The most recent one that comes to mind is "What is the What" by Dave Eggers. It's an epic novel / fictional autobiography about one of the Sudanese "Lost Boys" who spends years fleeing one catastrophe after another (pillaging militiamen, man-eating lions and crocodiles, days in the desert without food/water, squalid camp conditions) before finally gaining refugee status and coming to the US, where he faces a whole host of other problems. Very engrossing read.
