I have the same problem, it's so frustrating! No matter what I do, though, I can't seem to get it to curl at all. Yeah, try diffusing upside-down, it seems to help a bit. The tip about clipping the top layer of hair up sounds good, I think I'm going to try it, I'll let you know how it goes.
