Many of the ones already mentioned, but especially the Outlander series by Gabaldon, a time travel historical series, Gone With the Wind, and Stephen King's The Stand, a post-apocalyptic odyssey (after an accidental germ warfare strain of flu leaks out from a government facility) with a classic battle between good and evil - I'm re-reading it now for about the fourth time. I like most King and Koontz, but this is in a class by itself - a classic in any genre.
