I like good quality metal duckbill clips, both the long ones and the short two-prong ones without the little crossbar - the ones you buy in boxes at Sally's. Hate the plastic Deva clips - they warp and just don't hold as well even initially.

I also like small butterfly or octopus clips OK, but they tangle worse - I tend to do better with duckbills on their sides.

Whatever I use, I diffuse upside down for a few minutes first to get my curls going then flip upright and insert the clips. Then I may or may not diffuse a bit more rightside up. Usually I just air dry. I can remove the clips after they've been in 30 minutes or so and let it continue air drying without them - by that time my product(s) has set enough that the roots stay lifted. I just have to be sure to let it get absolutely dry before SOTC.
