You could try doing a white vinegar or apple cider vinegar rinse, too. I use about 2 ounce of vinegar and about 14 ounces of warm water.
1) Shampoo your hair with a gentle shampoo, rinse thorougly.
2)Pour the diluted vinegar over your head (keep your eyes and mouth closed, or it will be a very unpleasant experience). Gently massage your hair and scalp for a few miutes. Rinse throughly.
3) Apply a moisturizing conditioner. Leave on for a few minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Style as usual.
This is what has worked for me in the past to get rid of product build-up.
