I have straight roots and I wet the hair and then brush. I also put a bit of gel. So I get no frizz.

Well, on me it tends to be because it's too much working against the grain. My second and third day roots are still curly, so making them straight and/or sleek is a PITA.

I think it would be a lot less damaging on straighter roots, especially if you are wetting them first.
