Here is a good video. I don't need near the amount of hairspray she uses, but that could be because of my hair type. The curling starts about 4 minutes in.

It is better to start curling near the roots. The ends of your hair are the most damaged because they are the oldest part of your hair. If you clamp the ends, the ends end up receiving the lions share of the damage.

I don't know if there are differences when you start with curly hair or not (I'm wavy). HTH.
