Hello!! I'm super new to the transitioning process and I have almost everything down except the protective styling bit.. As much as I research it I can never find a straight answer.. Now are protective styles suppose to protect just the ends? I keep reading that protective styles are suppose to protect the hair against the elements (heat, rain, wind), but unless I get either a weave or a wig, i'm not really protecting all of my hair which may lead to damage couldn't it?? Also is a bun/ ponytail a good protective style, or are braids necessary for the whole transitioning process?? As much as i'm okay with braids, I'm not ready to have them in yet (last braids were about 2 yrs ago..).. I really love the fact that i'm actually working with my natural hair and since its so new to me, i'm not ready to "put it away" just yet .. Last relaxer was July,16,2011 and counting down!!!
ps. And if there are any sulfate free shampoos you guys can recommend I would be eternally greatful

Braids and twists are good for transitioning since basically you're just leaving the hair alone and letting it do its thing. You just have to moisturize and clean them. I opted for kinky twists for now and I plan on redo-ing the front and back as needed. Then after idk 2 months ill take them all out wash, deep condition, let them have a break then put braids or twists back in.

Weaves and wigs are good for transitioning too, as long as you pay attention and take care of your real hair underneath it. Ponytails, to me, can do damage if they're pulled too tight (bad experience lol). There are a lot of options, you just have to pick the one best for you.

O and I'm still trying to find the right shampoo as well, I never paid attention to the sulfates and cones until now.so if you find one,let me know please.

They are supposed to protect the ends of the hair. I plan to get kinky twists after I let my scalp/hair breathe for about a week or so. This is site is amazing in that it allows you to communicate w/ ppl that are doing or have done the same things. I just recently put up a YouTube video explaining my decision to transition to natural hair. I plan to update frequently as I embark on this journey.
