands-down recommend Carmen to any curly girl out there! She is truly a gem!!!

- Serendipity and Carmen are great! I was apprehensive about getting my hair cut (though I wasn't even going in for a real cut, more of a trim). I read about Serendipity and Carmen here on naturallycurly.com, and I decided to give it a shot. From the moment I walked in I knew it would be good. The location is great - colorful and peaceful. Right away Carmen got started asking me about my hair and what I wanted to do with it. She really listened to what I wanted, as well as offering her own ideas, but I felt no pressure to do anything. As Carmen was working on my hair, she explained everything she was doing in detail, and asking my permission, which really made me feel like we were on the same page. She really undertood my 3b/3c hair! My hair came out GREAT. I'm so happy with it! Carmen gave me her card at the end of my visit and told me to call her if anything unexpected came up, or I didn't like it the next day, or had any questions. Definitely recommend it.

- I got my Big Chop done by Carmen and she did an amazing job! I called in advance because after a year of growing a substantial amount of new growth, I wanted to make sure I was putting my new curls in good hands :) She talked with me for about 10 minutes answering all of my questions over the phone (which included "Can you cut 4A, kinky, coily hair?" In to which she replied, "yes, I love that texture!") and after answering everyone with much enthusiasm and knowledge, I knew for a FACT Serendipity was where I was going to go to get my tired relaxed ends cut off! She did an amazing job and she let me film the entire experience for my YouTube channel without any problems! She was also very, very sweet! After the experience was over, she called me a week later to "check on my curls and see how they were doing!" I mean c'mon! Who could ask for better service than that????

- I just had my first appointment with Carmen. I was greeted when I pulled up by the owner, Renay yelling "Welcome curly girl". I knew I was in the right place! LOL! Carmen took her time and talked with me about my hair, pros and cons, issues I have etc. She TOOK HER TIME!!! I wasn't rushed or intimidated. She explained the "no poo" way of life (which I am trying out) and gave her recommendations (without being pushy). She was very nice and LISTENED!!! She showed me a bunch of different tricks to style my hair. All together she spent an hour with me. I also had my daughter with me and she was SO sweet to her. Made her tea, played with sea shells with her. She is a cut above the rest (excuse the pun). It was hard to tell how great my cut was right away because it was beyond humid yesterday. But today after I washed and styled it (with her tips) it looks great and I am very please. It's a little shorter than I originally wanted, but the shape is so great that I really like it. THANKS CARMEN!

- I just moved to Ann Arbor and needed a stylist, and based on the reviews here I went to Carmen at Serendipity this morning for a trim. She is WONDERFUL! When I walked in, she actually sat down with me to talk about my hair -- the things I like about it, don't like, and what I wanted -- before getting me washed or even settled in the cutting chair. Not only did she not bat an eye at the no-poo thing, she actually RECOMMENDED it before I even mentioned it (in fact, she said that she herself has not used shampoo on her [naturally straight!] hair for two years!). As far as the trim, I told her that I'm trying to grow my hair out for my wedding next summer, and she was very conscientious about not taking off any more length than necessary. As soon as she said, "I'm going to cut your layers to match the shape of your head," I was sold. (She added, "I want your hair to cascade down like a waterfall!") My hair looks better than it has ever looked right now. I'm going back to Carmen next week for color. So happy to FINALLY have found a stylist who loves curly hair and knows what to do with it! Carmen repeatedly told me how gorgeous my hair was and how great it is that I don't straighten it. ♥ I would highly recommend her. The trim was $55.

I was also a little apprehensive of the "no poo" method, but my hair honestly feels AWESOME. And she didn't do anything to damage my hair, which sounds dumb, because you'd think that's the stylist's job, but she made sure to spray some no more tangles so she didn't have to yank a comb through my hair, and when she was done cutting she put me under a dryer so my hair could basically air dry. Before she cut we talked about my hair, everything I put in it, how I dry it, EVERYTHING! she was awesome. I highly recommend her.

- Having moved to Ann Arbor recently from Seattle, it has taken me awhile to land in the “right fit” salon. Have you ever had one of those experiences where you thought you had a particularly unique and savvy vision for how you would create something and then you encounter it? Despite having tracked professionally into a completely different arena, I have always had a still, small dream of pursuing my creativity through supporting women in expressing themselves through their appearance. Serendipity brings this vision to its superlative fruition. The environment is simultaneously artsy, professional, home-y and whimsical. Spending an afternoon at Serendipity is the equivalent of sharing some great hang-out time with your best girls plus the bonus of emerging from indulgence there looking fabulously YOU! This salon’s raison d’etre is to enhance and have fun with the real you, rather than make you over or into someone else. Carmen is a genius with my mane, previously referred to at other salons as: the thickest hair they’ve ever seen, enough hair for three human beings and an ape, double-booked for the time it requires, double-charged for all the extra product needed, etc. One of Carmen’s greatest attributes as a stylist is that she is a gifted listener. Carmen is also creative, positive and purposefully respectful of what I want. She communicates step by step before, during and after the cut/color. She is also tremendous in the same ways with my 4-yrs-old daughter and 6-yrs-old son. Carmen literally treats us as if we are her only clients when we are with her and invites both the kids and me to full expression of who we are as individuals. Her products are natural, healthy, enhancing. My wacky “Gene Wilder” (you know, the original Mr. Wonka) frizz is now a tussle of waves, ringlets and nobody-would-guess-it-color-integrated silver. I’ve gone from graying geekdom to groovalicious! Viva la Serendipity! --Nicole

Then, as we went through my salon experience, she explained every aspect of what she was doing, how to clean/condition my hair, how to dry it, and how to let it's natural beauty shine through! It was like a coaching session with a haircut. The cut was very refreshing, and my hair's bounce came back. I always feel like every salon makes you feel like you need to conform to the latest hair trends, whether it fits your genes or not. Why would you want to go to anywhere else, when there is a salon out there that wants to show how you naturally look beautiful? Thanks Carmen, and also thank you, Renay!

- I've been getting my hair cut by Carmen at Serendipity here for a year now, I wish I had discovered her sooner! I had a really bad haircut that I was trying to grow out. Carmen gave me a GREAT cut that worked with my naturally curly hair, and I've been going to her ever since. Hair stylists are always trying to straighten my hair, but not Carmen. She is fantastic. Her haircuts grow out really well, I mean they don't lose their shape fast. Not only is she very skilled but she is so friendly and nice. Love it!

- I was back in town for a few days (I recently moved to Chicago) and made sure to get an appointment with Renay. She got me to ditch the hair dryer a while ago, and go naturally wavey rather than straighten it. I have such a great fresh new city look, and no one in Chicago can tell I'm originally from suburbia. :-) This last visit, she gave me a wonderful cut as always, and freshened my color. I usually get some version of red, and she always does a great job, but this last time she hit it out of the park! It was such a vibrant red and the color lasted, and lasted. It was beyond my expectations. I think the tip about eliminating shampoo in the morning, and just using conditioner, helps keep the red from fading.

- I recently went to Serendipity for a cut. I found that the salon was very relaxing and both Megan and Renay were super nice, and made me feel welcome. Megan really seemed to know her stuff about curls, and she even mentioned the "Curly Girl" hairbook, and told me to try "not" washing my hair. However, I didn't really care for the way she cut my hair. There are shorter pieces here and there in my hair, and I do not like the way she layered it. I also found that my haircut was too overpriced. I paid $65 for a cut that really was just a trim. I really liked the salon, but not the cut.
