I have heard that protein takes a little while to penetrate the hair shaft, therefore the most important protein items would be the one's you leave on the longest (stylers). That being said, I do find that my hair likes conditioners with proteins in them quite a bit. It helps with getting OC'ed. Also, supposedly you should reduce the amount of protein during the winter months and focus more on moisture. I have totally noticed this to be true, but still need weekly protein treatments and SOME protein daily. My hair in the summer/fall was a protein lovin' monster and now I have to be a little more careful or I get protein overload (never got this over the summer/fall, although that could be in part cuz my hair was more damaged then). HTH!
