By base, I mean the first couple of inches at the very bottom perimeter. The layers will need to be started sooner than the "canopy" (which, incidentally, I believe is a British term as I have never heard it used in American hairdressing lexicon); however, they should not be started immediately to avoid "stringy" ends.
