- I had not been to a salon in over two years. I had resorted to trimming myself. I did some research on curly hair and found the Curly Girl handbook. I found that Joy had been trained by Lorraine Massey that wrote the Curly Girl handbook. My experience was what I had always wanted. Absolutely geared to curly girls. I learned more about the steps in caring and styling my hair. Thank you Joy.

- I have been getting my haircut for years at the Devaschan Salon on Broome St in NYC. I moved to the South and I am so happy I found Joy Rudisill. I had an appointment in NYC cancelled due to one of their snowstorms and hadn't had a haircut in 7 months! Joy taught me about the pineapple to wear at night and about Mister Right and allowing my curls to "set" just like if I were to wear hot rollers. She also taught me how to pin my hair up to avoid thinning hair due to suffocating the roots day after day wearing a pony tail. I learned so much and I have implemented all of it and I am so happy with the results. Thank you Joy!!! I'll be back!!! We Southerners (or "transplanted yankees" depending on the audience) are so lucky to have you.

- I was a mess. I had been seeing a stylist for over 20 years and having my hair bleached and pulled straight. My Hair was FRIED. After several months of begging my stylist to do something different, I started looking for a new stytlist. This was a very difficult decision but I had no choice. A friend at work with very curly hair had recommened Joy to me and said that she had changed her life. I was all for that. I went to see Joy in April of 2010 and Iam so happy that I did. My hair looks so much better. People stop me and ask if they can touch my hair. I have ringlet curls. They are so soft and my hair looks so healthy. Joy thanks for helping me embrace my Curls. I just love them.

Now it actually has a shape and doesn't just hang down in my face the way it used to. I've also watched her work miracles on people with wildly curly manes. Bravo! 5 stars from Me!

- Joy continues to amaze me with the miracles she works with my hair. I had been blow-drying my hair as straight as possible for years, and when I let it dry on its own it was so straight in spots I thought it would be impossible to ever have curls in those areas again. Joy not only gave me a great cut, but also taught me how to nurse my hair and curls back to health and keep them that way. I’ve gotten compliments ever since. Joy always asks what I have in mind, tells me whether or not that will work for my type curls, offers suggestions when I ask, and clearly explains exactly what she’s doing and the effect it will have. Joy is a true professional. I highly recommend her.

Before Joy, I used to blow dry my hair straight most days (which took forever) and only dared to go curly when the humidity left me no choice. Now, I wear it curly 99.9% of the time and love it!! The way she cuts your hair curl by curl really makes a difference. She also teaches you how to use the Deva products, which I love. Highly recommend for any curly girl/guy!!

- Joy at Joyfully Curly in Charlotte is the only stylist I trust with my curls! Before finding her, I would always leave a salon with a) a mediocre haircut, and b) hair that was either crazy frizzy and not curly (because they wouldn't know how to style it) or just dripping wet (so I could avoid the embarassment and just style it myself at home). She really knows how to get the most out of your natural style with the Deva cut and styling products. I get SO many compliments on my hair when I leave her salon, even from complete strangers. My curls are shiny, healthy-looking, and lay perfectly without being too heavy or 'big'. I highly recommend Joyfully Curly for anyone wanting to see just how great their curls can look. - Joy showed me that I do have some natural curl and I can use it to my advantage. I had always been told that my hair was stick straight and fine. Joy showed me that it can have natural wave and body if it is cut right and styled with the right products. And I have seen her turn other women's frizzy manes into sophisticated styles that require minimal care. I was pretty sceptical when she first told me she was going to New York to learn a new way of cutting curly hair. But she showed me that it does work. Her training with Deva in New York has made her a far better stylist in every way. Her extended training since then, and her experience as a specialist in curly hair in the last few years have convinced me to recommend her to any of my friends who wrestle with their naturally curly locks.

My grandaughter (also a curly girl) suggested that I embrase my curls; she was only 4 at the time. Joy has styled my curly hair for years now. Her talent and careful attention to detail with her "curly girl" cuts and styling allow me much more time to enjoy my life. Everywhere I go I am stopped and told how beautiful my hair is. I do not color it and am a Summer so I am quite platinum. It simply glissens. It is wonderful to have free georgeous tresses that are the envy of most everyone. Last week I was at my sister's home in Charleston, SC. Her son David Mullis is an award winning hair stylist. He told me I looked beautiful. He said I looked the best he has ever seen me. He is 39 years old. He told me my hair is wonderful. That I have a perfect cut and color. It really works for me. What a compliment to Joy and to me. I am so lucky to have found Joy and she sure has given me a joyfully curly outlook when it comes to my hair. Thank you Joy!!!

- I have experienced so many salons in Charlotte. From the high-end and even chasing some previously favored hair stylist down to the bottom-end, I have had them all. Joy was the first person to really understand the dream I was chasing. She took the time to advise me on care, color, routine and made me feel like she cared. Joy even advised me on letting my hair go back to natural as I had very few grays. Never has a stylist told me to go that route before. My previous stylist of 5 years helped me to maintain a nearly platinum blonde (btw I am level 5 brown naturally) until he changed salons; started using bad color or worse stopped giving a darn. Its been assessed that he kept painting the peroxide over my ends and as I thought I needed touch-ups, I allowed him to do so. Then I went through a few stylists until I found Joy. She has curly hair and a lot of it. Joy is beautiful and a model for the type of curly girl I want to become. I appreciate her outward appearance and she is helping me to appreciate mine. My cut is great and I almost always can gel it and go. In my world that is exactly the way I want it.

- Before finding Joy, I'd been to stylist after stylist (a few in the Charlotte area) claiming to be curly experts, but I always got the same result: layers that resulted in super thin, scraggly curls at the bottom and a triangle on the top. Think 70s. When I found joyfullycurly.com and read about the Deva concept, I was intrigued to learn that Deva stylists cut hair while it's dry so they can see the shape of the curls as they cut each one by one. They treat curly hair differently from straight hair from the beginning! I visited Joy for my first Deva cut two years ago, switched to the DevaCurl product line, and haven't looked back. My curls are thick all the way to the bottom. No more layers! Joy helped me grow my hair super long. I haven't had hair this long since I was little because in the past, it didn't curl right once it got past my shoulders! Now I have a head full of long, soft, shiny curls that haven't seen lather or sulfates in years. Joy is the reason I love my hair now!

I told her that I do like to straighten my hair too; it is just easier for me when I run, and I don't have to fuss with it every day when I blow it out. So, I wanted the best of both worlds. What did I get??? Total frustration. When it is curly it is completely frizzy on top, and I know how to use Deva products. I have been using for over 1 year. The top is just a mess. Today I decided to straighten it for the first time since the cut and UGH!! The top is a disconnected mess and the cut looks horrible. The best I can do is put in a ponytail or put it up and wait for it to grow. I will never get a Deva cut again. I should have stuck with my stylist who knew how to cut my curly hair for both looks. In praise of Joy, she does know her products and explains everything very well, but for me, it is not worth the $94 price and two-hour car drive both ways.

- "Joyfully curly" is the perfect name for my experience over the past two years as a client with Joy Rudisill at her salon...joyfully curly. After years id stylists trying to cookie-cutter style my curly hair...I found Joy and was introduced to the DevaCare products, as well as a fabulous curly cut every time! Two years of Joy's hair styling and using the products has kept my hair in super condition, and Joy always patiently updates my education on how to keep my hair wonderfully curly and soft. I discovered that my hair actually responds to using the specific products which Joy suggested to best meet my curly girl needs. Joy does the expert cut and the products condition and manage my hair to curl joyfully! Whenever I have had a question about any of the products or the cut, Joy has always assisted me in understanding the why's and how's of maintaining my hair. Thanks Joy for offering your fabulous hair-styling and products in the Charlotte area!

- After three years of mediocre haircuts at the "best" salons in Charlotte, I am so very happy to have finally found Joy! It's not just that she knows how to cut curly hair; she's an excellent all around stylist. I went in with a long list of things I didn't want (not too bushy! not too short! not too round! not triangular! not in my face!); she listened patiently, looked at pictures with me to make sure she knew what I liked and didn't, and then gave me a fantastic cut that looks adorable (and not just the day I left the salon; it looks just as good when I do it at home). Same thing with color; she spent a long time looking at samples and making recommendations about how to get the look I wanted, and then gave me the best color I've had in a long while (bonus: she uses the Kuene line, which has nice staying power and is easy on my hair). The salon itself is pretty and convenient to most of Charlotte (Sharon Amity at Monroe), and the prices are consistent with most good salons in town. A great experience & a great haircut - highly recommended!

- I got my hair cut today, and I love it!! First, the salon is VERY nice. She is very professional, and best of all--she did a great job. I was very very happy with the whole process. The cut. She customizes everything to your individual hair needs. It was just great. She showcases the Deva products (the line by Lorraine Massey), instructs and uses them on your hair. I bought the travel kit for starters, I really did like the products. I really like the cut, its sassy and sophisticated, and I may even be able to wear my favorite earrings again because my hair is shorter--yay (they used to get tangled up). http://www.joyfullycurly.com Its a full service salon and spa. I plan on going back for a massage. The place is REALLY nice! Yeah, she was good. She cuts your hair dry. She cuts each curl individually. She dried me under the dryer for a few, then used a diffuser. You'll be happy with the process, for sure. - I went to Joy about a week ago. She is the first curl specialist I have been to. She gave me the best haircut of my life. She took the split ends off and cut with the curl so the curls sat better. She then cleansed with devacurl no poo, conditioned with one condition, left b'leave in in, and styled with Angell. My hair was lookin' fly! I drove an 1hr and a half to get to her because I live in SC and her salon is in Charlotte, NC, but it was well worth it. She was also very gentle with my dry, tangly, coarse 3b hair. Oh yeah, I was in doubt at first because I didn't think she had much experience with ethnic hair, but she proved me wrong. If you have curly hair and live near charlotte, nc I would definitely recommend going to her!

- I just had my first curly girl haircut yesterday. Joy went to Devachan salon in NY city for training. Devachan Salon is owned by Lorraine Massey who wrote CURLY GIRL. Joy gave me the best haircut that I have ever had. She cut my hair dry as soon as I arrived at the salon. Next she washed my hair and explained the best washing and condtioning process. Then she showed me the best way to style my hair, then she let me sit under the hood dryer and relax while my hair dried. After it was dry she checked the cut and made sure there were no hairs or curls out of place. It was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend her! I will be going back to see her again!
