- I have never, in all my life, after visiting countless salons, had such a fabulous hair experience as I did at the East 42nd Street Salon with Carolyn. My temperamental sometimes dry sometimes moister rich thick 3b golden blond hair is the unlikely byproduct of my mother being a Swedish/Norwegian strawberry blond with lose curls and my father being African American with tight kinky black hair. Over the years I've visited countless stylists who've lost their heads completely when encountering my hair and have left with some pretty poor results. Not today! After searching for months and reading many rave reviews about the East 42nd Street Salon (and Carolyn in particular) I figured I'd give them a shot. Not only did she know EXACTLY what my hair needed to be the best it could be, she also shed light on a few pieces of- however well intended- bad advice I had always been given by my previous stylists. One tip was to always use silicone based conditioners ("To hold in the moisture") and another big tip was to listen for the "squeak" in your hair when shampooing to tell if its properly clean. Well, as it turns out and as demonstrated by Carolyn, the "squeak" you hear after shampooing with sulfate based shampoos that also contain detergents mixed in is the result of your hair being stripped entirely of its essential oils which only causes dry hair to become drier. Furthermore, while silicone based conditioners do initially hold in the moister by coating the hair shafts completely (assuming you haven't just stripped that hair of all its moister with your bad shampoo/cleanser), the layer of silicone will then effectively BLOCK and moisture from seeping into the core of the shaft. After consulting with me she proceeded to cut my hair dry (something I had never had done before) and introduced me to the Deva Curl line of silicone and sulfate-free hair care products. After the very first step of cleansing with the Deva Curl No-Poo cleanser I was hooked. My hair felt perfectly clean without the trade-off of feeling stripped. Next, Carolyn applied a small amount (about a third of the amount of the normal conditioner I would use) of of the Deva Curl conditioner and my hair was immediately saturated. As the rinse finished, we moved back to the chair where she then applied the newly released styling cream and my curls looked as they have never looked before; defined without massive amounts of hairspray, soft, bouncy, and- best of all- hydrated. To top it all off, I got EXACTLY the cut I wanted with upkeep instructions I mastered at home within five minutes. Really girls, don't live in doubt, just stop by the East 42nd Street Salon and prepare to be amazed. XOXO A new regular

- In January of 2011 I started using Deva products and trying to grow out my curly hair, which I'd kept very short (like above the ear) for most of my adult life. At about the end of September 2011 I decided it needed to be shaped, so I looked online and found this salon. I live FOUR HOURS AWAY but really wanted a Deva salon for a good curly cut. Laura did a great job and - no exaggeration - I got at least three compliments a day on my curls afterwards. At about the end of November I started to notice that the curls were starting to look straggly and not their best. I thought it was because my hair was getting too long - it's longer than I've ever been able to manage it in my life, due to the Deva products and the great cut from Laura - but I thought maybe I had reached the limit of how long I could get my hair and still have it look good. Laura wasn't available this time when i made the drive up, so I made an appointment with Styles. We talked about what I wanted and he said that it might just be the ends that needed to be trimmed, and that if it was okay with me, he'd try just cleaning them up a little before he took off the length that I suggested. Well, he was right - my hair looks great again, and I didn't have to sacrifice the length, so I can still keep going with my attempt to grow the hair out. Plus, his hair is very similar to mine, so we talked a lot about what works for our hair type and what doesn't, and played around with different techniques for "second day hair" before he cleansed and dried mine. It was a lot of fun, and I'd recommend either of them. I will never go back to a "regular" salon again.

- I've gone to Carolyn for curly cuts a few times now and she's a curl genius. She's a real pro at cutting, coloring and styling curly hair. I am always blown away when she finishes and lets me take a look at it from all sides. A good cut really makes a difference and she's the one to go to for such a cut if you're a curly. Plus she's easy to talk to, listens carefully to her clients and the salon is a beautiful space. This is such a treat to go from years of not being able to trust any stylist with my hair — no one ever knew how to handle it — to having a local treasure like Carolyn.

- I have short fine curly hair that has always been difficult. The flat iron was my best friend but then I got tired of it breaking off so I went CG for 6 months before I found east 42nd salon but my hair was still dry and breaking. So I thought a deva cut! It's always nerve wracking trying a new stylist but the staff is very curteous and welcoming. After a great consultation Theresa informs me that what I really need is some good product and that given I wanted to grow my hair out she recommended I wait for a haircut. I was astounded! Beyond this I was given a great tutorial on how to care for my hair. That first day my hair looked better than ever. I go in every 4weeks for oxygenation and my hair is growing and healthy. I finally like my curly hair. Theresa is fantastic

- I have been seeing Teresa for over a year. Before I started going to Teresa, I had a very bad experience where someone chopped my hair into "long layers" that were about 4" from the part of my hair. Definitely not long layers! So, I was very hesitant to try someone new, but having moved from out of town I had to find someone to cut my hair. I read reviews on naturallycurly and other sites and found Teresa. I have never walked out of Teresa's chair feeling like she cut too much. For a long, curly-haired girl, that is a huge relief. Sometimes, though, I think she may have cut too little. Of course, she always asks how much I want to "take off," and I never want a lot of length cut, but I always tell her if it needs more, to cut. I want my hair to be healthy and I don't want split ends. At this point, my hair has grown a bit too long and I will likely ask for her to cut more - if I am that brave! Teresa does some amazing semi-permanent color on me. It makes my hair less frizzy and more shiny. Who could ask for more? The color is a bit pricey though, at about $100. The cut is $70. I highly recommend Teresa for any curly girl and have shared her name with my friends. I live pretty far from the salon, but it's well-worth the trip. If you live in the Twin Cities or are visiting, a visit to E. 42nd Street Salon should be in your future!

- Carolyn has consistently amazed me with her intuitive approach to my loose curls. I've never had a bad hair cut from her. I thought bad hair cuts were the norm for someone with curly hair, but no! She listens intently to what I want, and is honest with me about what my hair will and will not do, which I interpret as respect for me and pride in her own work. She doesn't want me to leave dissatisfied and have to live with bad hair for the next 3 months. As long as she is available, I will keep returning to her. Good job, Carolyn!

- How could anyone like their curly hair?Growing up in the 60's--the denizon of STRAIGHT hair--I was a hair-outcast with my very curly hair. It stuck in my psyche that hair had to be STRAIGHT to be beautiful. But frankly, after 60 years of fighting it, I was tired of the battle! But I didn't want to look like Shirley Temple or Little Orphan Annie, which is whatt I usually looked like when I left a salon and hadn't persuaded/bribed them to flat iron my hair. I was pretty sure I was going to take the plunge into a lifetime of the Brazilian Keratin straightening when I went to a consult with Carolyn. But she convinced me to try the Curly Cut, in which she is also well trained, and all things to manage the thick curly/frizzy mop I was born with. Instead of treating my hair like it she would straight hair, she cut it to work with my curls and taught me the error of my ways with products and drying and scrunching, etc. I wasn't entirely convinced the first two weeks but I stopped back to pick up something and she swept me into her chair and gave me some new tricks for managing my hair the "day after" washing it that really work! It's hard to teach an old dog like me new tricks, but I'm more convinced now that I can learn to love my curls (most others seem to!) and spend a lot less time messing with it. I even spent several hours riding with the top down on my car, no pony tail, and my hair looked great with very minimal rescrunching. That's a first! So far, pretty good and willing to stick with a while longer. Now if I could just be a redhead.

- Here is my experience. Nice salon, friendly and professional staff, but the haircut was not what I'd been told I'd get. I told Carolyn I was looking for a cool, funky style but didn't want too lose a lot of length. We decided on shoulder length. I left with my hair just below my ears. Sure I got complements, but I was so disappointed. I thought I'd get used to it but never did. I canceled my 6 week later appointment. I want to cry. I thought I had finally found someone who could help with my sparse, thin, locks. Now I have to go through the long, irritating process of growing it out again.

- This wasn't just a haircut; it was an education! Sam took loads of time dry-cutting each curl at just the right point so they hang nicely instead of bushing out like a shrub. Then she washed and conditioned my hair, instructing me every step of the way so I could do it correctly at home. After that, she trimmed the curls a second time to make sure everything was just right. Most of the stylists at this salon have been trained in the Massey way of curl cutting (she wrote the book, "Curly Girl"), so they really know what they're doing. Sam treated my curls like they were delicate little flowers; she was so careful and respectful! They sent me home with shampoo & conditioner samples, which was a nice bonus. Once I figure out which works best, I'll go in and buy. Be warned though: because they take so much pride in what they do, my cut took an hour and 50 minutes, but it was worth it! Thanks Sam!

- First, let me say that this salon is lovely. Everyone is friendly and attentive and there are a variety of services available so you're covered if you need a brow wax and a cut or color. Second, my experience with Sam was wonderful. She taught me so much about caring for my curls, from washing to styling, and answered all my questions. She took great care with the Curly Cut itself. I've never had a stylist give so much attention to each individual curl! My color experience was also great. She did a pintura, which involves literally painting each curl. It was very cool and the effect is much more vibrant and true to life than the all-over colors I've had previously. Unlike other color jobs I've had, when it was finished, my hair looked natural, like my regular hair, only better! Last, she did an updo on me that was beautiful, which I couldn't imagine was possible! I left the salon feeling great and everyone has complimented me on my curls. I love my cut and color and feel like I've got a stylist who truly understands what it's like to have curly hair and how to bring out the best in it. I booked another appointment and look forward to having Sam work her artistic magic on my hair again. I would highly recommend both Sam and the East 42nd Street Salon to any Curly Girl in the Mpls./St. Paul area!

I apparently have fine hair (never knew this)but it is thick and I have tons of hair. I also don't get my hair cut more than 2-3 times a year because I've had one too many bad cuts, but not any more! I love my hair, although it turned out a little shorter than I wanted, I've had tons of compliments. Carolyn took time to explain the "how-to's" of styling and what to use and I am slowly learning. Of course, after she styled it, it looked fabulous for 3 days without me needing to wet it)but now I am trying to do it with not as much success, but each passing day I get better. I walked out of the place looking absolutely ridiculous. In top of that I asked for a trim and got a buzz cut in the back. If I had asked for that type of cut - then it would have been ok - minus the crazy way my hair was styled, but I did not ask for that type of cut, so I was very dissatisfied. When I called to request all or a portion of my money back, I was told I would get a refund of $10 because I was mistakenly overcharged $10, but that would be it. - I'm 53 and up to last year have had maybe 12 haircuts I didn't do myself. I gave up on going to salons after several disasters. My hair is very tight curls but fine. When it's wet I look like I'm balding. I recently got a job where I need to look professional. I despaired of every having suitable hair but decided to try Carolyn at East Street. We talked about what I wanted and frankly, I didn't know. I asked her to do what she thought best. She did a dry cut and chose a shape I'd never considered before. Then she showed me how to work with it. I got more compliments on my hair in the next few months than I have in my life time. I can hold my own with the "power cuts" at work. I'm still learning how to handle it, but I love it. I don't live in Minneapolis and have to drive a ways to get a cut but it's well worth it. My sister and son (also curlies) go to Carolyn as well. - I wanted to try out the Deva cut so I decided to give this salon a try because there are no Deva trained stylists in Wisconsin where I live, and this salon was the closest to my parents' house in Eau Claire. I really enjoyed my experience. The salon is in a cute little neighborhood and has a really fun and funky style. The staff was all SO friendly and welcoming, they really made you feel like they really appreciated your business. Laura is very nice and took a lot of time to look at my hair and ask me what I liked and didn't like about it, how I usually styled it, what kind of products I used, and really seemed to take the time to study my curl pattern. She suggested the Deva products at the checkout but did not push or do a hard sell. She even gave me a free sample of the Heaven in Hair (thank goodness, 'cause my hair really hated it). The only weird thing is that it took about a week for my hair to settle into the cut, but I don't think that had anything really to do with how she cut it, I think it had more to do with the dry winter weather and taking hats and hoods on and off all the time. Today my hair looks great! Someday when I have the money, I would like to go back and try the Pintura highlighting. Overall really great experience and I would definitely go back, and I definitely recommend Laura!

- After three cuts with Theresa, I have decided to go elsewhere. Pros: weekend hours; neighborhood proximity; focus on curly hair Cons: didn't listen to what I wanted; poor communication skills; dull environment; uncomfortable lobby area; not very welcoming I had been looking for someone to replace my most favorite hair stylist who moved to California. She had loved my thick and wavy hair and always gave me a cut that left me feeling attractive and sexy. Tough act to follow, I know, but after searching the web, I found positive reviews of the East 42nd Street Salon and thought I would give them a try. First cut: My very thick shoulder length 2C hair was long overdue for a cut that would free my curls and waves. She appeared skeptical and almost reluctant to cut my hair - not a good vibe or introduction to her salon! I should have taken that as a sign to pass from the beginning but I persevered I was able to negotiate a cut that kept the length but added layers and movement. 2nd cut after six weeks: I returned for a second cut and Theresa expressed surprised at how much my hair does wave and curl. I encouraged her to repeat what she had done in the first cut although I noticed she took off more than I wanted all over. 3rd cut after 5 weeks: I mentioned that the top layers were too long and clumped above my ears two weeks into the previous cut. She asked if she could take an inch off and I responded yes, that would be about the length of the new growth. Little did I know that that answer gave her license to take many inches off and to turn my shoulder length hair into short hair! How unfortunate that I had my glasses off and couldn't see what she was doing during the cut. Her excuse was she that she needed to cut everything short in order to make the top layers shorter.

So I called to make another appointment. When I went back she quickly made a few cuts. - Theresa has been my stylist for perhaps 15 years. I've lost count of the years and the compliments. My curly hair was never complimented until Theresa taught me how to use the appropriate products for it. Plus her advice on cut and color has always been superb. Her knowledge is phenomenal, and she continues to further her training in all facets of hair care. As a teacher I can really appreciate that. She deserves credit for the great work being done at E.42nd St. Salon.

- After reading all the raving reviews on here, I just had to try Carolyn out. I've never had a dry cut before, but it was nice. No wetting my hair and pulling out my hair with a fine-tooth comb. She cuts each curl individually while it's dry, then used the DevaCurl products to cleanse, condition & style. I was waiting a lot since she was working on another client at the same time. She gave me a ton of good tips. However, I'm still not sure about my hair cut. Maybe I just have to get used to it. I said I wanted it layered, but it's REALLY layered and feels thinner, kind of shaped like a V down my back. I'll see how it goes, my hair grows fast. I might have to try one of the other curly hair specialists mentioned on this site- Carolyn is expensive because she is advanced and Deva trained. But I may end up going back to her-sometimes you get what you pay for.

- Carolyn is awesome!!! I am biracial and my hair is super curly (like Racheal True's) so I was a little concerned initially. Carolyn did an awesome job and it's probably the best haircut I've had in 30 years! She really is a curly hair specialist!! Not to mention it was fun to see one curly-haired person come out of the chair, only to be replaced my another. Hooray for Carolyn!!

- Carolyn is by far the Twin Cities' expert on curly hair (and I've tried others recommended here). She cuts dry, and cuts curl by curl. Deva-trained, I believe. She's given me the best curly hair I've ever had. And she's lots of fun, to boot!

- I hunted through about half a dozen salons before settling on the particular one and this particular stylist. My requirements were simple: stylist must have curly hair. Stylist must not under any circumstances try to talk me into a style I do not want (I've had one Oops me into a cut before). I checked out this place beforehand and it's beautiful. It's spacious, the hair wash sinks and incredibly comfortable, the staff is attentive and friendly and for cutting, the price was very reasonable. Carolyn was a joy. She's given me the first hair cut in almost ten years that I love. We talked for a while to figure out what I wanted done (shaping and removal of a some of the bulk, I have three feet of hair) and the results were dazzling. I recommend her highly.

- She is wonderful. Carolyn changed my hair color from dark red to strawberry blond. It looks fabulous and fun. She understands the nature of color and thick curly hair. She regularly checked the progress on different parts of my head because she knew that that time it took to color one part was time for another part to develop. My color is even and full of dimension. I will be going back in a few months for a touch up, trim, and shape. Yay Carolyn!

- Carolyn is a deva trained stylist and gave me the first hair cut I've ever had (since embracing my curls)that made me happy. I've followed other recommendations here and was always disappointed. She cuts each individual curl and then styles your hair giving you step by step instructions so you feel confident knowing you can do the same thing at home. She is so far above anyone else that has ever touched my curls. She told me she knew there was more to curls than she had ever been taught and was willing to go learn it, and boy did she!! Give her a try! It was my first day in over 38 years of having fat, frizz free, touchable curls.
