I also have been experimenting with less product. I found that if I use Devacurl Set it Free, I can definitely use less styler. Same thing with Robert Craig Conditioner (a little left in after wash) and doing deep treatments more frequently. Instead of gel in the cold weather I am using Jessicurl Confident Coils and a little goes a long way.
