Anson is AWESOME!!! After dozens of haircuts from different stylists all around the world, I can honestly say that Anson is the best at cutting my curly hair. He cuts it dry, which most of the stylists I've had don't do, and it turns out great every time. If I could, I'd give him more than 5 scissors!

I absolutely LOVE this guy!!!! Yeah I'm a man, but its hard finding someone else who isn't a jerk and cuts curly hair, AND at a great price! So I go in there, and I have to wait about 10 minutes, but do I care? Nope. He had all these interesting magazines laid out for people waiting, and I loved to see his dog Woody (but do be careful with him, he is shy). I am not upset I had to wait, cutting hair takes time, and I'm glad to see him take his time with his other customer, instead of maniacally butchering off her hair. So when he calls me in, he was very friendly. I am a shy person, and he started conversation and somehow managed to get me to talk, that's a first with many people. I was just blown away. Now, as I read the other reviews, the first thought that pops into my head is "What? How could you possibly say that? He's better than almost every hair stylist in Raleigh, and I am the one who would know. If you carefully read the details of that other womans review, look at the details. She says she was like 40 minutes late to her appointment, and Anson was a tad upset. I would be ANGRY if that was me, so I don't blame Anson. Also, this woman CONSTANTLY brings up that she had a baby, yeah you and like 2 billion other people on this planet. I really don't care what the other reviews say, this is a great man. He is kind and thoughtful, and can actually start a friendly conversation. You guys reading this need to go see this man,Anson, you'll see what I mean.

I have been searching for quite awhile for someone who can cut curly hair and fortunately I found Anson. He is one of the few people who cuts hair dry. He spends a lot of time figuring out the best cut for your hair and your preferences. His quiet, unassuming manner make him very easy to work with. I trust him with my hair and have had great results. Thanks Anson.

The first time I went to see Anson I went in for a cut and thin. I get the same hair cut no matter where I go and it really isn't that complicated. It just takes someone who understands curly hair to be able to do it. On this trip I thought he did a pretty good job of reading my curls and cutting them into a nice style. He cut me dry which I really liked. The only issue I had was that I specifically said I need to be able to pull it into a pony tail since I was about to have a baby and would need the convenience. He did not listen. He cut it right at my jawline. However, I was really pleased with the shape of my hair so I decided to go back again. Well, I shouldn't have. The second cut was probably the worst hair cut I have ever had. I will admit that I was running late for the hair cut (I had just had a baby 10 days prior and was running around trying to get a cut before my mom left me alone with the baby). He seemed to be a little disgruntled about me being late. The hair cut looked as if he had never cut curly hair before. I can hardly describe everythign that was wrong with this hair cut. He started by first cutting the length and then put in one layer. Just one and it say right at my ear line. When I told him that I would also like to have it thinned out. He put the hair on top of my head into a rubber band and randomly jabbed his scissors into my hair and snipped. He did somethign similar to the length of my hair too. I have never seen this method before and hope to never see it again. I am not sure how a stylist can get either 1 scissors or 5 scissors. It appears that his clients either love him or hate him. I have to wonder if he just gets in cranky moods and they impact his hair cutting. Regardless, I am not willing to roll the dice and chance another cut with him. It has taken 3 haircuts and 8 months to recover from what he did to my head.

Anson is the BEST stylist EVER!!!!! I just discovered this awesome website courtesy of one of my curlie girlie friends and must tell you about the greatest stylist in the Raleigh-Durham area--ANSON HOWARD!!!!! I have been going to Anson regularly (about three times a year) for over 6 years. I will never go to anyone else!!!! Not only does Anson have an exceptional knowledge of how to effectively and beautifully cut, color, and style curly hair, he has a ridiculously comprehensive knowledge of hair, period!!!!! I have the most difficult hair ever--I'm a 3b with some kinks. Anson is so thoughtful when he's cutting hair-whether you get a trim or a drastic cut (which I switch all the time. I also switch my color up and Anson always impresses!). Anson not only listens to EVERYTHING you want or are concerned about, he talks you through the process and tells you every detail you would ever need to know about your particular hair type. Anson is also really knowledgeable about the current trends in color, changes in hair protection technology, and the latest products (he's always fully stocked with great products to try! He even uses the newest ones on you in the chair!!) For those of you with non-curly friends or relatives, I'm the only one in my family with curly hair. My mom, brother, and uncle, who all have different hair types, have been going to see Anson for 6 years as well and are ALWAYS happy! I live in Columbia, South Carolina and gladly drive the 3.5 hours to have Anson do my hair. Because his prices are so reasonable for the services you get, I can travel to see him and keep up with my style. PS: Anson's salon is adorable: it's decorated with modern art and he always has really mellow, chill music in the background. Anson is hilarious and super fun to talk to. He's a sweetheart and really cares about his customers. He truly is the best stylist in Raleigh!!!

CAVEAT EMPTOR: When I arrived at the salon for my scheduled appointment I had to wait 40 minutes. I decided to bring a picture of the type of haircut/shape I wanted. When I tried to explain to Anson how I wanted my haircut he caught a "diva attitude" (mumbling I can tell what you want from the picture). Well my curly 3c/biracial hair that I grew out for a year past my collar bone is now located 1 inch below my ear. The hair on the very top of my head is about 3-4 inches. I can't even pull my hair back in a pony tail or bun b/c the sides are so short. So what is the easiest way to fix a hair disaster like this? I went and got a sew-in weave. When Anson cut my hair he never asked how much hair I wanted cut off. He just took the scissors and chopped about 4 inches off of the side. Maybe it was my fault and I should have specified cut off only an inch. However, a trained professional doesn't just go and cut INCHES of someone’s hair off without asking. Who the hell in their right mind does that? When I talked to another hairstylist she told me that the first thing they learn in Cosmo 101 is ask the client how much hair they want taken off and once they cut a piece to ask if that is okay or if they want more. Not just to go and start chopping up a clients head. Even the stylist who put in my weave was like "what happened to your hair" and" why would someone put layers that short on the sides and back". This experience really upset me. When I went home I tried to style my hair and the only way I could wear it was in a small curly fro. I was so annoyed and angered that I ended up crying. I couldn’t straighten my hair since he cut it dry using his sculpting method. My hair is totally uneven and eventually will need to be cut even out the ends. I propably need a good 7 months to grow it out in order to pull it back. All I can say to old customers and future customers is just specify to this man how much hair you want taken off and the style you want even if he gives you a diva like attitude.

I just got my first Anson Howard haircut, and I must say that I was really impressed! He took over an hour to cut my hair, and when he made a cut he would examine the look from multiple different angles. He cut my hair dry, and he picked up on my hair's... eccentricities... without me even having to outline them for him!! It was such a pleasant change from my usual salon experience, where I tell the stylist that the hair closest to my neck is just straighter than the rest, so they shouldn't layer it too dramatically in the back because the differences in curliness will take care of that on its own! I have always had to chop away at that layer of my hair after I get a haircut because of the stylist not paying attention, but I didn't have to TOUCH this haircut. It was a wonderful experience!! P.S. I noticed that Anson Howard has 1 scissor as his rating, but I would just like to point out that that is only because the rating system was only introduced with the last reviewer, who seems to have had a quite uncommon experience with Anson. I think that it is misleading, because while it states that there are 12 reviews, it comes across that all of his reviews were poor because of one person's bad experience.

This was one of the most uncomfortable experiences I have had in a salon in a long time. I recently moved to NC from CA and have been in search of a stylist. As he was highly recommended on here, I was willing to drive the 2 hours it took to get to him. As it so happened, traffic was very smooth and I arrived about 45 minutes early. I told them I knew I was very early and had no problem waiting for my time. After a few minutes, Anson brought me back to the chair and I explained what I was looking for. He agreed to cut it dry, but then proceeded to comb out my dry hair, and cut it from a bushy, frizzy mess. As others raved about him on here, I thought maybe I was just experiencing a different method from the dry cuts I was used to. Shortly after he began cutting, a walk-in regular customer came in who Anson said comes in weekly to get his hair trimmed up. The minute he acknowledged this person, I felt he began rushing through my cut and paying more attention to what was going on in the front of the salon than with me. He finished a very quick cut, didn't explain anything to me about hair styling (thank goodness I already knew basics of curls), sprayed my hair with a water bottle, rubbed some random product in my hair, and sent me on my way. WTF?! My hair didn't even look any different than when I walked in (I took before and after shots). Had I known I was going to be made to feel like such an inconvenience to him, I would have never bothered.

Anson is the best!!! I have been all over the RDU looking for a stylist to cut my 3c hair. I think the voyage will finally end at Howard Jacobs Salon. Anson gave me a super cute layered bob with the perfect shape. It was the EXACT look I envisioned and I've gotten TONS of compliments! He was very friendly and was very specific to come back if something just didn't look right. His technique is different, as he approaches cutting curly hair to 'trimming hedges", but the end result is a masterpiece!

I just had a keratin treatment with him and he has changed my life. He cut my hair when I had it curly and did an excellent job, and I had talked to him about how badly I wanted straight hair. He talked to me about the keratin treatment and a few weeks later I was back to give it a try. I LOVE it!!!!!! I'm glad I found Anson and my search for the "holy grail" stylist is over!!!! A friend went to Anson after she found him on this site and highly recommended him. I went yesterday and had my hair cut as well as highlighted for the first time in 5 years. I pretty much gave him free reign after I mentioned the reasons I hadn't highlighted it in so long. He paid attention to that and did an amazing job! I keep getting compliments! I love it and his very reasonable prices are going to allow me to keep it up on a regular basis. Anson took his time on my hair, which I liked, because many times stylists can rush you out. The salon itself is adorable, relaxing, and the staff is super friendly. I now highly recommend him!

I recently took the advice of some of the other curlies on this site and made an appointment with Anson at Howard Jacobs salon. I have to say, I like my curly 3b hair in the winter, but in the summer I absolutely hate it. I have a ton of hair and the NC humidity makes it 3x bigger. After venting to Anson he suggested a Keratin treatment. I had researched this treatment prior and considered it out of my reach because of the price. Well, since Anson's prices were so reasonable and he seemed so knowledgeable, I said "Go For It". My hair was colored, highlighted, straightened (Keratin treatment) and cut today. Wow, what a difference!! My hair looks (and feels) FANTASTIC!! And the deal Anson gave me on all of these services was nothing less than phenomenal. I think he was as excited as I was with the transformation. This was the best salon experience I have ever had (which says a lot). I am not only grateful, I am extremely impressed. Like I said, I love curly, but this change is wonderful. I had such a great time today (the entire staff is very friendly) and I am honestly looking forward to my next appointment.

I just got back from the best salon experience I have ever had, bar none! Getting a haircut used to be even more stressful than the dentists' and I HATED it. That is, until I found this wonderful site. I love the product and care suggestions and most particularly love the salon suggestions. I have lived in Raleigh for a few years now and have hopped from stylist to stylist until recently finding Anson through this site. I had little trouble getting an appointment, and Tony even called to remind me of my appointment. Anson has curly hair himself and I felt this added a lot to his understanding of my particular needs. I knew when he suggested we cut my hair dry that he knew more about curls than most other places I'd been. Anson took lots of time with me, giving me hair care and styling tips and a wonderful deep-conditioning treatment. I agree with the other posters, the salon has a cool, laid-back vibe and Tony is such a sweetheart. He even went out in the cold and got me a hot cup of coffee and a Valentine's doughnut from the Krispy Kreme up the street! As I was leaving, another curly girl from this site was coming in. All this and it was super cheap by Raleigh standards. I will be recommending Anson to all of my friends, curly or not!

Anson has done an outstanding job on my "3C" curly, frizzy, hair. I echo the comments of the other reviewers. I am getting compliments from friends and strangers. I feel great, and love the style. It is so hard for hairdressers to style curly hair. I wanted something that looked styled, not just a like a bunch of curls doing their own thing in a boring shape. Anson did a great job styling my hair, and letting the natural curl come to life at the same time. He also colored my hair - I was afraid to get it colored for the first time ever. It looks natural and beautiful. The salon is very "metro" and the fabric artwork on the walls is fabulous - Anson is the artist! You should definitely give him a try.

Being the native that he is, he can tell you everything you need to know about it. OK, my hair is stick straight and baby fine, but I think it's just as challenging as curly hair. I'm 50 years old, have lived in many metropolitan areas of the US, and I can honestly say that Anson is the first person who has cut and colored my hair exactly the way I want it. He takes the time to make sure that your hair color complements your skin tone and eye color. My haircut is so adorable that people stop me on the street and ask who does it.
