It probably depends on the texture and length of your hair, mine is long and much curlier than yours is in your picture, and I get a flat top without really trying when I smooth in my product, raking it in with my fingers, pulling my hair straight and NOT scrunching or flipping my head upside down or plopping. Then I airdry. The top of my hair feels a little hard while it is drying, but dries soft. The top stays flat. I use Alba Botanica Soft Hold Style Cream, which is at some Whole Foods or online, for this look. It's definitely my most low-maintenance technique since I'm not bothering with all that flipping, scrunching, plopping. Also I apply when my hair is dampish-wet, not sopping wet.
