my sister swears by silk long underwear for days when she's skating on the Rideau Canal. it really helped a couple of years ago when Ottawa had a 2-month long bus strike and skating to and from work was the fastest way for her to get downtown. the last section of the canal going past the University of Ottawa toward Parliament Hill is one of the coldest places in the city in the winter - you get that northwest wind coming straight at you!
